Hi Linda,

Thank you for your kind words about Olive Tree Genealogy.
It's a huge site and requires patience but the hunt is
worth it IMO :-)

For the time period of your Bornhauser family arrival,
you're in luck because most ports of arrival have been
indexed, and are on microfilm. New York is the exception,
the only index for this year is Ancestry.com's index and
manifest images online

For other ports, you can order the film in to a nearby FHC
or have NARA do lookups. you can get a list of film
numbers (NARA & FHC) at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml

Scroll down to the state you want and click on the link,
then find the film # you need

The staff of the National Archives will undertake a search
of the original records for a fee

To obtain a search request form, write to: General
Reference Branch (NNRG), National Archives and Records
Administration, 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW,
Washington, DC 20408 and request NATF Form 81, Order for
Copies of Ship Passenger Arrival Records.

To find your nearest FHC you can go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

You may find your ancestors arrival online but the ships
that have been transcribed and put online on websites like
Olive Tree are only a tiny fraction of the totals, so don't
be surprised if your ancestors aren't found.

If you want to check NY arrivals, your best bet is
Ancestry's online index - and I'd use their Free Trial if I
were you. If you go to
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ancestry14dayfree.html you'll
find a complete list of all their Free Trials (as well as
Genealogy.com's FTs). These are truly free, you have to
give a credit card number but that's so they can prevent
folks taking more than one Free Trial - and as long as you
cancel before your time period is up, you won't be charged.

Have you checked Naturalization Records? They may help you
narrow the search for the those immigration records. The
1900, 1910 ,1920 and 1930 census identify citizenship
status, with notations showing the individual was an Alien,
or had started the Naturalization process or had his final
papers.

You can look for naturalization records at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/

Be sure to read the intro to Naturalization records, then
click on the state you want, then choose ONLINE records
(for a Directory of Links to all online records for that
state) then OFFLINE records to get the Resource Guide that
explains what is available and where it is.

Let the pages load before you start clicking, and be sure
to read all the way to the bottom

You can read more about the value of census records in
your search for an immigrant ancestor at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/census.shtml

Good luck!

Lorine
