Subject: [ROOTS-L] The Charles Barron Ponderosa

The Charles Barron Ponderosa

Many years ago somewhere near the year 1959 in the City of Enid,
Oklahoma I was employed by Evan Cut Rite Drug. At that time Evan's
Drug was located on the East side of the town square and one store
north of Coldirons Clothing Store. If I remember correctly CHARLES
BARON was the store Manager and RALPH MEIER.S was Assistant Manager.

CHARLIE BARRON and his wife MARY MARGARET BARRON were two of the
kindest, friendliest people I have ever known. I learned a lot of good
people skills working with him. Charlie was a very good customer
relation's man. In all the years I knew him I never ever saw him get
mad at any one. I watched him deal with many disgruntled customers
that would always leave our store happy. I thought CHARLIE BARRON'S
wife MARY MARGARET had the prettiest name and when my sixth child a
girl was born I named her after MARY MARGARET BARRON.

Right before the new YMCA opened in Enid, CHARLES and MARY MARGERET
BARRON bought some farmland around Ringwood, Oklahoma that they called
"THE CHARLIE BARRON PONDEROSA." We had an EVANS DRUG Store Party at
the PONDEROSA not long after Charlie bought the place. Charlie had
three horses but he did not have any saddles for them at that
time. This Old Kid by the name of LARRY JOHNDROW worked for Evans Drug
then and he was quite a horseman a very handsome Arcadian young
man. He said to me "Paul I will race you horse back to that fence over
there!" I said "Larry I can not race you bare back on that horse. I
have not even been horse back riding since I was about 17 years old."
We got on those horses bare back and started racing across the pasture
and I slid right off of my horse and landed hard on my tailbone. I
felt like my tailbone was broken. I figured that my tailbone could not
be fixed and I would just have to tough it out. After the big horse
race we played baseball. I felt like I had a heavy sheet of iron
across my back, but I played ball and latter pitched horseshoes for a
while. We had a great time picnicking on the Barron Plantation.

For a month after the picnic on the Ponderosa I felt like I was
carrying this heavy sheet of metal across my backside. If I sat down
in a chair the only way I could get out of that chair was to push my
self up by pushing down with my arms. About that time the new YMCA
opened and WILFORD EVANS bought all of the employee's a family
membership. I took my family to the YMCA on FAMILY NIGHT. We went
swimming. My tailbone felt good as long as we were in the water. I had
a terrible time dragging my rear out of that pool. The kids and I
decided to go see what was in the exercise room. I spotted a vibrator
with a wide belt that went around your waist and hips. I stood on that
vibrator and put the wide belt around my hips I turned the switch on
position and the first swish across my tailbone put my tailbone back
in place and I never hurt there again.

Some of the employees working there was VIVA MANUEL,EVA SMITH, RALPH
MOORE, LOWELL CUSHING, BILL DUDLY, FRANCES WILLIAMS, NED FOSTER,
WEBSTER FULLER,DOROTHY MOORE, CAROLYN COWEN, LEO CORN, PATSY POWELL,
GARY GIBSON, and many others that I can not think of their names but
can see there faces in my mind.

I have never been on a horse since.
