Subject: [ROOTS-L] Definition of Freeman

Janet,

The term for a freed slave was "Freedman". The term "Freeman" was used in
Colonial days for a male citizen (mostly the English) over the age of 21
who owned
property, was in good standing with the Church, and had the right to
vote. The two terms are NOT interchangeable. A Google search will yield
several results for you to study.

Ann Barrell Alfaro

Could someone explain to me why a whiteman would be called a freeman in
colonial times.? Thank you Janet Sawyer
