Subject: [ROOTS-L] migration to MO

I think the information on Erie Canal and early transportation has been very
interesting and educational for many of us on this list. Certainly, I have
learned much. I saved all book titles and websites for further study. It was a
new concept to me that there were MANY canals that the immigrants could and did
use for transportation to the inland. And I especially enjoyed the post
stating that the writer had actually "traveled" on the canal! That would be a very
interesting trip! Thank you ALL for sharing...and thanks to the first poster
who asked how his/her relatives arrived in MO.

There is currently a small discussion about "leaving the canal and walking"
or "leaving the lakes and walking" to inner America. Actually, I wrote the
original post, and I just checked: I wrote "leaving the WATER and walking". I knew
that my Wisconsin ggrandfather and other families left the lake to walk to
homesteads...like eliz, I think of the Great Lakes as part of the "whole
package" of water transportation, but had no clue where the Erie Canal started/ended.
I also understand, of course, that Wisconsin is NOT Missouri (duh); but I
thought by contributing the route that the Wisconsin settlers traveled, it might
give the MO poster an idea to explore. If you would like to respond to this
note, probably a personal email would be appreciated by most of the listers. It
has been a great string, and I would hate to see it end in disagreement.
