Subject: [ROOTS-L] Census mystery

Archibald C;. Spears, my G.G;.Grandfather, sold his farm and home in Desotoville, Choctaw County,
Alabama. He, his wife Elizabeth, A. C. Spears Jr., and their two youngest sons, John Thomas and
Joseph, left Choctaw County in November 1865 and settled near the town of Grandview, Johnson County, Texas. The Johnson County, Texas census of 1870, enumerated on 7 September 1870, lists this Spears Family: Spears, A. C. age 63, male, white, Farmer.
Elizabeth age 64, female, white, keeping house
                                     Joseph age 21
These three listings is what we expected to find in this census. The last listing was a surprise.

Spears , Ms age 12, female, black

The census listing that I have is really not too clear and very hard to read. We are requesting help
in solving this mystery. Maybe someone has access to a census that is more legible and can verify
that this young girl is listed as shown above. I also hope that fellow rooters who have more experience
in such matters, could explain how, and why, and help us solve this mystery. Herschell R. Spears hebe@peoplescom.net
