Subject: [ROOTS-L] Early New England Town Officers

I have been reading the town records of Stetson, Maine for the early
1800s. In town records I've read previously the voters elected three
selectmen at the town meeting and one tax collector. Stetson voters
elected three Assessors and a tax collector, along with numerous other
town officials. Is this term Assessor another name for a Selectman and
not an assessor as we use the term now? Or did the Selectmen also
assess the valuation and tax rate for the town? I tried a Google search
and got nowhere fast. I think I don't use the right search terms. I
hope someone can help.
