Subject: [ROOTS-L] Birth Certificates

My great great grandmother was a mid wife. I have her "manual" from the 1800's. It basically reads as a "fictional horror", only it is the instructions that were to be followed. She lived in southwest Virginia. Several of my relatives and neighbors had to go to their Congressman to get Social Security due to the fact that most all in that area at the turn of the Century were delivered by a midwife. By the time they realized they needed a birth certificate everybody was dead that could attest to their birth. The Congressman basically had them get two people to swear as to how long they had known them and about how old they were when they met. I remember as a little girl going with my grandparents to testify for a neighbor. It was all they could do in that area.
