BIOGRAPHY: ST. PETERSBURG - The history behind one Floridian's headstone,
by CAROL LOVE: Along the winding way near the entrance to Weedon Island
nature preserve is a small area set off by a white picket fence. There, by
the side of the road, sits a lone marble tombstone. The small headstone
reads: PVT LORENZO DOW ROSS/CO B/7 FLA INF/CSA 1888. Who was he?
Keith Thompson knows. Thompson, who is in charge of the preserve, has
compiled a brief history book about the island.
According to Thompson's research, Lorenzo Dow "Papy" Ross was born in
1836 across the bay in Fort Brooke, which is now the city of Tampa, and was
one of only 452 people living in the Tampa Bay area at the time.
Lorenzo grew up to be both a soldier and a farmer. In 1856 he joined
the U.S. Army and fought in the aftermath of the second Seminole war.
Although the war was officially over, Seminole "insurrection" still
existed down in the Everglades. Lorenzo was part of the Army infantry that
fought the last skirmishes with the Everglades Seminoles.
In 1862, Lorenzo took up arms again, this time for the Confederacy.
He was part of Company B of the 7th Florida Infantry. He was eventually
promoted to sergeant. He was captured and taken prisoner by the Union
forces in November 1863. The Union released him after the war in June 1865.
Lorenzo's capture may have saved his life. He was one of only a few of the
500 men who left Florida in the 7th Infantry to come home alive.
After his release, Lorenzo returned to the Pinellas peninsula and
bought more than 300 acres on what is now called Weedon Island. The going
price is believed to have been $1 an acre. The portion he owned and
maintained is in the southeast corner of the preserve and is still called
Ross Island. Papy's Point and Papy's Bayou, other portions of the preserve,
are also named after him.
Lorenzo went on to become a corn and potato farmer. In 1866 he
married Inez Hart, a woman whose family already had a place in Florida's
history books. Her grandfather, Isiah Hart, founded Jacksonville. And her
great-uncle Ossian B. Hart was governor of Florida from 1873 until he died
in 1874.
Together Inez and Lorenzo had six children. Little is known about
their brood except that their eldest, Frank Percy Ross was both born on the
island in 1868 and died on the island in 1886 as a result of a hunting
accident.
Lorenzo died not long after his eldest son. In 1889 he succumbed to
food poisoning and was laid to rest on the northwest side of Weedon Island.
The family owned a portion of land there as well as Ross Island and it was
thought to be more prudent to lay their kin to rest on the higher land
rather in the midst of the bayou. Inez left the island after her husband's
death and lived in Jensen Beach until she died in 1942.
Lorenzo"s grave was neglected and forgotten for many years until
Halloween night in 1968, when vandals stole headstones of both Lorenzo and
his son, Percy.
Ten years later Lorenzo's headstone reappeared at the Tampa Historic
Society. It had been turned in by a resident who found the tombstone in his
garage. Because Lorenzo had been a veteran, the Department of Veterans
Affairs helped replace the marble marker. The local chapter of the United
Daughter's of the Confederacy has since honored Lorenzo by placing flowers
on his grave every Memorial Day. Pg 5, St. Petersburg Times, 19 Sep 1998.
