Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Dunkards

The Maryland Civil War site mentioned in the Southern Living article is
the Antietam Battlefield at Sharpsburg, MD. The Battle of Antietam is
considered the bloodiest single day battle of the war, with more than
23,000 casualties. Some of the heaviest fighting occured in the area
of the Dunkard(Dunker) Church. The original Church was still standing
until the early 1900's when it was destroyed during a severe storm.
The Church was rebuilt and still stands on one of the best preserved
battlefieds of the Civil War. There are several websites devoted to
this battle, and pictures of the Church can be found there.

While I know little about the Dunkards, I believe they are also known
as the German Baptist Brethren, and some of their beliefs are similar
to those of the Quakers and the Amish. The founders of the Church in
Maryland were descendants of early immigrants from Germany

Saw an article in a Southern Living about a Civil War site in Maryland and
it mentioned that this was also where the Dunkards ( a religious group) had
lived about the time of the Revolutionary War. If anyone has any
information about this, please let me know.
