Date: Wed, 5 May 1993 11:27:19 -0500 Reply-To: MELODIE SANDERS Subject: Internet access to Library of Congress Catalog On the ROOTS-L/soc.roots discussion groups, one of the FAQs has been, Where can I search the Library of Congress online catalog via Internet? This month, Library of Congress (LC) has begun a pilot project in allowing Internet access to their online catalog. *If* you can TELNET you can enter it using the address, "locis.loc.gov". LC's catalog allows you to search by name, title, subject, series, classification number, LC control number, and all of the other standard numbers. It has a browse function and supports boolean searching. The brief, full record, and MARC formats can be displayed. For further information, type HELP COMMANDS while in the LC catalog, and hopefully, later this summer manuals which can be either purchased or FTP'd will be available. Below is the announcement originally posted on HELP-NET (and reposted on NETTRAIN)... I will follow this message with a separate message containing several sample searches. Its services extend not only to Members and committees of Congress, but to the executive and judicial branches of government, to libraries throughout the Nation and the world, and to the scholars, researchers, artists, and scientists who use its resources. THE COLLECTIONS Collections of the Library include nearly one hundred million items covering virtually every subject in formats that vary from papyrus to compact disc. These materials include books, periodicals, microforms, maps, music, newspapers, photographs, manuscripts, motion pictures, television broadcasts, and sound recordings. THE BUILDINGS The Library of Congress complex on Capitol Hill includes three buildings: the Thomas Jefferson Building, the John Adams Building, and the James Madison Memorial Building. Throughout the Library buildings manuscripts, rare books, prints, and maps from the collections are exhibited. On permanent display are such priceless treasures as a volume of the Library's copy of the Gutenberg Bible (one of three surviving examples printed on vellum and perfect in all respects) and the Giant Bible of Mainz, an illuminated manuscript executed by hand at about the time the Gutenberg Bible was printed. SECURITY Unfortunately, many of the items held by the Library are suffering the deterioration of time and age. Other materials have been destroyed and lost forever due to thievery and vandalism. To prevent further losses to malicious damage, security at the Library has been tightened significantly. The stacks are CLOSED to all but employees on official business. Thorough inspections are conducted at entrance and egress of the buildings. Researchers wishing to request material from the Library's stacks must present PICTURE IDENTIFICATION that shows their current address, before submitting call slips. DOCUMENTS THAT FOLLOW The Internet documents that follow describe in considerable detail many of the different reading rooms and offices that make up the Library today. Individuals seeking information from the Library should read carefully the policy statements below. Those planning to visit the Library to conduct research should also read INFORMATION FOR RESEARCHERS, which is one of the documents on the Internet. REFERENCE POLICY The primary mission of the Library of Congress is to serve Members of the Congress and, thereafter, the needs of the government, other libraries, and members of the public, universities, and learned societies. The Library welcomes requests for general reference and information assistance, but encourages correspondents to use local library resources FIRST. Public, state, academic, and special libraries are often able to be highly responsive to local information needs. The staffs of these libraries know they can turn to the Library of Congress for help on questions requiring access to our collections. Correspondents who have made full use of local and regional resources may seek assistance from the Library of Congress, confident that our staff will respond to their reference and information needs to the extent possible. Please note, however, that the scope of our services DOES NOT INCLUDE: 1) Compilation of bibliographies 2) Answering requests for information connected with school assignments, debates and contests 3) Conducting research in heraldry or family history. The Library's National Reference Service (NRS) provides information by telephone (202-707-5522) about the Library's holdings of particular works. Staff from the NRS will also offer research strategy and orientation for researchers planning to come to the Library. Callers with queries of a general reference nature will be referred to local libraries or other information sources. The Library of Congress enthusiastically supports the work of public libraries everywhere and encourages would-be researchers to turn first to the library resources available at their local level.
