>> From hoth.stsci.edu!fred Fri Dec 3 21:17:00 1993 >> From: fred@hoth.stsci.edu (Fred Romelfanger) >> Subject: update to genealog.ftpstsci Here is an updated version. -- fred@stsci.edu ====================================================================== PLEASE: Read all this message before requesting any files. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ A draft of the GEDCOM 5.3 standard is available via anonymous ftp and via electornic mail through a listserver archive similar to the listserver once supported on vm1.nodak.edu. I got the copy of the GEDCOM draft from Cliff Manis who got it at a genealogical conference where it was free distributed. If any of you come across a newer electronic version of the document that I can free distribute, please send it along. Access via anonymous FTP If you have direct access to the Internet, you can retrieve the specs via anonymous ftp from hoth.stsci.edu (130.167.1.163) in the directory gedcom53. There are two different formats of the standard and some C code for accessing files written in the standard and some example files. There is a list of the files and what are in them: gedstand.t82 - ASCII version of the draft GEDCOM 5.3 standard gedstand.r82 - WordPerfect version of draft GEDCOM 5.3 standard gedcom.zip - Archive containing these two files csource.zip - Example C source code csourdoc.zip - Documentation for the above (WordPerfect only) demo.zip - DOS programs to play with GEDCOM files under MSDOS. pkunzip.exe - DOS program that unpacks zip files readme - File containing the original readme file supplied with the collection. gedcom53.tar.Z - compressed tar file containing the files that were in the .zip files listed above. All files except for gedstand.t82 and readme MUST be retrieved in binary mode. Access via electronic mail over the Internet If you don't have direct access to the Internet, you can get any of the above files via email through a listserver similar to listserv@mail.eworld.com. Send mail to lines@hoth.stsci.edu and in the body of the message put one or more of the following lines: PLEASE: READ the email address again in the line above !!! get gedcom53 gedstand.t82 get gedcom53 gedstand.r82 get gedcom53 gedcom.zip get gedcom53 csource.zip get gedcom53 csourdoc.zip get gedcom53 demo.zip get gedcom53 pkunzip.exe get gedcom53 readme get gedcom53 gedcom53.tar All of the files except readme and gedstand.t82 come as multi-part uuencoded files. You will need to pieces the files back together in the right order and remove any mail headers and trailers. Once you have it back together, you run uudecode with the file as input and you should get back the original file. The main file that will be different after you uudecode it is that gedcom53.tar is just a tar file and is not compressed. This also causes the file to be large and will arrive in 31 seperate parts. Access via electronic mail over NSI-DECnet If you have access to NSI-DECnet only, you should be able to send the same message to as described above to 7065::lines. I am not totally commited to supporting DECnet yet, so I have not arranged with NSI to have HOTH published as the corresponding DECnet node name. Also the node name and address may change later depending on how licensing works out. The other node name would be STSCI, but the STSCI that is currently on NSI-DECnet does not properly handle DECnet mail. Direct file access via DECnet is not supported due to a security problem with the current implementation. I have requested a software enhancement, so I may be able to support direct file access at a later time.
