FTP - SAMPLE SESSION > From DESIRE.WRIGHT.EDU!CTODD Mon Jul 15 20:44:31 1991 > From: "Craig M. Todd" This is a sample of an ftp session. If you have read any literature on ftp and find yourself still a bit confused perhaps this will help. It is a interactive ftp with wuarchive.wustl.edu which is Washington University at St. Louis. They have set themselves up as an archiver of ftp sites. They have the complete directories from SIMTEL20 plus the added advantage of easier access. The session begins by typing in "ftp". This starts our ftp software and produces the asterisk prompt, on your system the prompt may be different I have variously seen "ftp>" and ">" as prompts. The first command makes the connection between you and the remote site: open wuarchive.wustl.edu Once the connection is opened you should receive the username prompt, this will most often be "anonymous". Quite a few sites are run on case sensitive machines so it is usually best to stay with lowercase when logging in. Next comes the password. This can be anything but it is preferred to be your network address, in this case I put "ctodd@desire.wright.edu", without the quote marks. $ ftp desire Wollongong FTP User Process (Version 5.1) *open wuarchive.wustl.edu Connection Opened Using 8-bit bytes. 220 wuarchive.wustl.edu FTP server (Version 6.10 Wed Jul 10 09:00:25 CDT 1991) r eady. Now I use the "dir" command to get a list of available files and subdirectories. This site signifies subdirectories with a "d" in the first column, although this is quite common it will not always be the case. On this system the copies of files from other sites reside in the "mirrors " subdirectories so we change directory to "mirrors". *dir 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls. total 13093 -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 0 Nov 28 1990 .notar -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 2315 Feb 21 10:35 README -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 910 Mar 24 14:15 README.07-Sep-90 -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 4843 May 30 16:05 arrangement d--x--x--x 2 root wheel 512 Nov 27 1990 bin -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 462848 Jul 15 05:05 core drwxr-xr-x 12 root archive 1915 May 17 16:51 decus d--x--x--x 5 root wheel 512 Jul 15 17:52 etc -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 6595090 Jul 15 06:33 files.lst -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 1025068 Jul 15 06:34 files.lst.Z drwxrwxr-x 11 root archive 3072 Jul 9 05:09 gnu drwxrwxr-x 4 root archive 512 Feb 8 12:02 graphics drwxrwxr-x 12 root archive 512 May 10 13:35 info drwx------ 2 root archive 4096 Mar 12 10:12 lost+found -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 4384122 Jul 15 06:25 ls-lR -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 867027 Jul 15 06:35 ls-lR.Z drwxr-xr-x 13 root archive 512 Jun 18 20:08 mirrors drwxr-xr-x 5 root archive 512 May 30 14:19 mirrors2 drwxrwxr-x 2 root wheel 512 Jun 28 12:27 network_info drwxrwxr-x 27 root archive 1024 Jul 8 16:06 packages drwxr-x--x 3 root archive 512 Jun 5 09:03 private drwxrwxrwx 7 root archive 1024 Jul 15 16:50 pub drwxrwxr-x 17 root archive 512 Mar 14 23:04 systems drwxr-xr-x 3 root archive 512 Feb 28 14:21 techreports drwxrwxr-x 4 root archive 512 Nov 28 1990 unix drwxrwxr-x 26 root archive 1024 Jul 12 19:27 usenet 226 Transfer complete. *cd mirrors 250-Welcome to the 'mirrors' directory. The above command is just like in DOS - cd => change directory. Now, do another directory to get a further path of subdirectories. In this case you want to go to "msdos". I included the directory listing of the msdos subdirectory just to give you an idea of how many different files are available from this site (and SIMTEL20 as well!). You now should change directory to genealogy and do a dir command. Notice that the very first file is "00-index.txt", that's zero zero, SIMTEL20 has a file of this name in every directory. This contains information about each file. Information such as file type and a one line description of its function. It is well worth your while to log in and just retrieve these index files from the directories which interest you, return to your system where you can look at the list, plan which files you want to retrieve and then log back on and retrieve them. AT the end of this demo section you see an example of retrieving a txt, or ASCII, file using the "get" command. *cd genealogy 250 CWD command successful. *dir 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls. total 3514 -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 2034 Jul 14 19:00 00-index.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 335149 Jan 26 18:00 bk45cd1.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 326193 Jan 26 18:00 bk45cd2.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 230923 Jan 26 18:00 bk45cd3.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 71168 Feb 7 18:00 bkindx.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 177872 May 7 19:00 census20.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 44094 Apr 29 19:00 chart.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 284874 May 7 19:00 crd301.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 293543 May 7 19:00 crdlt11.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 25344 May 5 19:00 descen21.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 167398 Jun 27 1989 fhs1.arc -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 258733 Jun 27 1989 fhs2.arc -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 177063 May 12 19:00 ft119d.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 137894 May 12 19:00 ftp119a.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 27392 May 7 19:00 gbbs9104.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 73472 Nov 7 1990 ged2t9.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 61486 Nov 18 1990 genkit15.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 233349 May 7 19:00 myfmly20.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 81497 May 7 19:00 named119.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 109068 May 7 19:00 namev201.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 132096 May 4 19:00 pafp21.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 105281 May 7 19:00 sdiprt94.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root archive 127275 Nov 28 1990 slekt02.zip 226 Transfer complete. *get 00-index.txt 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for 00-index.txt (2034 bytes). 226 Transfer complete. In this next section we use the "mget", or multiple get, command to retrieve several files in sequence. The files are compressed so we cannot retrieve them in ASCII format or they will arrive corrupted and useless. To retrieve a compressed file via ftp the software must be put into image file transfer mode. This is done with the "binary" command. The "mget bk45cd*.zip" command string signals ftp to retrieve all files which begin with "bk45cd" and end in ".zip". This will allow the retrieval of almost all the Brother's Keeper files. Although this next command is not necessary unless you are planning on getting another text formatted file I put it in simply to show how to get out of binary mode and back to a text mode. *ascii 200 Type set to A. The "cd .." moves back up the directory structure one level, in this case to the msdos subdirectory. There they have what is called a flat file system so to move from one "subdirectory" to another you must supply the complete directory path each time. For instance all their msdos files are on a disk drive called "PD1:" and the msdos section is called "MSDOS". The groupings all have the same names as the above site so the genealogy directory would be accessed by the following command: * cd PD1: and then to change to the ZIP directory you would type: * cd PD1: The rest works the same as shown in the above example. One extra note. In most ftp packages typing a question mark or the word help will get you a listing of all available commands. If you get through this and are still having trouble send me a detailed explanation of your problem and I will attempt to help you out. Good Luck!
