Unfortunately, I will not be able to continue this service, so the archive has been moved to a new site. Scott Dickson has graciously provided a genealogy directory for anonymous ftp access at ftp.cac.psu.edu (128.118.2.23). The genealogy files will be located in the directory tree below /pub/genealogy. For the time being, I will continue to administer the genealogy archives. My address, for upload requests or donate a file to the archive is saw@ftp.cac.psu.edu. The new site has no public uploads directory. Please contact me if you have a file to upload. The location of the genealogy archives to PSU is a temporary move. I had hoped to move the archive to one of the big ftp sites that has anonymous ftp access as an official purpose, but I have not been able to arrange access to such a site yet. I am still working on this, but if anyone can help arrange a site that can host the genealogy collection indefinetely and provide access to an off-site maintainer. (A site that can also provide WWW and WAIS access would be a plus.) In other news, Scott Dickson is attempting to mirror the genealogy text archives on vm1.nodak.edu, in order to provide one-stop shopping for genealogy help and programs. The nodak roots-l files can been found in the directory /pub/genealogy/roots-l also on ftp.cac.psu.edu. It is not yet clear how often this directory will get updated from vm1.nodak.edu. Stephen A. Wood saw@ftp.cac.psu.edu Subject: New files on anonymous ftp site for genealogy The anonymous FTP site ftp.cac.psu.edu ([128.118.2.23]) has an area devoted to genealogy. This area is for genealogy database programs and other genealogy software as well as various text files that may aid in genealogy reserearch. At present, most of the programs available are MS-DOS programs, but anyone is invited to submit programs for other platforms (unix, vms, macintosh, ...) to be archived here. This collection of files also includes a copy of all the files located in the ROOTS-L directory of vm1.nodak.edu. This archive is being maintained in "rude" mode. The only mail that I will acknowledge will be requests for uploading new files. I will write back and tell you whether or not I can find the requested file, and then if I can find the file, I will upload it anywhere from 0 to 4 weeks after your request. But if you write to ask anything else (i.e. how do I use ftp to get files, how come your ftp gets stuck, what do I do with these files once I've got them etc., is file xxx corupt, where is the documentation for program xxx, ...), I will be rude and simply ignore your mail. I am sorry about this, but I don't have the time to provide better support, and I figure having this genealogy archive up is better than not. A complete list of files on ftp.cac.psu.edu is in the file /genealogy/INDEX. Files that end in ".zip", "lzh", ".exe", "arj", "arc" and "com" are binary and should be transferred in binary mode. Files that end in anything else are probably text files and should be transferred in ASCII mode. If you are transferring files to a UNIX system, binary mode is generally the best mode to use for all transfers. Binaries will usually be in ZIP format with a file extension of ".zip". A self extracting copy of PKware's shareware programs is in the DOS file "pkz204g.exe". Zip files can also be read with the DOS program "unz50p1.exe". Some files are also compressed with lharc having the ending ".lzh". The software to unpack those files can be found in the self extracting DOS archive "lha213.exe". Files that end with ".arj" may be uncompressed with "unarj.exe" which is in the zip file "unarj230.zip". ".arc" files may be decompressed with a program in "pk361.exe". There are also several files that end with ".exe". These are generally either self extracting DOS archives or DOS programs. Files ending in .Z have been compressed with unix "compress". Files ending in .gz have been compressed with gzip. The current listing of files on ftp.cac.psu.edu in the /pub/genealogy anonymous ftp directory is in the file INDEX also in the /pub/genealogy directory. If there is a program that you think should be posted, write me a note requesting it. The file AVAILABLE contains a list of files that are available to me from a local genealogy BBS. If you would like a file that is in the AVAILABLE list, just send me a note. Please make sure that the file is not already available on hallc1 before requesting it. This ftp site welcomes uploads, however there is no uploads directory. If you wish to upload a file, please send mail to saw@ftp.cac.psu.edu to arrange a methode of uploading. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stephen Wood Presently Searching: LAMB SHIFLETT HUMES LIMB TODD CONY SELF and PA Quakers INTERNET: saw@ftp.cac.psu.edu
