Last update June 22, 2005. This is version 8.3 of the (U.S.) Civil War units file. The next version will be posted in September. I'll post a call for listings first. If you see this file after October 31, 2005, it is obsolete; please write to botteron@alum.mit.edu and tell me where you found it. The CWUNITS file lists people who have (at least some) information on a unit and are willing to help others research it. Some are experts, most are not. This is _not_ a file of re-enactment units. Directions: If you're looking for info on a unit, see if someone is listed; if so, contact them. For more specific directions, read the FAQ (see below). If you don't know which unit or no one is listed, do _not_ ask me (unless you want to volunteer as a contact). I am _not_ a CW expert, only a fellow seeker. CWUNITS is now five files (plus one for this intro only and one for the FAQ) as follows: Part Filename Contents 0 CWUNITS introduction only 1 CWUNITS1 USA national & states A-I 2 CWUNITS2 USA states K-N 3 CWUNITS3 USA states O-W 4 CWUNITS4 CSA national & states A-M 5 CWUNITS5 CSA states N-V Q CWUNITSQ FAQ (frequently asked questions and answers) Parts 1-5 include this intro as well as the listings. Within a state the units are organized by number (1st Infantry, etc.). On the WWW, the Civil War Units File is on the American Civil War Homepage at http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html under the heading of Rosters & Regimental Histories. I don't run this site; I just send them the file to upload. Normally you can get the latest version of CWUNITS by email at any time: Send email to ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com (Upper and lower case count in the email address and everywhere else.) Subject: archive Text is: get genealog.cwunits get genealog.cwunits1 get genealog.cwunits2 etc. The period (.) has to be after genealog and before the file name. If you can't get mail through to a listed address, check your spelling. If it's OK, try again in a few days in case there was a temporary problem. If that doesn't work, ask me. Send me the address and what unit it's listed for, and tell me what error message you received. If you send me any mail about the Civil War Units File, please include the "word" CWUNITS in the subject line. Otherwise I might miss your note and accidentally delete it; I get a *lot* of email. Please do _not_ send me attachments. If you're listed as a contact, would like to be, or wonder what it involves, please read the FAQ. http://www.rootsweb.com/ has many useful mailing lists including several on the Civil War. For information on reenactment units see the Civil War Reenactors Home Page: http://www.cwreenactors.com/ (I have no connection with this page.)
