A Time for Pruning Unlike at WorldConnect, uploading your file on Ancestry Online Family Tree (OFT) or Ancestry World Tree (AWT) does not replace or update an existing file. Uploading a file there creates an additional file. Not realizing this and thinking they are replacing outdated files, many eager-to-share genealogists have posted multiple copies of their trees. A major reason why there are so many duplicates of the same trees is due to assuming that your "new" (updated) file overrides the "old" (original) file at Ancestry. It does not. You might be surprised to discover that your "trees" have created a forest of duplications. Unsure whether you might have duplicate files on WorldConnect, Ancestry World Tree (AWT) and/or Online Family Tree (OFT)? Do a search for a unique name that can be found in your database from the main World- Connect page. Search results should display any duplicate files or duplicate names within a single file. http://wc.rootsweb.com/ Although family tree files submitted through both Ancestry and RootsWeb sides are searched and browsed (viewed) as one huge database, the submission, updating and removal processes work differently from the two sides. To add to the confusion there are three names involved: WorldConnect (at RootsWeb), and at Ancestry.com there's Online Family Tree (OFT) and Ancestry World Tree (AWT). If you do not remember whether you submitted the original file through Ancestry or RootsWeb, the user code will tell you. A user code that starts with a colon ":" indicates that the file was submitted through Ancestry's Online Family Tree (OFT). User codes that start with a colon PLUS the letter a ":a" were submitted via Ancestry World Tree (AWT). WorldConnect user codes are submitter-selected and comprised of letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores. To have an Ancestry World Tree (AWT) file removed -- where your user code starts with ":a" (that's a colon and the letter "a") or where the user code starts with a colon plus FIVE or FEWER numbers, contact Ancestry Customer Support: http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php? To remove an Online Family Tree (OFT) where the user code starts with a COLON and SIX or SEVEN numbers, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/ and click on the FAMILY TREES tab. If you do not see a chart headed SELECT AN ONLINE FAMILY TREE, you will need to click the LOGIN TO VIEW EXISTING FAMILY TREES link. All trees in your account will be displayed here -- including any private MyFamily Trees over which you hold owner or editor rights. Be careful not to delete the latter in error. Icons to the far right of each listed tree here indicate the current status of that tree. If you do not see graphical icons (such as world globe or trashcan), click the ADVANCED OPTIONS link just above the chart outline. You must click on the WORLD GLOBE WITH RED X icon to remove the file from Ancestry World Tree/WorldConnect. If you also wish to delete the tree entirely from Online Family Tree click the TRASH CAN icon AFTER you have also clicked on the WORLD GLOBE WITH RED X icon. Caution: You can not recover a file after doing this. If you cannot find the family tree you wish to remove that was originally submitted through the Ancestry side following the above procedure, you may have additional usernames (accounts). To obtain all account information for your current e-mail addresses, log out, click on LOGIN, and then click on the FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD link. An e-mail will be sent to you with all account information. You must login under each account to check for additional trees at Ancestry. Questions about possible accounts under obsolete e-mail addresses? You need to contact Ancestry Customer Support for assistance. http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php? You cannot remove/override a family tree submitted through Ancestry by uploading a revised file using RootsWeb's WorldConnect's Set-up page to do so. If it has been some time since you uploaded your GEDCOM to RootsWeb's WorldConnect and you have added new and corrected information to your genealogy file and you wish to update your WorldConnect file to reflect this new information, here's what to do. Create a new GEDCOM which includes your updated information. You want to be sure that the new file you are about to upload to WorldConnect replaces the old file and doesn't merely create a new file leaving the outdated information in place beside the new file. Start on the main WorldConnect page: http://wc.rootsweb.com/ and click on the link that says: "Also, go here to update or correct your existing Family Tree." Type in your original user code and password -- the ones you used when you first created your WorldConnect family tree. If you have forgotten either your user code or password you can retrieve them both from Password Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Mark the bottom box under OTHER to retrieve this information. Next select either the standard or advanced set-up page to update your existing WorldConnect GEDCOM. When updating your GEDCOM, remember you must indicate on the set-up page the path or location of the new GEDCOM on your computer in the appropriate box on the set-up page so that WorldConnect can find the new file you wish to upload. You can do that through the use of the BROWSE button or by typing in the path to the new file in this box. When you have selected all of the items applicable to your new file on the set-up page, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on UPLOAD/UPDATE option and wait for your new file to be uploaded and to replace the existing file -- automatically. But, remember that, in order for the file to REPLACE the existing file, at WorldConnect, you must have used your original user code and password that you selected when creating the file you now wish to replace. When you are looking at the set-up page you should be seeing the information relating to your (original) file and not a new set-up page that says you are about to create a new file --- you do not want to create a new file -- you want to replace the existing one. This is a good time to check the forest of family trees you might have planted on AWT, OFT and/or WorldConnect and do some appropriate pruning. * * * 1b. EDITOR'S DESK. Missing from Home in the British Census When searching for British ancestors in the censuses it is helpful to know that its 1841 census was taken on 7 June, but from 1851 through 1931, this was done between 31 March and 8 April. Enumerators were instructed to list only those persons who spent the night in each household when the census was taken. Those traveling, at boarding schools, or working away from home are listed where they spent the night. A missing person in a family group in any of the census returns might also be explained by the fact that the person was in the hospital, in prison, or in service. Soldiers and sailors serving abroad are not included in their home censuses. You can explore "200 Years of the Census" and its 38 area monitors covering England and Wales, which take into account that county boundaries have changed just like the census itself. See what kind of homes people had, the type of jobs, the move from the countryside to the towns, the decline in the size of households and much more, plus historical facts that have emerged from 200 years of census taking. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/bicentenary/bicent2.html For additional information about utilizing census records wherever your ancestors roamed, see "Census Related Sites Worldwide" http://www.cyndislist.com/census2.htm and "Census Records" in the RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees: http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/lesson9.htm * * * 1c. TIPS FROM READERS. Over There; Over Here By Fran Bolton Jfrbol@aol.com After receiving several e-mails with questions about my tip in last week's RWR, I want to add some information on how U.S. servicemen were enumerated when stationed overseas. According to "Americans Overseas in U.S. Census," by Karen Mills of the Census Bureau, at: http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/overseas/twps0062.html U.S. MILITARY PERSONNEL STATIONED ABROAD OR AT SEA 1870, 1880, 1900: --Enumerate at stateside home (also may have been included in overseas population in 1900) 1910 - 1990 --Do not enumerate at stateside home (included in overseas population) The 1920 census was the first to use special forms to enumerate the population abroad. CREWS OF U.S. MERCHANT MARINE VESSELS AT SEA 1870, 1880, 1910, 1920: --Enumerate at stateside home. 1930--Enumerate officers at stateside home. Do not enumerate crews at stateside home. All merchant vessels were homeported, regardless of location, so crews were not included in overseas population. 2. Connecting Through RootsWeb. Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- With a lot of "LUCK" By Philip A. Cochran Pacochran29@hotmail.com With the surname of LUCK any Internet search can bring up thousands of "hits." I have been searching for a long time on the ancestry of my 3great-grandfather Edson Samuel LUCK (good luck on this one). Depending on where you look his name in different, in most public records he is listed as Edson or Addison LUCK, in the Catholic Church records he can be found as Anselme, Samuel or Edouard LACHANCE. He lived and died in Clinton County New York, which did not require the keeping of public records till the 1880s, so most of the research has been done with Catholic Church records. As he was born in the earlier 1830s (1831-1836, depending on which record you look at) and most Catholic Church records that far back for Clinton County are nonexistent I decided to try for his marriage record. I knew that he was married to Josephine FACTEAU, around 1855, as that is when their first child was baptized, but I couldn't find any record for it. Through other sources and researchers I had found that Josephine was the daughter of Louis FACTEAU and Desange JODOIN, but they did not have anything on Edouard/Edson. I had checked the published marriage records for Clinton County and couldn't find it, though I did find one for her sister in 1854 at St. Joseph de Corbeau in Coopersville, New York. I had some circumstantial evidence of who his parents were, but I couldn't prove it. Then I found out that Edson had served in the 118th regiment, Co. I, in the Civil War and that he filed for a pension. I sent for those papers though no parents were listed. In one paper in mentioned that he had been married by a Justice of the Peace (JP), and in another one it said he was married by a Father Lapeak -- both said in 1851. I found a priest by this name serving at St. Joseph de Corbeau in Coopersville, New York in the same time frame. This information got me thinking that maybe they had been married by a JP and then when they could get to the priest they had their marriage rehabilitated/blessed by the priest. I also wondered if the marriage had been just blessed if somehow it was missed. I posted a message on the Clinton County, New York Message Board looking for the address of where I could write to have someone check the records. I got a response from "Camille" who said that she had ordered from LDS the microfilm records for this parish and she would be glad to look it up. She got back to me a few days later saying that she did not find anything in 1851. I was a little depressed but would continue my search. A couple of weeks later I got in e-mail form her with the line "Good Luck by Lachance." She had found the marriage record in 1854, and the coincidence is that it was on the same day as Josephine's sister. Somehow the transcribers for the book missed it. He was listed as Samuel LACHANCE, age 20, son of Samuel LACHANCE and Salay LUCIA. I had the proof connecting him to the couple I thought. It was thanks to "Camille", and her remembering me that I finally had my proof. This has gotten me back to Edson's grandparents Samuel LUCK and Marie COUSINEAU around 1800 in Canada, where, of course, I am stuck again, and the search continues. 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG [Editor's note: The opinions expressed herein are those of the authors and are not necessarily those of the editor or of RootsWeb.com]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Genealogy is a Hobby By Di Poppitt bridip@hotmail.com Cambridgeshire. England. I agree with everyone who said "Lighten Up." If you do, you have fun. If someone wants to put my research on the Net, it saves me the time. If it's wrong, I don't get the blame. I would rather complain about some- one taking my seat at a viewer in a record office while I am busily photocopying. Now, that is bad manners. * * * Aging Tales By Karen Start b1b40708@telus.net After reading some of the stories about how ages changed over the years, I felt I should include my own experience. In researching my paternal grandmother's side of the family who were living in Chelsea in England, with the surname ALDIR, I came across these differences from one census to the other: 1841--(age is supposedly rounded down to the nearest 5 years) Balthazar ALDER, age 50. 1851-- Balthazar ALDIR, age 60 (daughter) Harriet BENBOW, age 31 1861--Balthazer ALDIR, age 78; Harriet BENBOW, age 41 1871--Belshaser ALDIR, age 94; Harriet BENBOW, age 49 1881--Belshazar ALDIER, age 101; Harriet BUNDON, age 49 1882--Balthasar ALDIRE died 6 Jan 1882, age 101 1901--Harriet BENBOW, age 81 I think there must have been a kind of status for Balthazar to be so old, and it seemed his daughter Harriet thought it was better to be younger for a time, and then she "caught up" in 1901. I haven't yet found her in 1891 to see how she handles her age, but I have to wonder how old she'll be in 1911, if she's still around at that time! What a fun game this is! * * * Leaving a Written Legacy By Melissa Parnell mjparnell@earthlink.net http://home.earthlink.net/~mjparnell/ This is more of a question than an article, but perhaps there is some interest in publishing/answering it. The county in which I grew up will be publishing a family history book this year. My family has decided to place an entry. We will have separate entries for my parents as a couple, one for my sister, and one for me. My mother has "elected" me to do the writeup for each of us. My question is, if you had this resource for a family you were researching from, say the 1800s, what all would you want to know about the person? We are limited to 100 words for each entry. My sister and I are both single and have no children. I would like for my great-great-grandchildren's research on me to be much easier than my research on MY great-great-grandparents. 8.
