News and Notes: ------------------ 1a. The RootsWeb.com Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and Privacy Policy have been updated. Although the majority of the policies regarding website content remains the same, the updated policies include more specific information that gives clarification to policies that were at one time vague. The most notable change is in regard to the WorldConnect project. Information about living individuals will now be routinely purged from trees hosted on WorldConnect. If no death date is provided in a file, then all genealogical information on persons born in 1930 or later will be removed. The word LIVING will replace the given name, while the surname will remain visible. This decision was made with extensive thought and reflection on the interests and requests of our users, and the ongoing need to protect the rights of the living. We do understand that many researchers have a desire to share their growing family tree, which includes living people, with others. The Online Family Tree, available on Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com, allows users to do this in a secure environment. After registering for a free membership on Ancestry.com or MyFamily.com, users will have the opportunity of inviting trusted individuals to view their trees on a secure server. Please note that those who are registered members Ancestry.com or MyFamily.com already have the ability to do this. Users will need to log-on to Ancestry.com using their current user name and password and select the "Family Trees" tab. Users will then be able to upload an existing tree, or create a new tree from scratch. We continue to appreciate your participation and ongoing support of RootsWeb.com. * * * 1b. Utilizing WorldConnect. If you find genealogical information of interest to you on WorldConnect http://wc.rootsweb.com/ and want to save it to examine more closely later, you have a couple of options. First you can view and copy/print out certain genealogy reports -- when there is sufficient information in the database to produce them. Additionally, you might be able to download part or all of the file in a GEDCOM format. WorldConnect submitters may or may not allow a portion or all of their files to be downloaded via the DOWNLOAD GEDCOM option. However, many are willing to share their information on a personal basis. If you do not see the DOWNLOAD GEDCOM link on a database of interest, e-mail the submitter and ask. WorldConnect submitters' e-mail addresses are included on each page of their databases. If the submitter allows it, there will be a clickable link that says DOWNLOAD GEDCOM in the line of links at the top and bottom of the database's pages. The information included in the GEDCOM you download will reflect the options the submitter decided to include. Most genealogy programs allow you to import family trees that are in GEDCOM (*.ged) format, but be careful in naming any imported GEDCOM files -- you do not want to overwrite your own files. Detailed instructions on downloading a GEDCOM from WorldConnect may be found at: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcresults2.html The line of links also includes any genealogy-style reports available for the individual entry you are viewing. Not all report types will be available for all individuals. For example, if the individual whose entry you are viewing had no descendants listed in the file, then there will not be a descendant-ordered Register report available. The number of generations included in the various reports depends upon the submitter's choice and the data found in the GEDCOM that was uploaded to WorldConnect. Genealogy-style reports are: ---DESCENDANCY -- a display chart showing an outline with selections ranging from three to 10 generations. ---PEDIGREE -- available in traditional table chart (four generations) or text (three to 10 generations) format. ---AHNENTAFEL -- displays from two to six generations. For more information about Ahnentafels (German for ancestor tables) see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm#Ahnentafel ---REGISTER -- produces a descendant-ordered report, which will range from two to six generations. The pedigree charts and genealogy-style reports displayed on the WorldConnect pages in a submitter's file are not produced by the submitter's computer software, but rather by the WorldConnect program itself, which also creates an Index. The WorldConnect-created charts and reports are derived from the information included in the GEDCOM file that the submitter created from his genealogy data on his computer. In order to have your own family tree data displayed in a similar manner you need to create a GEDCOM from the file on your computer and upload the GEDCOM to WorldConnect following the instructions found here: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igmuser.cgi There might be occasions when you would like to share a portion of your genealogy file with an e-mail acquaintance, new-found cousin, members of a Mailing List, or in a query or query response on a RootsWeb Message Board. However, the hassle of opening your genealogy program, locating the file you wish to copy, and selecting and formatting the report you want to send just doesn't seem worth the effort. Solution: If you have a GEDCOM on file with WorldConnect you can accomplish this feat without any of the work. Simply go to your file on WorldConnect and locate the individual upon whom you wish to base the chart or report. Click on the appropriate link in the line of links to view the type of chart you wish to copy. Copy the chart, or any portion of it, to the Windows clipboard. Paste the chart into an e-mail, or onto a Message Board. In many genealogy programs, various reports are produced as Rich Text Format (RTF) or Portable Document Format (PDF) and these are not always easy to use when sending information via e-mail or posting to a Message Board. However, WorldConnect reports can easily be pasted into an e-mail note or onto a Message Board, because they are in plain text format. WorldConnect submitters have a couple of other important benefits: -- If their genealogy files become lost or corrupted, they can download their own entire original GEDCOMs via the RETRIEVE GEDCOM button on the WorldConnect setup page by using their database password and user code. http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igmuser.cgi --When they are away from their home computers -- in a library or hotel room for example -- they can obtain genealogy reports and download their own GEDCOM from anywhere they have access to the Internet. * * * 1c. Tips from Readers: "Winging it on Surname Searches" Thanks to: Jack jacquesratcliffe@yahoo.com I have ancestors named BIRD, which makes doing searches online difficult because it brings up so many ornithology references instead of links to family history. However, I've discovered some search engines permit you to specify that you want your search limited to a specific surname field. The RootsWeb Message Boards, http://boards.rootsweb.com/ for example, allow an advanced search that is limited to this field. Other databases with surname fields also permit surname specific (as opposed to every word) searches. I have learned look to see whether an advanced search feature is offered when searching on my surnames that are also common words or given names. And, when posting a query on a Message Board about such surnames remember to complete the surname field, if one is available, because the purpose of providing such a field is to enable a surname-only search to help others find you. 2. Connecting Through RootsWeb. Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Linking Lines: Part 2 --Willow and Damien willowa@nor.com.au I can't thank you enough for being and for running my piece "Linking Lines from Down Under" in the RootsWeb Review [RWR5:42 16 October 2002]. The response has been amazing, and I have not only filled in some gaps, but also met a few really great cousins. It's taken me a month or more to pull together all the different people under their surname interest and make sure everyone gets whatever info got sent to me, but I'm almost there -- some of them have got back to me and said they have found a link with each other, and that's just great! What RootsWeb does truly incredible -- and what genealogy does to bring people together from all across the world also is a great blessing in these very odd times we live in. Thanks again. 3. From RootsWeb Review's Bottomless Mailbag [Editor's note: The opinions expressed herein are those of the authors and are not necessarily those of the editor or of RootsWeb.com]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Straightening Out Wrong Turns --James Davis JARO928@aol.com Researching: DAVIS, HAWTHORN(E), BOYETT, DICKERSON, O'DONNELL, SHRADER, SMITH, and SHELTON First let me say that RootsWeb is the best hands down -- none can compare. I always enjoy reading the newsletters, especially the personal stories that people send in. I have been reading lately about information obtained that is not verified. True some info maybe wrong. A lot is due to writings on old records and how people interpret the writing. Take for example I had an uncle whose name was Lee but one nice lady thought she was seeing Lu. When you looked at the writing of the census taker it did look like Lu. Unless you knew the family you would have thought they had a daughter instead of a son. I have met so many wonderful relatives and people via RootsWeb -- Linda in Wyoming; Diane in Virginia; and Irene in Texas. If it had not been for them I would know nothing about either side of my family. Recently I met a wonderful lady who supplied me with info on my mother's side that puts Governor/General John Sevier, of Tennessee, as my 1C6R (first cousin six times removed). My belief is that one should not be afraid to share what info they have. Some of it may be wrong. Some of it may be right. But sharing and working together helps straighten out the wrong turns. Nothing shared is nothing gained. * * * Sharing, Caring, and Paying --Suzi Plooster mplooste@du.edu I always find it interesting to receive requests for my genealogy information and usually I always try to help people with their requests. I often answer queries on different mail groups. I am always happy to share the work of my labors. However, what I find perplexing is that so few who receive the information are willing to carry their share of the load. The work that I have done over 14 years has carried with it a very large price tag. I now request that everyone I share information with pay for the postage on the packets of materials and pay me 10 cents per page for copying. This barely covers the expense of the actual materials and, of course, my time and research are gained free. Yet, so often the requester tells me they do not want it if they have to pay for it. Surely they should realize that I have initially born the costs of this research and paying for postage and copying is a very minimal amount. Folks who request information should be willing to pay their own way, and not think that now because all the hard work has been done it is always free to them. Yes, I know that information posted on the Web is often free. However, I choose to keep control of my information and feel that it too needs to be honored. However, I have given information out and later find that they have posted my information on the Web without my permission and with out attributing the researcher who did the work. Every genealogical searcher whether on the Internet or in private transactions needs to be willing to: 1. Pay your own way. 2. Acknowledge receipt of all materials promptly. 3. Thank the giver for all the information. 4. Ask permission of the researcher from whom you received the information if you may post it on the Web. 5. If permission is given the researcher must be given credit for the research on the posting. Courtesy, honor, and ethics are a necessity in sharing genealogical information. * * * Conquering a Formidable Foe --Betty "Opponent" Kittle JKittle@cinci.rr.com I've read about people typing common English word surnames into search engines and coming up with too many hits that don't apply to genealogy. It happens with foreign language surnames, too. When I began my genealogy quest, I typed my maiden name--GEGNER--into a search engine. The first 100+ pages were all written in German. Not able to read German and not wanting to miss out on anything (a GEGNER family had to be in there somewhere), I hit "translate this page." The hits ranged from topics about sports to politics, television shows, etc. GEGNER in German means "opponent." That's when I learned to add +family, +genealogy, +surname, etc. The hits dwindled quickly. * * * * 8. News and Notes from Ancestry.com: England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland: Parish and Probate Records. Parish and probate records are invaluable tools in discovering your ancestors. Prior to the mid-19th century, civil registration of vital records was not required in all parts of Great Britain. As a result, these records remain particularly important to British genealogy. In recognizing this great value, Ancestry.com continues to add various parish and probate record databases regularly. These databases are a collection of historical parish and probate registers from the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. There are currently 15 million names ranging from the early 1500s to the mid-1800s. The records include baptisms and christenings, burials, marriages, gravestone inscriptions, obituaries, tax lists, wills, and other miscellaneous types of records. All of the data was converted as it was originally presented in various published registers and books -- including the interesting phonetic spellings. For these reasons, parish and probate records provide the best source of vital record information in the centuries before civil registration.
