News and Notes: ------------------ 1a.Effective Message Board Posting Queries. New messages posted on Surname Message Boards should include the surname (or a variant thereof) in the message and it also should be put in the Surname Box. For International (locality) and Topic Message Boards be sure to mention the appropriate connection in your message, and if it is a USA-County board, list the county. Use the State (Unknown County) Message Boards only if you do not know the county or if there are multiple counties involved. Resist impulse posting. Take a few moments to think about your query before you post or create a draft first. Planning ahead helps avoid the embarrassment that a hastily prepared, poorly thought-out, query can sometimes cause (like mixing up your family names, giving the wrong dates, and misspelling words). When writing your query keep in mind what you already know and what it is you wish to learn. Don't assume that anyone else knows what it is you seek. Include the name and identifying information for the individual or family about whom you are writing, the dates and/or timeframe involved, the location where the individual(s) resided, died, were born, or were married, and exactly what information you wish to learn. Be concise, but include all pertinent information that will help others ascertain whether or not they might have a connection or information to help you. You may use many international characters in your posts on Message Boards; for a list, see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/codes/ To include hotlinks (URLs) to other websites, other board messages, your WorldConnect family tree, etc. in a message, type in the URL (beginning with http://). But, do not use any HTML tags. The URL automatically becomes a hotlink when the message is posted. For additional hints on posting an effective query, see: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/503.asp http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/george/32.asp For proper use of the Subject line, Surname Box, and Classification menu, see "Message Board Queries" in the RootsWeb Review: Vol. 5, No. 30, 24 July 2002 ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/20020724.txt Posting Data From Documents: The mechanics are the same as posting a query except the appropriate document classification must be selected from the drop-down menu when you are posting information from public or private records. You may post complete transcriptions of documents or abstracted information. See RootsWeb's Acceptable Use Policy regarding posting such material: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html Providing the documentation of your source material is strongly encouraged. In the case of family Bible records it is most helpful to list the name of the person who has possession of the Bible and how the information was obtained from it. You may also wish to include an image file uploaded as an attachment in connection with your data post such as the scanned image of a will, a deed or the genealogy recorded in a family Bible. 1b. Quick Tips from Readers: From: Mary Skipworth mskip@xtra.co.nz Palmerston North, New Zealand To answer the problem aired in last week's RootsWeb Review: When you only know a baptism date but don't want the birthdate field to remain empty: enter birthdate = before [baptism date] Have a Quick Tip to share or found a great website located at RootsWeb? Connecting Through RootsWeb. Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Big Breakthrough for Down Under Researcher By Tammy Anderson revalot@hypermax.net.au Last year I decided to try again to find my biological father. I had tried before but not through the Internet and so I typed in "bio reunions" and got RootsWeb as my first site. It was there that I found the Lancashire (UK) Message Board and posted my details; few as they were. Two ladies wrote back almost immediately and gave me the 192.com website for residents in England, which is typical to a phone book. I gathered my father's namesake from these lists and wrote to 14 Gordon CHEETHAMS. I sent the message on the 3rd May, wrote the letters around the 20th and on the 20th June, approximately six-seven weeks after my initial postings, I had the letter in my hand that explained what I had needed to know all my life. I not only found my father, but two brothers and three sisters also -- all of whom are younger than I, ranging in ages from 22 to 34. I was 35 years old before I had even seen a photo of my father. This last year has been the most amazing year of my life. I have answers to so many questions -- little things like my baby was 10 pound 2, I have since found I have a sister and her baby was 12 pound 2 -- born only seven weeks before mine. I also have another sister and her baby was born three weeks before mine, my brother and his wife, a baby six months before. I can blame my father for my severe addiction to crosswords, too! The list is endless. I was very fortunate. My reunion is nothing short of brilliant. My heart is fuller than it is ever been. My father and his family all live in Blackpool (UK) and I live in Australia, having been brought here by my mother and her husband, who adopted me at age three, and became my dad. Posting that message on the board has completely changed my life. I cannot even begin to describe what I have felt over this last year but feel compelled to write and thank you all for everything you do for people like me. We are planning to go over to Blackpool in September next year to meet my family. I would like to say this: When embarking on such a journey, be gentle to yourself and to others and before you do anything, at least try to put yourself in their shoes and see how things were for them. When looking for your biological parents, it is no time to be judgmental. Go in with an open heart and respect each others' limits at any given time, and you will have a beautiful experience. Re-assure your parents as often as warranted that nothing has changed in your heart; you just need to find out where you are from. I wish everyone the best of luck in all their searches. 3. From Rootsweb Review's Bottomless Mailbag -------------------------------------------- Adventures in a California Cemetery I wanted to share this cemetery adventure. I stumbled across a genealogy site and replied to a query on my surname GRIGGS. We both acknowledged that we didn't recognize each other's relatives. Catherine is from Illinois and I live in California. Catherine mentioned that she had a maternal grandmother to die in California -- somewhere in French Camp [San Joaquin County]. Much to my surprise, as well as hers, I informed her that I was born in French Camp, which is on the outskirts of Stockton. I told her that the only thing in French Camp when I was born there was the hospital, jail, and an old Chinese Cemetery. The only other cemetery there is Rural Cemetery, and it is in the city of Stockton, but there are many graves from the 1800s so that was probably where her grandmother was buried. Why I asked -- I don't know, but I asked her if she wanted me to find her grandmother's grave and send the picture. Catherine, surprised, said yes, but forgot to tell me her name and when she died. We had a good e- mail laugh over it and she gave me the information -- HOUFF in 1959. Well, it was a holiday weekend and the cemetery office was closed, but a worker advised me of the general area to locate it. My twin sister, Delores, and I found the section, and started walking. After both of us had spread out over the section, I happened across an entire row of headstones of people who died in 1959. We had to pick around the grass to uncover the names and sure enough, we found it! My sister and I were so excited. We cleaned it, dusted, and washed it, and took pictures of each step, as I had promised Catherine I would do. Lastly, we placed flowers on the grave for Catherine as I'm sure she would have wanted to do for her grandmother. Then we went over to our grandmother's grave (CASTON-HUNT) and placed flowers on her gravesite as well. We knew our grandmother would have appreciated what we had done for Catherine. Next, we had the photos developed within the hour and scanned them and e-mailed them to Catherine. Her response was priceless. She was absolutely stunned that we did this for her. She then told me that her middle name was the same as my sister's, and her sister's middle name was the same as mine! In all honesty, it seemed the right thing to do, and we had a marvelous adventure. We have never done anything like this before, but it was absolutely fulfilling. Now, in case Catherine's family ever visits the gravesite, they know what the sign and entrance to the cemetery looks like and the section. We discovered something new too -- the plot number of the grave is right on the headstone. --Denise Griggs dgriggs@aagssc.org president, African American Genealogy Society of Sacramento, California http://www.aagssc.org/ * * * Head for the HILLs! My brick wall is my HILL line. Every search makes a mountain (of returns) out of mole HILLs. Almost every community out there has a town ending with HILL: Society HILL, Chestnut HILL, Squirrel HILL -- ah, the HILLS go on and on in Pennsylvania. We are a very HILLy state and town founders did a good job commemorating that. A goodly number of cemeteries and churches are on HILLs, but where are the HILLs who are in the cemeteries and churches? --Sarah MacMillan sarah.a.macmillan@verizon.com 8.
