News and Notes: ------------------ 1a. Posting on Message Boards from Libraries; Using an Ancestry Temporary Trial Account If you are using the RootsWeb/Ancestry Message Boards at a library, or if you are using an Ancestry Free Trial on your home computer, before you post a new message or reply to an existing message verify whether you are logged in under the library account or under the Free Trial temporary account. If so, you will see a LOGOUT link in the upper-right corner of the screen (you might have to scroll to see it). Click on the link to log out and either post your message or reply by completing the name and e-mail address boxes manually, or login using your own personal account information for use in posting your message. If you login using your own personal account in order to post or reply and you are using a library computer, be sure to log out when you have finished. This will prevent anyone else from posting under your account. To learn more about Message Boards, see also: "Message Board Administrators," (RootsWeb Review 5:34, 21 August 2002) "Visual Aids on Message Boards" (RWR 5:33, 14 August 2202; "Sign In, Please: Registering and Login" (RWR 5:32, 7 August 2002); "Portals to Success: Message Board/Mailing List Gateways," (RWR 5:31, 31 July 2002); "Message Board Queries," (RWR 5:30, 24 July 2002); "Message Board Solutions," (RWR 5:29, 17 July 2002) "Meandering Through the Message Boards" (RWR 5:28, 10 July 2002); "Discovering Display Options on the Message Boards" (RWR 5:27, 3 July 2002); "Getting the Most Out of Message Boards" (RWR 5:26, 26 June 2002); "Message Board Attachments" (RWR 5:23, 5 June 2002); and "Message Board Icons" (RWR 5:22, 29 May 2002) -- all previous issues of RWR are searchable and downloadable here: http://e-zine.rootsweb.com/ 1b. Quick Tips from Readers. Call the Library. In reply to Loring Hutchinson about putting identification on research notebooks that appeared in last week's RootsWeb Review, comes this tip from Mrs. Bersch mjbersch@worldnet.att.net I worked in a public library for nearly 18 years. I was head of the circulation department. We had things to stay in our lost-and-found for more than a year. We would post signs on the desk -- Have you lost anything? Ask at desk, etc. No reply. Prescription sunglasses, regular bifocal glasses, class rings, and once a college notebook with all kinds of ways to teach preschool children. No name, and I knew they were crying their heads off. Now I can't explain it, but your message made me think -- what if they had called the business office of the library? Or the reference desk only? I suggest that you look in the directory and since it is a large city library no doubt it is departmentalized. Look at the list under public library and call every one of those numbers that are listed. I am sure that notebook is there somewhere. Lots of luck. * * * Spam Fighting By Jim Bazemore jbazemor@attbi.com I ran across what I think is the best software for dealing with spam. I get about 100 spam items a week. This program bounces a message back to spammers that your e-mail address is invalid; thus your address is purged from their files. I don't have any connection with the software producers, but I do know how anoying spam is. One of the nice things about MailWasher is you can create a friends' list so that mail from RootsWeb and other wanted subscriptions don't get deleted. Just wanted to pass this along. The program is free for personal use. It can be found at: http://www.mailwasher.net/ [Editor's Note: RootsWeb Review does not endorse or recommend any particular spam filter or anti-virus software. To learn more about the former, please see "Anti-Spam Resources" at: http://www.email911.com/resources/antispam.html Read: "My Top Three Spam Filers," and "Where Does Spam Come From?" both by Kaitlin Duck Sherwood http://www.overcomeemailoverload.com/advice/TopSpamFilters.html http://www.overcomeemailoverload.com/philosophy/SpamSources.html ] 2. Connecting Through RootsWeb. Thanks for sharing your stories. Please send them to RWR-Editor@rootsweb.com in plain text ---------------------------------------------------------------- When the Time is Ripe By Roxann "Roxy" Brown seeker831@yahoo.com I posted this message on 7 March 1999: Alfred HARDT b. 8 May 1884 d.8 January 1959 m. Annie JAEGER b. 8 June 1893 d.15/22 July 1968. Both are buried in Westside Cemetery, Yorktown DeWitt County, Texas. I have no info on any of Alfred's ancestors. Annie was the daughter of Rudolph JAEGER, b. Berlin, Germany (no dates known), m. Emma VOGT (no info). Annie was born in Germany and came over with her parents as a child. I am told they came through Old Indianola and that her brother Paul learned to walk on the ship. Also her brother Willie made the trip with them. Any info will be helpful.--Thanks, Roxy. Well, three years (and many e-mail changes) later I received a reply from the grandaughter of my great-grandmother's brother. That landed me a picture of my immigrant great-grandparents -- Rudolph and Ema (VOGT) JAEGER. What a great thing to have! Not to mention someone to share the research questions with. Thanks, RootsWeb. * * * Closing a Chapter By Richard Cochrane rtbac550@juno.com Henry Clay COCHRAN (1843-1916) did not join the army during the Civil War, but his four brothers (older and younger) did. Why not Henry? I thought I would never know until an unknown cousin several states away came on RootsWeb with the answer. Early in life an anvil fell on Henry's leg and it had to be amputated. My cousin also gave me great amount of details on the youngest three brothers who I knew little about. This completed my search of my favorite generation of COCHRANS. Thanks to RootsWeb, I close a chapter. ==========================Paid Advertisement============================ The Aug/Sep issue of HISTORY MAGAZINE is on the newsstands now or you can get a free trial copy by visiting http://www.history-magazine.com/ Issue includes articles on "Coffeehouses," "History of the Postcard," "Secrets of Locks," "The Garment Industry," "Roller Coasters," "The Coast Guard," and many, others. From Rootsweb Review's Bottomless Mailbag -------------------------------------------- Joy of Genealogy Recently, whilst researching my father's family tree, I made contact with a lady who was researching another branch. She sent me an excerpt from an e-mail that she had received a couple of years earlier from a lady searching for her father's family. My father's sister-in-law had seven children. She had taken a position as a housekeeper for a widower with seven children of his own. She had a baby with this man, but passed away before the baby's first birthday. Her children were taken in by my father and his brothers and sisters, but the baby was adopted by another family. We were unaware of the adoption and were led to believe that the father kept the baby. I contacted the writer of the e-mail and learned that her father is/was that baby. I was able to connect the two families, and after many tears and much laughter this 70-year-old man finally has the brothers and sisters he lost so long ago. One sister is in California and is coming to Australia in October for a family reunion. I sent an e-mail to the lady who sent me the original e-mail excerpt to thank her for her input. Her reply: "This is what makes researching family history such a joy . . . " --Jacqueline Gilchrist cocopops2002@bigpond.com * * * Uh-Oh I love your stories about brick walls. My paternal grandfather's last name is OTO. There are a lot of medical terms that start with OTO, and a Native American tribe, a nightclub, a school, and a lot of typos where people misplace the space between words, like go to. I'm afraid to research my maternal grandmother's maiden name. It's DICK. Can you imagine what I might find. --Theresa Oto Stark Theresa55@webtv.net] * * * Day by Day Talk about hitting brick walls. I hit them every day. My great- grandmother's maiden name was DAY. Every day as I search for information about her father, John DAY, I hit the same brick wall. Day after day the search engine returns with data such as articles about which day farmer John sold his best cow to farmer Pete. How one day pastor Smith was thrown from his horse on his way to the Jones' farm.
