Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Forgotten Photo Just a Click Away By Megan Scott nee Nicel granvu@austarnet.com.au I read (often with a little tear in my eye) of the ways that RootsWeb touches the lives of others. Well, tonight it was my turn. Scrolling through my latest RootsWeb Review [RWR5:24] I noticed an address for a school I had briefly attended -- Tumbulgum State School in New South Wales, Australia -- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tumbulgum/tyalgum/genealogy.htm -- and thought "I don't remember having a photo taken," but decided to give it a go. Photos are a very scarce commodity in my family as we had neither camera or the resources to afford photos -- my parents were just able to keep us fed and clothed. Imagine the buzz I received to find a picture of myself on the website for the school. It really made my day. Thank you. This joy is also tinged with some sadness, as my mother passed away less than two weeks ago, and it would have been lovely to have shared it with her. 2. NEWS AND NOTES ----------------- 2a. MESSAGE BOARDS REACH NEW HEIGHTS. Many researchers are familiar with the immeasurable opportunities message boards provide to help you make a dent in your genealogical research. The value of these message boards has lead to a record of more than 10 million messages being posted to more than 126,000 boards on RootsWeb.com. Millions of family historians around the world use these message boards to exchange genealogical information and techniques, and many have connected with relatives and others who are involved in the pursuit of their family heritage. Join us in celebrating this mark of success by participating on the boards. With 50,000 new posts being added weekly, the RootsWeb and Ancestry Message Boards give you countless opportunities to plow through those brick walls in your research. 2b. BEST SITE. RootsWeb.com is named as one of Family Tree Magazine's annual 101 best family history websites in its August 2002 issue The full list can be found at: http://www.familytreemagazine.com/101sites/2002 2c. KLEZ IT, PLEASE. Educate yourself about viruses and worms because they do not go away. They are a constant threat and could destroy your valuable genealogical files. The current attack of the Klez worm, which forges the "from address" is fooling many RootsWeb Review readers, but this worm is NOT coming from RootsWeb's mailing lists or your editor. It is being sent to you privately by an infected computer (often without the owner's knowledge), with a stolen "From" e- mail address. It uses all sorts of subjects lines, which Klez also filches. Before you accuse someone of sending you the Klez worm, be sure you know how to read the e-mail header codes. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/headersfull.html And, before you throw the proverbial stone, be sure your own computer is clean. For a free online virus scan: http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/ Learn more about Viruses, Worms, and Hoaxes: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus 2d. EMPTY MAILBOX? Not getting mail from your RootsWeb mailing lists? Check with Password Central http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ (or click on Passwords tab in the RootsWeb masthead on any RootsWeb page) and have a list of all lists to which you are subscribed e-mailed to you. Perhaps you've been unsubscribed. This can happen for a number of reasons, including mail delivery problems on your ISP's (Internet Service Provider) end. If you are not subscribed, send a new "subscribe" request. However, if you are subscribed but not getting mail, check the archives of the mailing list(s) in question to be sure there have actually been messages posted (even genealogists have been known to get busy with other projects in the summertime): http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ If there are no posts in the archives, try getting things moving on the list by posting a query and starting a discussion. You might also ask the list administrator if she/he is willing to request that messages posted to a corresponding RootsWeb/Ancestry message board (if there is one) be "gatewayed" to the mailing list so that mailing list members will see all relevant posts for the topic of the mailing list and message board to help increase activity. However, if there are posts in the archives and you are not receiving them, write to the mailing list administrator at: LISTNAME-admin@rootweb.com (replace the word LISTNAME with the actual list name, but with no -L or -D appended). Ask the administrator if he/she has received any bounces for your mail, and if so, request copies so that you can show them to your ISP's tech-support representative. Whether there have been bounces or not, you should still contact your ISP's tech-support representative about your non-receipt of list mail. Once list mail has left RootsWeb, it is your ISP's responsibility to determine why you are not receiving it. 2e. DNA TESTING. Proving a name change can be one of the most perplexing and time-consuming research problems to solve. Did you know that with the mapping of the human genome (started in 1990), the world of genetics has offered the world of genealogy a quick and easy way to prove or disprove a name change in an ancestral line. By taking a DNA test, like Ancestry.com’s Paternal Ancestry (Y- chromosome) Test, with two male descendents of the ancestor in question, researchers can prove or disprove (within a 99% probability) that a name change has, or has not occurred in their common line. The test is painless. Participants simply swab the inside of their cheek and mail the swab directly to the lab. Once complete, participants will be given their own website to access their results. By comparing results between the two purported descendants, name change probability can be calculated. From there genealogists will know where to look, and perhaps more importantly, where not to look. For more information on using DNA testing to aid genealogical research, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/genetics/main.htm 2f. ROOTSWEB SERVER UPGRADE CONTINUES. To improve site performance, RootsWeb is upgrading its servers. As a result there will be times when you will be unable to access various portions of RootsWeb. When you encounter such problems, just try again later. Thank you for understanding, and excuse the dust. 2g. LOST ON THE INTERNET. Perhaps your cousin -- the one with *the* family Bible -- is looking for you, but is sending messages to your old e-mail address. Keep your e-mail address current on all the RootsWeb resources you use. For instructions in updating your address, see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/addresses/ 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- Surprises Perched Upon the Family Tree By Abigail in Missouri abigailyates@earthlink.net I started doing genealogy through one of my cousins, thinking that all I would find is a lot of poor farmers, I was born and raised in Northern California. Little did I know that "there was Indians in them thar hills." As I traced my MOON family to my YATES family I found out that I am a 16-generation bloodline to Pocahontas, related to President Thomas Jefferson through my RANDOLPHS and MURRAYs, that my 6-great-grandfather was the president of William and Mary College and the first American- born preacher of Bruton parish church in Williamsburg. Yes, I have found the poor farmers, too, and love finding them all, but the surprises have been wonderful . . . I have found many cousins from California to Virginia, and I have had cousins go to cemeteries and take pictures of graves, even had complete strangers go to cemeteries in Ohio and Oregon and find information for me. Yes, we genealogy people love to help each other . . . I have become very close to cousins found online and have traveled to California, South Carolina, and Virginia to visit them -- coming home a richer person by far in history of our great country, in family history and in love of family. I have found more in RootsWeb then any other site -- it was my first genealogy site. I use WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ a lot and I get a lot of information from the RootsWeb Reviews and love them both. They have been very helpful in my genealogy research. Keep up the good work. * * * Researching in Ireland By Kevin Kerwin kmkerwin@gate.net On a recent research trip to Ireland I visited the local Catholic church in the town my great-great grandparents came from. The church has indexed and has original records dating back to 1753, and for a fee the public can do research, including looking at the originals. I would like to warn all doing such research to verify the original passages against the index -- there were many typographical errors, some pertaining to names, and some to dates. One marriage record was wrong by 20 years, and only by finding the original was I able to clear up an apparent mismatch of parents and children. Alphabetizing can also be haphazard, so if you are looking for a surname starting in K, for example, look through all of the K's for examples of the name. * * * Warming the Cockles By LeeAnn Henderson leeann.henderson2@verizon.net I just want to tell you how much I enjoy getting your newsletter! Self onesimus@ix.netcom.com who credits The Collins Almanac http://collinslibrary.com/ (Selected from "The Mirror of Literature, Amusement and Instruction," June 26, 1824) From an original will, proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury: JOSEPH DALBY, late of the Parish of St. Mary-le-bone, proved July 27, 1784. "I give to my daughter, Ann SPENCER, a guinea for a ring, or any other bauble she may like better. I give to her lout the husband one penny to buy him a lark-whistle, I also give to her said husband of redoubtable memory, my ---hole for a covering to his lark-whistle, to prevent the abrasion of his lips, and this legacy I give as a mark of my approbation of his prowess and nice honour, in drawing his sword on me at my own table, naked and unarmed as I was, and he well fortified with custard." * * * LOVE OLD NEWSPAPERS?
