CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB. Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- BEST News Comes to Those Who Wait By Kimberly Sutherland Mills kmills@kfpl.library.on.ca I've always been interested in my family history, but did not delve too deeply until a few years ago. Going through some old papers in my grandmother's cedar chest, I pieced together quite a bit of information about my ancestors. Thankfully, my great-aunt had taken the time to interview her mother, Helen Forsyth BEST, many years ago. I knew the names of my great-grandmother's sister (Margaretta BEST WINCHELL) and brother (John Grier BEST), and that the family had lived in the Kansas City, Missouri area. Thanks to other genealogists working through RootsWeb, I was able to connect with a great-grandson of Margaretta's who lives in Virginia -- and received some surprising news. Margaretta and Helen had not had one brother, they had two, and the "new" brother's name was William Temple Forsyth BEST. No one knew what had happened to either of the "boys." That was almost two years ago. Around that time, I posted a message on a RootsWeb Message Board saying that I was looking for other descendants of Margaretta, John, or William BEST. I received a response from a granddaughter of Margaretta's from the San Francisco area. (Unfortunately, my Internet provider deleted my messages from an online mailbox, so I've lost her, but that's another story.) A year passed, and I didn't hear anything else until last week. Out of the blue, I received an e-mail from a Jim BEST. He thought my message referred to his grandfather. After sharing what each of us knew, we realized that we were related. His dad was my grandpa's cousin. He and his brother were thrilled to "meet" me, having given up any hope of meeting living relatives. Thank you, RootsWeb, for making this "family reunion" possible. I guess you never know what will happen if you wait long enough. Hopefully, a grandson of John Grier BEST will see this message, and I'll fill in the last of the puzzle. 2. NEWS AND NOTES ----------------- 2a. CALIFORNIA BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS. The California Senate is now considering legislation that would reduce the information available in that state's birth and death record indexes, which would render them significantly less useful and/or limit their use and access by genealogical researchers. That which to date has been available as a matter of law, would be unavailable as a matter of law, except by restricted access through a limited index in California County Clerks' offices. If you are concerned about the loss of access to these vital records and that such legislation, if passed, might mean other states would follow suit, please see: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/SB1614.html http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/NGS_FGS.html 2b. VOLUNTEERS. RootsWeb.com spotlights volunteers who make outstanding contributions to the worldwide genealogical community. In April RootsWeb initiated its Volunteer Appreciation Month, which highlighted someone each week and now selects one person each month to honor and recognize their work. Visit the RootsWeb.com Volunteer Appreciation Spotlight page http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/spotlight/ to read about who's who and who's doing what. Perhaps you know someone who should be recognized; if so, tell us about them and provide examples of their contributions by sending a note to: tera@my.rootsweb.com 2c. MESSAGE BOARD ATTACHMENTS. You have probably posted a message, or replied to one on the RootsWeb/Ancestry message boards: http://boards.rootsweb.com/ but are you using the boards to their fullest potential? Certain types of attachments -- GEDCOM files and graphic files, including pictures and scanned images -- may be attached to any board message. The potential uses of such attachments are endless. Post a transcription of a will, deed, or family Bible record and add a scan of the image of the original record for others to view and download. Perhaps you have unidentified family photos you would like to upload so that others might view, and possibly identify, the people in the pictures. If you have a photo of an ancestor's tombstone upload it when posting an obituary for that individual. Signature comparisons can help prove or disprove whether you have found the correct ancestor. Actual scanned signatures may be uploaded and added to a post for researchers to examine. In addition to posting a query, attach a GEDCOM of your family tree that may be downloaded by other researchers. You may add up to five attachments to any single message. Graphics files will be converted to .JPG or .GIF format upon upload. Files other than GEDCOMs and graphics files are not accepted. To add an attachment click on "Attachments: [Add]" when viewing the POST NEW MESSAGE or POST REPLY screen. Either type in the path to the location of the GEDCOM or graphics file on your computer, or click on the browse button to navigate to the file and then select it for uploading. After you have located your file or files and the paths are showing in the boxes next to the browse button, click on SUBMIT option to upload the files. Complete your message and remember to click on POST. You also can select PREVIEW if you want to proofread your message before you select POST. The attached files will be accessible when anyone views your message. When viewing a message, look for the icon -- it's a colorful swirl within a box -- beneath the message. That denotes there is an attachment to that post. 2d. VIRTUAL SUMMER SCHOOL. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- Hanging on to the Olde Sodde By Sarah MacMillan sarah.a.macmillan@verizon.com I was researching a branch of my mother's family tree, following the trail to Ireland. My great-grandmother emigrated in 1902 from County Mayo and settled in northern Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of six children. Two boys went to England to find work and the three girls came to America to find husbands. Her daughters, my grandaunts, told me about the brother who remained on the family farm in Mayo. I wrote to the widow of his son, who was still living there with her children. After several months passed, I received a letter from England responding to my inquiry. My new-found cousin, a Catholic priest, is not a descendant of the brother who stayed in Ireland -- he is from one of the boys who went to England. He was visiting the homestead in Ireland when he saw my letter laying on the table unopened. He asked his cousin, "Who was writing from America?" She said she did not know and was not opening the letter to find out. He asked if he could open it and was granted permission. After reading my letter he asked her why she didn't want to open it. She said that she was afraid we (the American descendants) would want a part of the farm for ourselves. Father Bernard wrote to me immediately upon returning to England and told me that they didn't know they had relatives in America. The boys and girls had lost track of each other because of the distance between them. He was a wealth of information. His niece and nephew have visited and I have visited them. You never know where your written word will end up. Even if it takes a long time, send those letters and hold out hope that someone will eventually respond. * * * Fixing Fading Slides By Vangy Maddox jlm.fgc@worldnet.att.net It was helpful to hear of the ways people have saved their old slides to CDs. This project is one that I am just beginning. But the problem that Heidi raised in her first message (RWR 5:18 1 May 2002) still is my problem -- the fading of these old slides. I have some from 1955. Do any RootsWeb Review readers remember these? When we got the 2"x2" transparencies we also had to buy a mounting pack that consisted of 2"x2" glass slides and metal frames that held the sandwich of glass -- transparency -- together. Well, I have a HP ScanJet 5370C that does wonderful work on pictures, negatives and slides -- except the really old ones. Even with color, intensity and tone adjustments when they are faded there is not much I have been able to do. And, yes, they have been stored in metal slide boxes but they still have faded. I wish someone had a trick to share that would help. [Editor's Note: One reader recommends "Color Correction" information that is available at Wayne Fulton's website, A Few Scanning Tips: http://www.scantips.com/color.html ] * * * Accommodating Sextons By Nancy Beasley nbeas@aol.com The "R.I.P. The Sexton and Stone" humor (RWR 5:22 29 May 2002) reminded me of a personal sexton story from several years ago: The difficulties encountered several years ago in trying to find my husband's grandparents' gravesites led me to write a blind letter to the sexton of the cemetery in a small Southern town. My trusty contemporary road atlas assured me that even today, Whiteside had a total population of about 300 people. Jumping to the conclusion that perhaps one small town would have one small cemetery, I simply addressed my inquiry to "The Sexton, Whiteside Cemetery, Whiteside, Tennessee". I was elated to receive a reply from a woman who asked me, "How did you know I was the only Sexton left in Whiteside?" She enclosed several original newspaper obituaries from the 1930s with information I was seeking, as well as reconstructing some old family stories with new details. Only when I reached the end of the letter did I realize that the local post office was not familiar with the New England term "sexton" as the keeper of the cemetery, and had forwarded my letter to a Mrs. Sexton -- still living in the town. She was 95 years old, had known the grandparents personally, and was still maintaining scrapbooks of local events. Serendipity prevails! 9. HUMOR: Kah to Marry Boom -------------------------------------- Thanks to the Associated Press. Kah-Boom was the headline in a recent engagement announcement in the Flint (Michigan) Journal, and even the bride's mother is laughing. However, Laura Kah says she will not hyphenate her new name after she marries Scott Boom this December -- for obvious reasons. 10.
