CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB. Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- War Bride Finds English Kin By Suzanne Legill slegill@swbell.net My mother was born in England in 1925 and grew up there, around London and then in Ware, Herts. [Hertfordshire]. She was a teenager during World War II and was 20 years old when she met my father, an Army Air Corps sergeant. They were married in England and moved to the United States. She traveled over on the ship, "Queen Elizabeth," with about a "million" other war brides. For about 40 years, she lived in the States and then finally got to fly back to England and visit friends. [Editor's Note: See the WARBRIDES-L Mailing List. It was created in order to put World War II war brides and their children in touch with others and to share reminiscences. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Military/WARBRIDES.html ] Her mother and sister have since immigrated to the States, so her only other living relatives in England are first cousins, but she lost contact with them years ago. Through RootsWeb, I finally was able to locate the THAKE cousins -- Donald, Stephen and Jenny (THAKE) TAYLOR. In May, my mother, sister and I are flying to England to visit them. Luckily, they all have e-mail and we communicate regularly now. My mother is 77 and it will probably be her last trip to England. We are so excited to have found them and I wanted to thank everyone who works with RootsWeb for helping bring us together. * * * Making Connections via Message Boards By crafferty crafferty@earthlink.net I have only been researching my family tree for a few months and, quite honestly, didn't know what I was doing or even the proper way to go about it. Thanks to one of your Message Boards I was able to find, not only information on my ancestors, but second and fourth cousins, both eager and willing to share their information with me! I would like to thank RootsWeb for its wonderful site. Without it I wouldn't have found my extended family, nor all of the wonderful information on my ancestors. 2. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- Virtual Bouquet for Cambria County, Pennsylvania By Linda Braund lbraund@att.net I'm absolutely thrilled that my WALTZ and McGOVERN ancestors lived in Cambria County, Pennsylvania -- because if they hadn't, I wouldn't be able to make use of the PACambria Web site (part of the USGenWeb Project) that is hosted by RootsWeb. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacambri/ I've only been doing family history research for a relatively short period of time (a little over two years), so I didn't even realize at first how lucky I was to have the resources of the Cambria County site at my disposal. It wasn't until I started to branch out to other counties that I realized what a magnificent job that Lynne CANTERBURY and Diann OLSEN are doing with this Web site. I'm not trying to belittle other Web sites (because I have since personally learned the effort required to keep a site going), but I believe that Lynne and Diann should get a little recognition for the superior job that they've done. I think other county coordinators and webmasters should take a look at the PACambria site to see an example of what to strive for. All the information is clearly laid out so that it can be immediately accessed. And, what information they have available: Census data, cemetery listings, biographies, courthouse records, newspaper articles, old photographs, surname register, transcribed books, obituary index, military from the county, township sites, maps -- you name it, they've got it, plus more. I believe that the reason so much is available is that both women are receptive to ideas for submission from site visitors and Cambria County Mailing List members. They are always willing to work with you to get your information online, and most likely in a manner better than you ever thought of yourself. As a result, contributors begin to feel very connected to the site, wanting to contribute even more, making it even better. Also, Lynne and Diann are constantly thinking of ways to improve and add to the site. They work very hard on this site--and it shows. So, thanks Lynne and Diann for all your efforts. You have done a terrific job, and I just wanted you to know how much it is appreciated. You deserve an award--just wish there was one available to give you! * * * Making It Plain By Jeanne Lewis pom.ki@xtra.co.nz I fully agree with Carol Nutile Burke's letter "Communicating Around the World" [RWR 5:10, 6 March 2002] and I thank the writer of the "Think Globally" letter [RWR 5:9, 27 Feb. 2002]. I agree that all postings should somehow indicate the full spelling of the locations mentioned in the posting. Abbreviations are not helpful, since if one is reading the Message Boards from locations outside of the United States, then "CT" has no useful meaning. I subscribe to a number of Surname and Locality Message Boards and at times have difficulty working out the abbreviation used on messages received. Regardless of how many researchers are in the United States and Canada, there are also other countries of this very wide world we live in and there will without a doubt be many million of researchers living within them. Yes, researching is all about "Working thing out for oneself" but there are many "Newbies" and we should try to make it easier for them and other researchers, where it is possible. I live in New Zealand and if I used abbreviations of its cities, towns, etc. there would be many in the world that would have no clue to where they were. * * * If You Spell It Out, There Is No Doubt! Pat Hormell pjhormell@hotmail.com I believe the author of "Other Thoughts on International Communications" (RWR 5:10, 6 March 2002) is being unfair to other researchers from any country when he states "It should be presumed that unless otherwise specified that all two-letter abbreviations are U.S. states or Canadian provinces." I am from the States and still have a problem deciphering some of the information. I know everyone has good intentions, and they try to be correct, but I have found instances where the abbreviation for states are incorrect, along with other information. For instance, I ran across information posted as MA when I know personally that the information should have been ME for Maine. I recently received some information from a cousin (for which I am most grateful) but a lot of the locations only had a city or township. We all complain about the census takers and their bad writing, but then we turn around and do no better. If you spell it out, there is no doubt! Several weeks ago I read a note from someone that stated he had trouble with Americans using abbreviations and assuming that everyone knew what they meant. It made me think about all the time I have spent looking up names on maps and trying to figure out the "whole" location. I went through my database and made sure that everything is spelled out in full. At least if I spend time on a few extra keystrokes, I know that my information will not be misinterpreted and someone may just make a connection that would otherwise be lost. I like puzzles, but there are some I would rather not have to figure out when it would only take a few extra keystrokes. 7.
