Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- SOLVING 100-YEAR-OLD MYSTERY REQUIRES SOME MULTI-TASKING By Grace Gleason ggleason@widomaker.com My 3-great-grandmother, Jeanette KUYKENDALL, was the youngest child in a very large family. By his first wife (name unknown), Peter KUYKENDALL had nine known children; by his second, Ruth WYATT, he had eight more. The oldest of Peter and Ruth's children was named Wyatt. For many years, KUYKENDALL family researchers have been puzzled by the name of Wyatt KUYKENDALL'S wife. On 24 April 1832, Wyatt married Jane STONE in Cooper County, Missouri. Everything written about his wife thereafter (censuses, etc.) called her Vashti. She has often been referred to as Vashti (Jane) Stone, but with a good bit of reservation. One day as I was punching KUYKENDALL variant spellings (more than 50 so far) into the Ancestry's "Missouri Marriages to 1850" database looking for Jeanette KUYKENDALL and her husband, William ADAMS, up popped "KIRKENDOLL, Wiat and Vashti, GLOVER". I thought, "That's my Wyatt, and Vashti isn't Jane STONE!" A check of the Cole County, Missouri Census for 1830 [at that time available only as USGenWeb images] revealed a John GLOVER with several daughters who would have been of marriageable age in 1834 -- and one of them was "missing" on the 1840 census. I subscribed to RootsWeb's Cole County, Missouri mailing list http://lists.rootsweb.com/ and asked where I could obtain an old marriage registration. A nice person, who chooses to remain anonymous, said to hold on for a couple of days, and proof would be in my hands. Within a week, I had a copy of the registration book page, and information on how to get a certified copy, if needed. [Editor's Note: For tips on finding and using vital records, see: RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees, Guides 5, 6 and 7: http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/ ] The text of the registration reads: "State of Missouri, Cole County: I certify on the Thursday the second day of October 1834 I solemnized the rite of matrimony between Wiat KIRKENDOLl of Cooper and Vashti GLOVER of Cole County, Missouri. Given under my hand this 10th day of December 1834. Archebald MCCORKLE M.G. Recorded on the 11th day of December 1834 Jason HARRISON, Clk." Apparently, Jane STONE died within a short time after their marriage, and Wyatt then married Vashti GLOVER. Since the only record of the second marriage was in Cole County, and they lived in Cooper County, Missouri, no one thought to look two counties away for it. Thanks to Ancestry, RootsWeb, and to RAOGK, (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) http://www.raogk.org/ the mystery is solved. And with the addition of the Cole County, Missouri Marriages database, I now have a list of four "possible" sisters for Vashti. Now, if I could only be as lucky on Jeanette KUYKENDALL and William ADAMS. 2. NEWS AND NOTES ------------------ 2a. CENSUS IMAGES ONLINE PROJECT. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- ANOTHER SLANT ON OLD HANDWRITING By Mary Ann Wunder Ottowun@home.com I read the article by Kurt Pickering, "But, Grandma, What a Funny Name You Have" [RWR 4:52, 26 Dec. 2001] and I have read a lot of census transcriptions in my research, as well as looked at the images online of the census from the 1800s. What Kurt found and read as "EWING" probably really was written as "EVANS," but with changes in the teaching of handwriting over a period of about 100 years, no one writes like that any more and it looks the same (to us). I would never have thought that "Mary" and "Nancy" could be written to look the same, but they were. Not only the handwriting, but the spelling by a census taker who perhaps did not ask, has caused a great deal of problems. We knew Isaac WUNDER was born in 1852 and married by 1880 with two children born between 1870 and 1880. We knew Edward WUNDER was born in 1828. We knew this from the one WUNDER family picture taken in 1911 with four generations of WUNDERs that survived and had the names and ages written on it. We knew the eldest child was Mylton, born in about 1875. I purchased a transcription of the 1880 census and looked and looked. No Edward, No Isaac, No Mylton. And I tried everything. We knew next to nothing about Edward or his relationship to Isaac, other than he was one generation older. Isaac and Mylton were father and son. Isaac was rumored to have been born in Ohio, Mylton in Missouri. One day, cousin Bob popped up with an e-mail and eventually we traded enough information that I was able to search my 1880 census transcription for the name Isaac and the occupation butcher (which Bob had discovered was a family occupation of the WUNDERs who moved to Ohio). Imagine my surprise when Edward and a spouse showed up in a household also consisting of Isaac and a spouse, a George and a spouse, a William as a son and an Edna as a daughter, and another son, Benjamin. But the surname had been transcribed "WEMDER." And they were right there in Springfield, Missouri, all the time -- hiding from me under an erroneous name. Eventually I went to the images online to read through the pages to find them in the original writing when I realized that "Mylton" spelled "Milton" actually could have been "William" if the transcriber so desired (and this one had). I found my grandmother's grandmother in nearly the same way -- Eliza Lane married 3 times (but my grandmother never told me about the final marriage) to John GLASS, William COPELAND and a Mr. RIGGS. I knew her daughter Alice COPELAND had married before 1880, but thought they lived in Iowa and finally I checked Illinois. There they were, Alice living with her mother (Eliza RIGGS) and a brother (James COPELAND whose surname appeared as RIGGS) while Alice's spouse was living on a nearby farm working as a farm hand. I found in the Illinois statewide marriage index the final marriage of Eliza (and her second marriage) and determined that a marriage after 1870, would not produce a child aged 23 in 1880. But I still don't know if James was adopted by Mr. RIGGS or whether the census taker flubbed it. [Editor's Note: Before and even some time after the middle of the 19th century most spelling of surnames in the U.S. was phonetic -- spelled as they sounded to the one recording them. Moreover, not all of the enumerators and court scribes were native-born Americans and their spellings would differ. See: "Why You Can't Find your Ancestors" http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/lesson8.htm ] * * * STOP RIGHT THERE, MATE By Beverley Harris. bharris@eck.net.au While reading the stories re "Guys in Pickups" [RWR 5:2, 9 Jan. 2002] turning up and giving exact directions at the most appropriate time, I thought about my own experience. My husband does not share my enthusiasm for genealogy, especially the part of searching cemeteries, but he duly went with me to a very large cemetery in Traralgon, Victoria, Australia. This is a particularly huge cemetery and I must say my heart sank when I saw the size of it. The office was not opened so I could get no help from there, my husband was only giving me a limited amount of time to search, too. I wanted him to let me out of the car at the gate as I did not want to miss any of the plots, but it was a hot day and he would not stop. He drove up the road a bit and then pulled under the shade of a large tree, where he intended to sit and wait for me while I looked. I jumped out of the car and my feet hit the ground running. I went to the right and looked at two graves and then found myself standing next to a family plot -- and, yes you guessed it, it was the family I was looking for. I called out to my husband, "I've found it!" He got out of the car and said, "You're kidding?" When I assured him I wasn't, he looked up to the sky and he was as white as a ghost. I am sure he thought divine intervention had caused him to stop the car at exactly the right spot in this huge cemetery. I too, think it was meant to be, and I was very thankful. I have, of course, photographed the graves and sent the photos everywhere, even to America where the family has extended to. 7.
