I just received my trial issue of FAMILY CHRONICLE, after reading about your special issue regarding "Genealogy on the Internet" on a RootsWeb list I belong to. I am a "newbie" and could use all the help I can get, which is why I thought getting your trial offer would be good. It came in the mail yesterday and I've read it twice since then! It was packed with information and provided additional insight on the quality of data obtained through the Internet, which I found very helpful. The articles regarding the various software programs available confirmed my own thoughts--good organizational tools. I highlighted the various Web sites noted throughout the issue and plan on checking out every one. I felt I just had to tell you how terrific this issue was to me. It is a delight! A goldmine of information, suggestions on research and assistance. In closing, I'd like to let you know that I am subscribing today. Sincerely, Linda T. Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- [Editor's Note: This is an appropriate time of year to count our blessings and remember to thank all those who have shared information and helped us find our relatives, "lost" links, old pictures, and family Bibles. Thanks to RootsWeb I received a message that a Bible belonging to my grandfather was for sale on eBay. As a result I was able to obtain it. It has some information on births and deaths , which is how they were able to find me. I enjoy reading the [RootsWeb Review] articles. I also have made contact with a distant cousin because of the Message Boards I posted on. Keep up the good work. --Mary Jane Warrior m_j_warrior@hotmail.com * * * ON THE TRAIL AGAIN. Years ago in going through my parents' papers I found a New Year's card mailed to them in late December 1956. The note on the card indicated it was from a cousin of my dad about whom I was unaware. My dad's younger brother, Edward Myers, had sent the cousin a Christmas card and enclosed a photo of himself, my dad Robert, and another brother, H. Eugene. The New Year's card to my parents was in response to the photo. The note on the card led me to believe that the cousin in Illinois had never met my dad. I knew from an obituary I had found for my dad's great-grandmother that my dad's grandfather had a brother Edward who had moved from his birthplace of Adams County, Pennsylvania, to Illinois. I figured my uncle Ed may have kept in touch with this branch of the family having been named for this grand-uncle. The card was postmarked Wheaton, Illinois, and there was a return address. The note was written by a Mildred Myers H--- but the last part of Mildred's married name was scrunched up in the corner of the card and was unreadable. She mentioned her husband Cloyd and her mother, Hannah Myers, who she said was 86 years old. She also mentioned Perry Myers' son Robert (probably because my dad was also Robert and both were probably named for yet another brother of my dad's grandfather, Robert Myers who lived in Washington, D.C.). I tried for years to locate any of these people using various Internet resources but couldn't locate Mildred Myers or her descendants because I was unable to decipher her married name. Recently, I received an e- mail from a new subscriber to the RootsWeb MYERS surname mailing list that I administer. The signature line in the e-mail included "Wheaton, Illinois." I inquired whether his MYERS ancestors were from Wheaton and briefly explained why I was asking. He replied that they were not, but he would see what he could find. Among other clues, he uncovered the surname I couldn't decipher was HALL. So I am now back on the trail, hunting for long-lost cousins, with at least one new tidbit of helpful information in hand. -- Joan Young JYoung6180@aol.com 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- HIGHLIGHTED PAGE DAZZLES RESEARCHERS. What a GREAT site mentioned in RWR 4:49 5 Dec. 2001! I had to hurry and send the URL to all 40 members of my Buell online research group. I am amazed at all of the information here. Some of this information has eluded us for years. We are scattered all over the USA, Canada, etc., and don't have access to many books and records. Jane Devlin makes so much data available on her Connecticut-related site. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ --Audrey Buell Peters NiteOwl226@aol.com * * * A STOREY-BOOK ENDING. My father's uncle, Johnny STOREY, immigrated to New Zealand in 1923 following the Irish Civil War in which both he and his two brothers displayed terrific heroism in defending their family against the IRA. Johnny never contacted his Irish relatives again and we thought perhaps that he had died. Then out of the blue, I visited an old friend and neighbour of Johnny's and we discussed why he immigrated and why we had not had any contact with him. Christy McAree, the friend and neighbour, rang me about a month later and said he had vital information about Johnny's whereabouts. My wife and I traveled down to see Christy who had known that Johnny married a lady in New Zealand with local relatives in County Monaghan [Ireland]. Christy took me to see these relatives and they had photographs of Johnny's wedding and knew the approximate area where he had settled in New Zealand. They also knew the name of the church that he had attended in New Zealand. I e-mailed a friend in Christchurch, Denise Johnston, and she phoned the minister of the church who gave her the address and phone number of Johnny Storey's descendants. After nearly 80 years of silence we are back in contact and intend visiting New Zealand just to meet our long-lost cousins. Without the Internet none of this would have happened. --Jack Storey jackstorey@firenet.ws 4. According to Brenda Normandin harrow444@hotmail.com the following is a true story gleaned from "Byrd Family Notes" and the handwritten notes of I. M. Byrd, originally from Yancey County, North Carolina and later of Victory, (Jackson County) Oklahoma. One morning Newt Byrd's wife, Tilda, sent him after wood so she could cook breakfast -- instead he went westward (during California Gold Rush) and returned 12 years later with no gold, but he stopped at the woodpile and took in the wood. "Here, Tilda, is the wood to cook breakfast," he is reputed to have told her. 9.
