Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- FINDING MY JOHANNA. By Connie olebones@yahoo.com I want to let you know it wouldn't have been possible if RootsWeb wasn't on the Web. I have been looking for years for the family of my 3-great-grandmother, Johanna SCHLEGEL, who was born 1828. All I knew was that she lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her parents in 1849 when she married Mathias KRUMHOLZ (born 1808). They had two children, Sophia (born 1850) and John (born 1855) while living in Pennsylvania. I had found information in an 1856-57 city directory that they lived on Mulberry Street and his occupation was listed as a laborer. In this same directory there was listed a Wm. SCHLEGEL, a tanner living on Spring Garden Road. I don't know if this was a relative of hers or not. While looking in WorldConnect at RootsWeb http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=:681362 I found this information. I was shocked beyond belief. I never would of found it if I hadn't just typed in the last name. The spelling of her given name was Johann though. Patricia McCure had it listed on her LINDENFELSER site. I contacted her to thank her. I want to thank you for letting folks list information. I will never be able to go to the places to look up information, and finding it has all been done on my computer. Thanks from a very grateful researcher. 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- JUST CALL ME 'TEX' By Janet "Tex" Etheredge (nee Mertz) avilionwhippets@webtv.net I read with interest the article "Family Tales Fraught with Pitfalls," by Susan Scouras (RWR 4:47, 21 Nov. 2001) and how nicknames can become a name. Reminds me of my own nickname I acquired at birth -given to me by my brothers. My brothers are 13 and 10 years older than I (there was another son in between us that did not survive). For my mother I was the long awaited daughter. My parents were born in Oklahoma and so were my brothers. I was born in Texas--thus the nickname of "Tex." This irritated my mother as she insisted I be called by my given name. My oldest brother would occasionally call me "Tex," but Neil ALWAYS called me by my nickname. When Neil sent me a letter, talked to me over the phone, or when we were together I was always "Tex". Any reference to me was "Tex" and he would introduce me to people as "Tex." It is hard for me to recall any time Neil ever called me by my given name. As we observed the first year of Neil's passing ( November 30th) this article reminded me how much I miss being called "Tex." Neil was a New Mexico state district judge and his secretaries knew me only as "Tex." Even in Neil's obituary I was referred to as "Tex." I haven't been called "Tex" for more than a year. This article brought back many fond and dear memories of times gone by. MONIKERS. MONIKERS. By Jan Veacock, janmveacock@yahoo.com of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia In my father's family of five siblings, my father was Reginald (called Reg), his sister Edith is called Topsy, his brother Leslie was always known as Bob (his name does not include Robert), his brother Leonard is called Len and the youngest brother, aka Jimmy, is legally named Horace but was supposed to be named Maurice and his father registered him with the incorrect name. James does not figure in his name! How Horace/Maurice became Jimmy, Leslie became Bob and Edith became Topsy is unknown. CLUES IN THE KITCHEN.(RWR 4:49, 28 Nov. 2001). Several readers wrote to inform us that the gravy CaptGone's grandmother used to cook is called red-eye gravy. There is some disagreement over ingredients though, but not enough to have a food fight over. CaptGone said Granny "poured the grease over coffee grounds." The culinary experts claim it is made out of drippings and by adding several tablespoons of black coffee (not the grounds) to the skillet. Red-eye gravy recipes can be found: http://chitterlings.com/messages/1308.html VIRGINIA WILL. After reading AN INTERESTING 1772 VIRGINIA WILL by Ella Winsbro (RWR 4:47, 21 Nov. 2001), I wanted to relate to Ms. Winsbro and others, that books of any kind were a scarce and sacred commodity as they required importation. The "Family Bible," often times the only book owned by a family, was used to teach reading and writing. Not to discount the religious implication, the importance of this book being passed for specified intervals among the family may have ensured an education for those within the household, and even the community. Thought it noteworthy.--Robin Jennings RJenn3110@aol.com Another reader, Ian Taylor, tfe@interlog.com writes: "Hoofman refers to his Bible as 'Great Bible.' This was a very specific title to an English Bible first published in 1539 and went to at least a fifth printing published in 1541. "This Bible was produced under the patronage of Thomas Cromwell (1485-1540), Earl of Essex and early relative of Oliver Cromwell born 59 years after the death of Thomas. The Great Bible was actually a revision of Matthew's Bible carried out by Coverdale and a copy was placed in every church in England in accordance with Henry VIII's injunction: 'In God's name, let it go abroad among our people!' This was the reason it had gone into the fifth printing so quickly. "Put in this perspective the two copies owned by John Hoofman certainly had sentimental and spiritual value but were also valuable antiques more than 200 years old. Their value for learning English would not have been particularly good however since they were in the English of the mid-16th century and used Gothic font and across spelling. For example, a first edition King James, published in 1611, is almost incomprehensible to readers of today; it too had Gothic font and inconsistent spelling. The KJ version we read today, excluding the NKJV and cleaned up versions, is actually the fourth edition of 1769. Thus, we are reading 1769 English and the language and certain word usage have changed significantly since that date. "One final word concerns John Hoofman's listing of 10 sons by name but then he mentions nine sons in his will. This may not be a mistake because he speaks of his nine sons 'by my last wife Mary.' Reasonably therefore to assume he had one other son by his first wife who may well have died in childbirth. This was very common in those days. It might also be that one of his sons, now grown, had turned away from the faith or had left the country and therefore was not to be included among those left to share ownership of the two precious Bibles. Hope this background material helps." 4.
