NEWS AND NOTES ------------------ 1a. IMPROVED DATE SEARCHING NOW AVAILABLE AT ANCESTRY.COM --------------------------------------------------------- This week Ancestry.com adds a powerful new date searching tool. It's an upgrade to the existing date filtering capacity on Ancestry.com's GlobalSearch. In the past, users would identify a 50-year time span which would eliminate from the search those databases whose records did not deal with that time period. Now, users can specify exact years or year ranges and filter the results specifically to those records which match the year range. As a result, searches can be much more specific to particular decades or even single years. Users will have two methods of using a date filter in their search. From the Ancestry.com front page, they can specify a single year with a plus/minus range of up to 25 years on either side. Using the advanced features at http://www.ancestry.com/search/main.htm, users will also be able to input a begin and end date for a flexible range search. NOTE: If the date filter is used, it will only search those databases with fielded dates and will drastically reduce search results. Researchers may want to experiment with various filter settings (or no setting at all) to make sure searches are not too narrow to avoid excluding legitimate results. Try out the new date filter at Ancestry.com's GlobalSearch at http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=3179&sourceid=481 1b. ALL U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS IMAGES ONLINE ----------------------------------------- For the first time, all available images of the entire United States federal census for the census years from 1790 to 1920 are on the Web, exclusively at Ancestry.com. The collection includes more than 425 million names on 10 million images. This completes the posting of images with the exception of some illegible scans, which represent only a fraction of a percent of the individual enumerations. These pages are currently being re- scanned for quality and will be posted as they become available. The 1790-1830 censuses have searchable indexes and are browsable. The 1840-1880 and 1900-1920 censuses are currently browsable with head of household indexes for them currently in production. http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/main.htm Also available is the one-of-a-kind 1890 federal census substitute. Fragments of this census that survived the 1921 fire are online with additional state and city directories to provide you with the best coverage available for this time period. More information about the 1890 federal census substitute is at: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/1890sub/main.htm The Census Images Online collection is invaluable for family historians who are researching their American roots. It enables Ancestry.com subscribers to view original census images from the comfort of home -- easily and effectively. THE FUNS OF THE PIONEERS ---------------------------- The creative genius and sharing spirit of so many who create Web sites hosted by RootsWeb are exemplified in the Merrick County, Nebraska pages. Under its "Online Resources" section one finds "The Funs of the Pioneers," as remembered by Frank McConnell. Here are tales about things other than the hardships and sad events the pioneers endured. They had fun, too. Don't miss "Bill and the Widow." It begins . . . "Wife," said Ed Wilbur one morning as he sat stirring his coffee with one hand and holding a plum cake on his knee with the other and looking across the table into the bright eyes of his neat little wife, "Wouldn't it be a good joke to get bachelor Bill Smiley to take Widow Watson to Barnum's show next week?" http://www.rootsweb.com/~nemerric/olres/funs/FOP.htm 1d. GOBBLE UP! For a special Thanksgiving story to share with your family discover "Mom and the Turkey." http://www.petuniapress.com/turkey3.htm 1e. PLANTATION REUNION By Raquel G&R Thiebes http://www.sturgisms.homestead.com I am a descendant of slaves from a plantation in Sturgis, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. Through oral tradition, I knew that it was the largest plantation in that corner of the county; that it was owned by a Davis and that the slaves and the plantation owner and his family were buried side-by-side in the family cemetery later known as Liberty Hill. When I first started researching my family tree six months ago, I started with the census records from that county, working backwards to fill in all the blanks and was able to go back quite a few generations. I had heard about RootsWeb and the message boards and decided to put in a search for the county and the surname Davis. To this day I will remember the post that popped up late that night, mentioning all the facts I grew up with. I was staring my family oral history in the face on the screen that night, mentioned by someone I didn't even know. I couldn't sleep that night, wondering if my response would get to the original poster, who was a descendant of the plantation owner and who had posted that message in 1999 -- almost two years before! The next morning she e-mailed me back right away and was just ecstatic! We have since worked together to trace this Thomas Davis, his family, and his slaves back through Pickens County, Alabama to Abbeville, South Carolina. We even traveled back to Sturgis and met each other in person. Thank you RootsWeb. Without your boards we would have NEVER found each other. ********** IT'S A SMALL, SMALL (VIRTUAL) WORLD By Sandra Ryan Granahan-Espinosa I have been searching for my GRANAHAN relatives for quite some time and have had considerable success thanks to RootsWeb. Two weeks ago, I received a letter from a family in El Centro, California, who were searching for family members with the surname ESPINOSA, which happens to be my maiden name. When the message boards appeared to them, it showed that I was searching for my GRANAHAN family and I signed it with both my maiden and married names, GRANAHAN-ESPINOSA. Well, it turns out that this family knows many other GRANAHANS in the tiny town of El Centro, which is on the Mexican border. They offered to contact them on my behalf, if we were related. We are indeed related -- they are my cousins. I have since been in contact with them and have exchanged photos, plus I have addresses for my cousin, Betty, with whom I lost touch. My grandparents, Matthew and Margaret (nee KELLAS) GRANAHAN are actually buried in a cemetery in the town next to El Centro. I am so thankful to RootsWeb for bringing me together with my family. I grew up without knowing any aunts, uncles or cousins, but it is never too late to discover family and become acquainted. I have one piece of advice: When posting messages to the message board, add everything that you can possibly think of, no matter how trivial you might think it is. The things that have paid off the most for me are the stories and rumors that I have heard in the past and included in my postings. 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- NEVER FORGET TO ASK By Len Chapel Quite a few years ago when I finally began the quest of my ancestral lineage it didn't take too long until I came to the proverbial dead-end on one of the lines when I discovered one of my ancestors had failed to tie the knot -- five times to be exact. Over the following years I often said to my grandfather, "Your great- grandmother had five children and was never married." His reply was always the same, "That is correct." Several years down the road, I was in a North Carolina courthouse when I located a certificate of death for my great-great-grandfather, and lo and behold, it listed the father. It also stated the information was provided by his son, my great-grandfather. Needless to say, I was overjoyed with what I KNEW was a link that had never before been located. A couple of months later I visited with my mother and my 90-year-old grandfather who was now in a nursing home. I was so proud of my discovery that my buttons were about to pop when I went through the same routine with him: "Grandpa, your great-grandmother had five children and was never married." He nodded his affirmation. I then said, "I know who your great- grandfather was -- he was Allen Fender." My grandfather merely said, "That is correct." I was flabbergasted. I said, "You knew that?" He said, "Sure I knew. When I was a child I was told to not marry any Fender girls as they were my cousins." I then asked Grandpa, "How come you never told me his name?" He said simply, "You never asked." P.S. Even given the warning, my research showed my grandfather, unbeknownst to him, had married his third cousin. ********** ROOTS, BUT NO BRANCHES By Sue Renkert The 1857 Washington Territory census for Sawamish County, now Mason County, enumerates 56 males (10 married, 32 single men, 14 single children) and 19 women (9 married, 10 single -- all children). Among these sobering statistics is the following enumeration: "Thomas Walker, age 35, occupation: Sawing logs, birthplace South Ireland [sic], Bachelor, Citizen, 'wants to be married!'" I was curious, as other readers probably are, whether his wish was fulfilled. Sadly, he is listed in the 1871 territorial census as age 55, a gardener, still single. He must have enjoyed the beautiful Pacific Northwest enough to remain there, alone. [Ed.'s note: Or perhaps there is a story behind the story?] ********** BRAKING FOR CEMETERIES By Carolyn Caplinger My husband is a dispatcher on the overnight shift for a sheriff's department in a neighboring county, so he is typically driving to work in the dark and leaving work just as the sun comes up. Many times, instead of taking the main highway to work, he will take an alternate route on a less-traveled highway. The other night we were at a friend's house who lives in the same county. We decided that, since we were closer to his work than home that we would take him to work and I'd pick him up in the morning. As usual he hits his typical alternate highway route to go to work. As he turns the corner to get on that highway I casually mention a cemetery at the corner. After picking him up the next morning, he takes the same route home and I notice another cemetery on the other side of the road about a mile from the one I saw the night before, but don't say anything. That evening he commented that he has driven that highway six months or more and has never noticed the cemetery at the corner of his turnoff. When I pointed out another one just a mile from the one at the corner, he was totally shocked that he had never noticed either one of them. Funny about the things that genealogists notice in our day-to-day life, such as a cemetery, that others probably never notice or think are important. 4.
