NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB -------------------------------- 1a. SSDI UPDATE WITH NEW "MIDDLE NAME/INITIAL" DATA. Due to the resolution of a mix-up at the supplier end with an Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com standing order, our Web sites are once again posting monthly updates to the Social Security Death Index after a brief interruption. The new SSDI update, current to September 2001, contains roughly 500,000 more entries than the version it replaces, bringing the grand total close to 66.7 million names. The new database is also notable in that it contains new fields: middle names and name suffixes. In fact, the new file contains middle name information on some 21 million people, almost one-third of the entire index. The vast majority of these entries are middle initials only. The benefit to genealogists is to see extra information about an ancestor that allows one to discriminate between two potential records. The updated data also contains name suffixes such as "JR" and "SR," which can be valuable in determining the identity of fathers or sons. Search the latest SSDI at: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi 1b. WILDCARD SEARCHING NOW AVAILABLE. After a successful test on the popular message boards, the company has expanded wildcard searching to all text on the site, in both free and subscription databases. Wildcards are special symbols, such as the asterisk (*) and the question mark (?), which are used in searching to represent some number of unknown letters in a word. Wildcards can be effective query tools if you're searching for words or names with alternate spellings, but don't wish to view all the extra hits that SOUNDEX searching creates. You can use wildcards to view all words that begin with the same stem. For example, a search for fran* will return hits on words like Fran, Franny, Frank, Frannie, and Frankie. Other helpful wildcard searching examples: --If you want to search for names that differ only by one letter, use the question mark wildcard. A search for "Johns?n" will return both Johnsen and Johnson. --You can search alternate spellings with the asterisk symbol, which represents 0 to 5 unknown characters. The query "Johann*" will search for Johann and Johannes. A query for "Smel*er" will search for Smeltzer and Smelzer, among others. Due to the nature and size of the data being searched and the need to deliver speedy search results, the use of wildcards is restricted to keywords and names that have at least the first three letters specified. 1c. UK/IRELAND DATA COLLECTION DEBUTS. To date, Ancestry.com's collection of genealogical databases has focused largely on U.S. records However, many users have requested genealogical records from around the globe. In response, Ancestry now offers a new data collection featuring high-quality and exclusive records from the United Kingdom and Ireland. With new records being added daily, the United Kingdom/Ireland subscription will grow constantly with birth, marriage, death, probate, immigration, and directory databases. WHAT UK/IRELAND DATA COLLECTION INCLUDES: --Parish and probate records with about 15 million names found in birth, marriage, death, probate, and burial records from historical parish registers in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland ranging in dates from 1538 to 1837. --Civil Registration Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes -- This collection of 14 million names includes an index that is searchable by name, record type, district and county. Eventually this index will include every registered birth, marriage, and death in England and Wales between 1837 and 1900. --Pallot Marriage and Baptism Index -- This exclusive 4-million name collection from England and Wales identifies the parish in which the marriage or baptism was celebrated, names of participants, and date of the event. The original image of the record is also available to UK/Ireland subscribers. --Irish Famine Index – An index of 600,000 names that catalogues the immigration of many Irish during the Potato Famine of 1846-51 compiled from passenger lists and other immigration documents. The UK/Ireland Collection is sold as a separate subscription for $69.95, billed annually for new customers. Subscriptions billed quarterly are $24.95. CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB ------------------------------- Thanks for sharing your stories. OLD FLAME FANS GENEALOGICAL FIRE. I had to share a success story I helped to create. I volunteer to do obit lookups and had a request from a gentleman in Australia for an obit in Santa Barbara, California for a Joseph DANIELI. The name was familiar to me because 40+ years ago I dated a boy with that surname. Often wondering what happened to the ex- boyfriend, I searched the Internet and found him still in California. After sharing some funny stories, he told me his sister had recently compiled a book on the Danieli family. I immediately called the sister and connected her with her relative in Australia. Neither one knew the other existed. Needless to say, I was on "cloud nine" all day. --Carell Jantzen 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- Jean Peterson writes that the Korean War Veterans National Museum and Library has opened in Tuscola (Douglas County) Illinois, about halfway between Effingham and Champaign-Urbana on I-57. Its purpose is to preserve a record of the participation of the U.S. in the Korean War . . . There is a Korean War veterans registry to help those looking for their buddies. It needs donations of artifacts; photos, books, documents, diaries, etc. It has an oral history project to tape the memoirs of the Korean War veterans. My sister and I stopped at the museum recently and found it interesting and would recommend it as a must see. If anyone knows of a Korean War veteran, please let them know about this worthwhile project. Right now it is located in the Outlet Mall just off the Interstate, with plans to build a 70,000-square-foot building. Its address is: Korean War Veterans National Museum and Library. 122 W. North Central / P.O. Box 16 Tuscola, IL 61953 4. NEW ROOTSWEB MAILING LISTS ----------------------------- (Editor's Note: The following are mailing lists not Web pages) ABOUT MAILING LISTS. HUMOR: CREATIVE NAMING --------------------------------------- Thanks to: Robert M. Henderson" <76572.2524@compuserve.com> Real life is often funnier than anything professional gag-writers can devise, e.g., the following bit I came across in an online forum while searching for information on my wife's several times great-grandfather: "I have a Francis Lindley, also spelled Frances, the son of John Lindley born about 1610 in England, died 1650 in Guilford, Connecticut. Francis born bet. 1630 and 1634 in Banfordsleeps, Whippany Kent, England." I spent many years in England and know the Kent area pretty well, but couldn't remember anything remotely resembling Banfordsleeps. A check in my friendly British gazetteer confirmed my suspicions -- no such place exists. I can usually work out the peculiarities of the American interpretation of British geography, such as an ancestor's birth in Clanstemwy, England (it's in Wales and is spelled Llanystumdwy, though the pronunciation would be fairly close) or assuming that the Ipswich in England is in Essex, like the one in Massachusetts. It isn't, it's in Suffolk, but this one really had me stumped until I was reading through a history of Morris County, New Jersey, some time later and this phrase fairly jumped out at me: "Deacon Abraham Kitchell, who was also one of the judiciary, died in 1741, aged 62, and with Joseph Lindsley, the son of Francis, who came from Branford, sleeps in 'God's acre,' in Whippany..." I guess somebody figured it was a quaint little village in Kent. 9.
