Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTSWEB HOME OFFICE by Jake Gehring, RootsWeb Executive Producer Another week of work on the message boards has gone by. I just wanted to send out a quick note to report progress on bug fixes and enhancements as well as clarify my copyright statements which appeared in my last message. --- Users can now filter messages by category (queries, deeds, Bible records, obituaries, etc.) to see only messages of a particular type. --- Advanced searches may now be performed within a particular board and this option has been set as the default when the "Advanced Search" link is clicked from within a board. --- Combining the board hierarchies from GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com has progressed quite a bit since launch and is nearing completion. We realize this part of the launch has caused some problems, so thanks for bearing with us as we get one structure for all those millions of messages! Regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards: RootsWeb states in its Acceptable Use Policy: "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The Terms & Conditions at Ancestry.com are the same on this point: "Portions of [Ancestry.com] will contain user provided content, to which you may contribute appropriate content. For this content, Ancestry is a distributor only." And again from the MyFamily.com, Inc. Internet Services Copyright Policy: "Content which has been contributed to public area of the MyFamily.com, Inc. sites by users remain the property of the submitter or the original creator and we are a licensed distributor of such content." I really hope to resolve any concerns here by stating that "if you posted it, you own it." Please feel free to read these legal documents yourselves for clarification: RootsWeb.com Acceptable Use Policy http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html Ancestry.com Terms and Conditions http://www.ancestry.com/legal/terms.htm MyFamily.com, Inc. Internet Services Copyright Policy http://www.myfamilyinc.com/about_us/copyright.htm That's it for this week. Please keep your input and comments coming so that we can continue to improve the message boards and make your research easier! * * * SOUTH AMERICAN GENWEB PROJECT. http://www.rootsweb.com/~sthamgw/ Nathan Zipfel, chairperson of the WorldGenWeb Project Advisory Board http://www.worldgenweb.org reports that they have "recently revised the entire region and now have Web sites online for all the countries [in South America] and links to various resources including message boards." Zipfel further reports that the SouthAmericanGenWeb Project is looking for coordinators for some countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Columbia, Chile, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname, and Uruguay when we checked a few days ago). If you are interested, please contact Nathan Zipfel at nate@gte.net or Charlotte Meyers at cmmeyer@caves.net . * * * ROOTSWEB IS INTERNATIONAL. That's not news, but you might not realize just how geographically far-flung we are. RootsWeb staff members are in Australia and all over the U.S.A. The millions who contribute to and use the lovely, free resources hosted by RootsWeb live in all corners of the third planet from the sun. Like the old British empire, the sun never sets on RootsWeb. A glance at the geographic distribution of the e-mail addresses on last week's ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS distribution list did not yield as much information as your editors had hoped because more than three-fourths of a million (approximately 80%) of those who received the e-zines last week have addresses that end with .com, .net, or .org , and so might be from anywhere. However, based on the e-mail addresses ending with a country code, we were able to see where about 20% of RWR/ML readers are located. Omitting the 80% with addresses that end with .com, .org, or .net, here is what we found (countries are listed in descending order by number of addresses as described above). U.S.A. 23,636; Australia (.au) 16,886; United Kingdom of Great Britain (.uk) 15,437; Canada (.ca) 13,974; New Zealand (.nz) 4,882; Germany (.de) 2,245; Kingdom of the Netherlands (.nl) 2,015; Kingdom of Norway (.no) 1,268; France (.fr) 1,142; South Africa (.za) 982; Brazil (.br) 844; Ireland (.ie) 533; Kingdom of Belgium (.be) 505; Denmark (.dk) 409; Columbia (.co) 402; Kingdom of Sweden (.se) 395; Argentina (.ar) 391; Kingdom of Spain (.es) 305; Austria (.at) 293; Italy (.it) 264; Poland (.pl) 244; Switzerland (.ch) 238; Cameroon (.cm) 221; Israel (.il) 192; Mexico (.mx) 188; Japan (.jp) 184; Oman (.om) 184; Niger (.ne) 176; Cocos (Keeling) Islands (.cc) 115; Finland (.fi) 114; Ethiopia (.et) 113; Neutral Zone (.nt) 112; Portugal (.pt) 107; Russian Federation (.ru) 103; Hungary (.hu) 72; Czech Republic (.cz) 67; Niue (.nu) 67; Chile (.cl) 64; Tonga (.to) 64; Singapore (.sg) 60; Greece (.gr) 58; Bermuda (.bm) 52; Dominican Republic (.do) 52; Luxembourg (.lu) 52; United Arab Emirates (.ae) 51; Lebanon (.lb) 48; Saudi Arabia (.sa) 39; Peru (.pe) 38; Uruguay (.uy) 38; Iceland (.is) 36; Philippines (.ph) 35; Malaysia (.my) 34; American Samoa (.as) 31; Costa Rica (.cr) 30; Slovak Republic (.sk) 30; Zimbabwe (.zw) 29; Korea (South) (.kr) 28; Kingdom of Thailand (.th) 28; Ukraine (.ua) 28; Venezuela (.ve) 27; Croatia (.hr) 26; Romania (.ro) 26; Indonesia (.id) 24; Samoa (.ws) 24; Cyprus (.cy) 23; Slovenia (.si) 23; Yugoslavia, also known as Serbia-Montenegro (.yu) 23; People's Republic of China (.cn) 20; Turks and Caicos Islands (.tc) 20; Turkey (.tr) 19; U.S. Virgin Islands (.vi) 19; Christmas Island (.cx) 18; India (.in) 18; Namibia (.na) 16; Estonia (.ee) 15; Bahamas (.bs) 14; Hong Kong (.hk) 14; Malta (.mt) 14; Paraguay (.py) 14; Tuvalu (.tv) 14; Montserrat (.ms) 13; Pakistan (.pk) 13; Armenia (.am) 12; Bulgaria (.bg) 12; Taiwan (.tw) 12; Brunei Darussalam (.bn) 11; Egypt (.eg) 11; Bahrain (.bh) 10; Guatemala (.gt) 10; Latvia (.lv) 10; Lithuania (.lt) 10; Antigua and Barbuda (.ag) 9; Papua New Guinea (.pg) 9; Sri Lanka (.lk) 9; Trinidad and Tobago (.tt) 9; Botswana (.bw) 8; Ecuador (.ec) 8; Micronesia (.fm) 8; Cayman Islands (.ky) 7; Gibraltar (.gi) 7; Liechtenstein (.li) 7; Nicaragua (.ni) 7; Bolivia (.bo) 6; Mauritius (.mu) 6; Moldova (.md) 6; Morocco (.ma) 6; Senegal (.sn) 6; U.S.S.R. Thanks for sharing your stories. ONE IS NOT ENOUGH by Conni Mitchell Braun CBraun675@aol.com A little over a year ago, while visiting my 91-year-old grandmother, I learned that my grandfather had been married before he married her and had a son from that marriage. Grandma did not remember much but thought the woman's name was Mona and that they lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. When I returned home I posted an inquiry on the Michigan mailing list trying to locate my "missing" uncle. The responses were not encouraging. Everyone told me that I did not have enough information to locate him. Right before Christmas last year I learned of a MITCHELL surname list and decided to post another inquiry. I posted my message on Saturday afternoon. When I checked my e-mail on Sunday morning, there was a response from a man in Chicago, Illinois, who was looking for his great-grandfather. I was careful not to supply too much information, but asked some very pointed questions. Some of the information he had matched information about my grandfather but most of it was not quite right. Still we decided that we were cousins. He and his three brothers knew very little about their paternal grandfather. My new cousin shared the information I had provided with his brothers and soon the five of us were exchanging information. I became the "expert" although I knew only a little more myself. Upon opening one e-mail that was a picture of their grandmother as a young woman, I shouted out loud. I recognized the woman but thought she was my grandfather's sister because they had the same name. It was confirmation of our family ties. Since then, I have met one of my cousins and I hope eventually to meet all four. I decided that since I had such luck with locating this missing uncle I would try to locate additional information about my MITCHELL family. Armed only with information gleaned from my great-great-grandmother's obituary and great-great-grandfather's death certificate, I began searching for my MITCHELL ancestors in Tennessee. I only had the name of a town but no county. [See RootsWeb's U.S. Town/County Locator at http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi .] With help from the wonderful listers I was able to pinpoint two counties that had towns of the name I was searching. Eventually, I was able to determine that my family came from Grainger County, Tennessee. Once I got on the county mailing list, information about my ancestors started arriving. This was just too easy! I am now in contact with seven or eight individuals who are all researching different branches of the same family. We can trace our family back to William MITCHELL, who was born in 1764 in Pennsylvania, fought in the Revolutionary War, and was one of the founding families of the state of Tennessee. Again all this is from the help of the wonderful listers. Thank you, RootsWeb, for your wonderful surname lists, for now I have met more family members than I thought possible. * * * * * MAILING LISTS. I want to thank you RootsWeb and Ancestry for your combined message boards. Thanks to you in the last week I have encountered cousins from two different lines. I live in a rural area and don't have the opportunity to travel for research. Thank you again for reuniting branches of my family. Linda Williamson Rainey linderellar@yahoo.com Just wanted to let you know that in the most recent issue of ROOTSWEB REVIEW (Volume 4, No. 27) I found a link to one of my family branch lines. I used the site to verify some of the information I had been given by the matriarch of one particular family. She had given only nicknames for my records. The link provided full and proper names which I could record as well as the married names for a few of the granddaughters. Now I'll be able to locate these cousins for our family reunion next summer. Thanks to the staff at RootsWeb for providing information to others so cousins or individuals searching the same families can join effort in finding their family members. Debbi Geer dgirth@yahoo.com I would like to tell you how much I enjoy and look forward to this program. I especially love to read the personal stories of those who have been successful in locating the data on ancestors and then personally meeting family for the first time or who have been lost to them for years. I am a senior companion at an adult foster care home and worked with one of the ladies whose three children were adopted out more than 50 years ago. She was 81 years old last year when she and her 56-year-old daughter had a reunion. We still haven't found her two sons. I have found out how hard it is to find adopted children even after they are grown. . . it takes a lot of postage and patience but the results are worth it. [See: RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees, Guide 31: Adoption and Orphan Records at http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/lesson31.htm ] In 1992 we found a half sister of my children by sending postcards to people with the maiden name of the mother. One of the cards reached an aunt who contacted the mother, who then called her daughter 150 miles away. Within a week we had a reunion. Words cannot express the joy of that reunion when she met her father and four half sisters. She was then 43 years old and had been wanting to find her father since she was 13. She is like my own daughter now. We keep in close contact and she has bonded beautifully with the family. Sadly my husband passed away in l996, but not before they got to know each other. Now we are building memories. Thank you so very much for the deep interest and time you contribute to this program. Johanna Van Asperen johannavanasperen@juno.com [I posted a] simple question to Ancestry.com re my great- grandfather, Vincent TORRAS, who was a printer by trade and was in London in l842. [I received a] surprise reply from a doctoral researcher at the University of South Hampton, England, with additional information on his involvement with the Utopian community called the Concordium or Alcott House in the l840s. It seems that this V. TORRAS was my great-great-grandfather. He was from Spain and eventually came to San Francisco in l852 and continued the printing business there as late as l890.
