Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. The messages have really been flying. In an effort to improve communication from RootsWeb to you (and vice versa), I will be sending out a message every so often which addresses current issues on the RootsWeb site. The RootsWeb staff has received lots of questions since the merger of Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com last summer, and I think there's a general need for our users to have regular information on RootsWeb's efforts to provide valuable services to the genealogical community. I also want to make a few comments about our new message boards system which was launched last week. We're grateful for the excellent feedback many of you have provided. The feedback has been generally positive when addressing the value of the combined datasets and the increased search functionality. However, I also recognize that any significant change requires some getting used to and may create some temporary inconvenience and frustration. I would like to address some of the concerns we've heard from you, the users. By popular request, we will shortly add the ability for users to filter by message category within a message board (for queries, obituaries, deeds, etc.). For the benefit of the message board administrators, we are extending the board re-adoption deadline from July 15 to July 23. There is some confusion about RootsWeb's position regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards. Let me clarify by excerpting from the Acceptable Use Policy, which reads, "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it. As far as the message boards or any other RootsWeb features are concerned, if you're not happy, we're not happy. Please continue to give us your comments and concerns at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi or at [TWO-LINE URL] http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=RootsWeb-20- Topics-20-and-20-Localities.AdminCenter.suggestions In the meanwhile, experiment with the newly merged message boards. You might discover some previously buried information or make an invaluable connection that will enable you to leap over a proverbial genealogical brick wall problem that you had almost given up on solving. * * * * * POSTCARDS FROM ROOTSWEB. Thanks for sharing your stories. FARMER'S FIELD RED HERRING by Mary Harris harrispl@idirect.com I have just read the story of the gal who found the pioneer cemetery in Alabama. I, too, found an old cemetery, thanks to my mother, in a farmer's field. It is so very exciting. However, I am not writing to you about that. I am writing to thank you for your Web site. I used RootsWeb a couple of weeks ago for the first time. I ended up on an Ontario, Canada site, and it requested that you type in the name of your ancestor, which I did. I chose the one with a name that is not very common to see how this works -- CHIPCHASE. I found a message posted for someone looking for CHIPCHASE people from Toronto and Guelph. Bingo! My ancestors are from Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The long and short of it is I have met a lady from Michigan, who is the great-granddaughter of Caroline CHIPCHASE. Her great-grandmother and my grandmother were sisters. My brother had a letter in the family file from an aunt Kit in Michigan. It was written in February 1920. We never knew who aunt Kit was. We have the address, etc., and it was sent to my father. Aunt Kit and Caroline CHIPCHASE are one and the same. We have a letter written by her great-grandmother to our father. She, sadly, died in November of 1920 at the age of 34, leaving behind three daughters. In the letter she is discussing the influenza outbreak of 1920. It mentions her daughter Edith, who is the grandmother of our contact. You can imagine how we felt. There is a lot more to this story, however. One Saturday, I opened my e-mail from Cindy and there was a picture of my father, taken in 1918, that her great-grandmother had kept. It was so eerie. She wanted an explanation regarding this picture. On the back of the picture it said "Polly's eldest." She wondered who Polly was. My grandmother's name was Mary, but her nickname was Polly. Now Cindy had some pieces of the puzzle as well. After much e-mailing back and forth, I gave her some missing information and she gave me some. I didn't know that my grandmother had a middle name. Of course, she did. I don't even know if my father knew it was Ellen. She died very young from tuberculosis and I have been to the grave. Anyhow, two days ago Cindy sent me a GEDCOM . . . and there was my CHIPCHASE family tree dating back to the late 1700s. Thank you, RootsWeb. I will continue to use this site and am looking for many more members of the family. What a great site. What luck! * * * * * MAILING LISTS. Please send letters and all submissions as plain text e-mail messages (no attachments or html) to rwr-editors@rootsweb.com . Before Christmas 2000, I posted a query on the Iowa board looking for the residence of my great-grandparents. Through the board, I was contacted by Mr. Adrian AITCHISON of Cascade, Iowa. He not only found the house my great-great-grandparents lived in but also furnished me with a lot of family information on relatives I didn't know about. He also sent copies of my great-great-grandparents' obituaries, which contained more information on their ancestry. Also, due to the fact that he maintained the cemetery and funeral home sites for that area, I was able to find graves -- and the names of three of my great- great-grandparents' children, who died very young. Mr. Aitchison passed away 12 June 2001, but I will always be grateful that he went the extra mile and gave me my family. God bless him. And thanks to RootsWeb for giving us a way to connect with such wonderful people. Judy Herber ptherb@aol.com Having read about finding old Ordnance Survey maps in yesterday's newsletter ["Locating Locations in the United Kingdom," by Denis Galvin, in RWR 4:25, 20 June 2001], I was excited to find a further source at a Flower Show at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire today. Mapped Out have an archive of more than 20,000 large-scale maps dating from 1819 to 1945. I told them about RootsWeb and how wonderful it is, and they are keen to be of assistance. They have a Web site at http://www.allmappedout.com/ ; e-mail to sales@allmappedout.com Thanks for such interesting newsletters. I look forward to their arrival every week. Katharine Broome katharine@kbroome.fsnet.co.uk [Re "The World's Easiest Quiz," Humor, RWR 6:25] I really liked the quiz. But Actinidia chinensis (Chinese gooseberry) really is from China. Perhaps the question is meant to be "where do Kiwi fruit come from?" New Zealand growers did a really good horticultural and marketing job selecting for good varieties and then calling it Kiwi fruit. Other major areas of production of Kiwi fruit are Italy, Israel, and Chile (that I know of). Warrick Nelson, Christchurch, NZ wr.nelson@xtra.co.nz I liked your tongue in cheek, easiest answer quiz, but the answer to question 6 would not be what you suggest. I live in the Canary Islands, which are in the Atlantic, not the Pacific [That was in the answer. Eds.] and the birds are named after the island not vice versa. The Canary Islands were supposedly named by the Romans after the wild dogs living there. The Latin for dog is Canis. Gordon Keith Hazell, in sunny Tenerife gkhazell@teleline.es My sincere thanks and appreciation to RootsWeb and to contributor Richard BEITLER for posting the M.R.E. Cemetery records of Adams County, Indiana. I have just found valuable information on my REICHERT ancestors as well as associated families. What a gift! http://userdb.rootsweb.com/cemeteries/ Dorothy Colwell paws@nqi.net I sent you a letter earlier asking if you could help me . . . I put a request onto the Northants mailing list at RootsWeb http://lists.rootsweb.com/ and have been inundated with kindness by fellow list members who have given me the information I required. Just to put the icing on the cake [the person I was looking for] saw my request and replied to me too. Crisis over. Family historians are simply the nicest people. Dawn Tebbutt dawn.tebbutt@ntlworld.com Volunteer at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness http://raogk.rootsweb.com/ Thank you, thank you, for so much fun "stuff" to read. Eve Hamilton Evil0001@aol.com [I posted a] simple question re my great-grandfather Vincent TORRAS, who was a printer by trade and was in London in l842, to one of Ancestry.com's areas (I am new to computers and so can't remember where). I received a surprise reply with additional information on his involvement with the Utopian community called the Concordium or Alcott House in the l840s from a doctoral researcher at the University of South Hampton, England. It seems that this V. TORRAS was my great-great-grandfather. He was from Spain and in 1852 immigrated to San Francisco, California, where he continued the printing business as late as l890. Thanks to all for Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. R. Janes rjanes@gci.net I wanted to thank-you for your service. I have been trying for years to find my family on both sides to no avail. I got a new computer so I could go online and within a few days I was getting mail from cousins on the CHAMPLIN side. I can now go back to the 1500s and have a new family all over the world. I was at a brick wall about the other side of my family, the BLOCKs from Germany. I have new family on that side, too. But, I can't get information in Germany. [See RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/ , especially Guide 26 "Germanic Ancestors" http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/lesson26.htm ] I love my new family and hope someday to meet them. Thank you again for your help. Joyce nanam@kinzua.net * * * * * HUMOR. Thanks to Doc Schneider, RootsWeb System Administrator and all-around guru. A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, "How many women can a man marry?" "Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he knew the answer so quickly. "How do you know that?" "Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the Bishop said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer." * * * * * ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS do not publish queries and the editors regret that they are unable to provide research assistance.
