Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * BURIED TREASURE AT ROOTSWEB. While we are on the subject, you may be sure that computer viruses are not going away, so get your head out of the cyber sand and learn about them. Keep yourself informed so that you can protect your computer and precious data from viruses, worms, and the oafish nitwits who perpetrate them. o Get and use anti-virus software and, most importantly, keep it updated. An out-of-date application offers no protection against new viruses and worms that hit the Internet every day. o Do not open files that have double extensions. Example: fooledyou.txt.vbs o Beware of unexpected e-mail with attachments, even if it comes from a friend or other trusted source. o Any executable file has the potential of harboring a virus. If you do not know what files are executable, check the alphabetical listing of known infected attachment names, which are cross-referenced with their corresponding virus name at the Infected Attachment Center: http://antivirus.about.com/compute/antivirus/library/ attachments/blenext.htm [TWO-LINE URL] o Windows users should make sure that file extension viewing is enabled. In Windows 95/98/NT, open Windows Explorer, then: Click View | Options | View and uncheck the box for "Hide file extensions for known file types." In Windows 2000, this setting is found under: Tools | Folder Options | View or Tools | Folder Options | File Types, locate the file type(s) desired and choose Advanced. Then check the box "Always Show Extension." * * * POSTCARDS AT ROOTSWEB. Thanks for sharing your stories. LETTERS FROM THE FRONT by Roxanne Parks Garrett garretts2@webtv.net Almost three years ago, I posted a message on RootsWeb's PARKS board that I was looking for living relatives because my parents had divorced in 1965 and I saw little of any cousins for several years. My mom died when I was only 30 and my dad remarried, so I really figured all family material would be gone. About four months ago, I received a letter from a cousin, who had in her possession most of the letters that my father wrote home to his family from the front lines during WWII. He had sent a whole box of information intended for me after his demise, but it had not reached me as I never stayed for long in any one place. When the cousin saw my name on the PARKS board, she knew she had the right woman. I am eternally grateful that her great- grandmother, who was my aunt, saved all that material. Now I am doing the same for them by copying all the family pictures I have for them. I now know my dad won two Bronze Stars in WWII and I plan to put them in a shadow box as my husband has done with his medals from the Vietnam War. I am busy preserving the family photos and letters as I want them to go to my son and his three daughters. The photos were saved by my husband, who picked through a wall of mud eight feet high to retrieve my cedar chest, which held all my family pictures and was about the only thing we saved from a huge flood that ripped through Reno, Nevada. My cedar chest was lovingly restored and all my pictures were gently pulled apart and cleaned for me. We hardly lost any as they were compressed in the wooden box -- just another sign that genealogists are followed by angels. * * * PASSING IT ON by Kris Fetter geep70@bright.net For about a month my "genealogy well" had been dry -- no e-mails from long-lost cousins, no sudden letters in the mail, and no time to go to the library. Then I got an e-mail from a cousin I had not known about, Marilyn Buxton from Idaho. The name didn't ring any bells until I opened the message and learned that she descends from the same John DEAL family of Livingston County, New York and Kalamazoo, Michigan that I grew up hearing stories about. I happily wrote back and we compared notes and I learned that she had a copy of the Civil War diary of my Simon DEAL, about which I had heard but I had never seen. John DEAL was born Johannes DIEHL in Pennsylvania, and had moved his family to New York in the 1800s. From two marriages he had 16 children. His son, Simon F. Deal (1836-1864, married to Eliza Ann BECKWITH), was a simple farmer living near Avon, New York when he started this diary. From the time just before he enlisted in Co. M, 8th Reg't, New York Heavy Artillery Volunteers to the time of his death in Richmond, Virginia, after being shot and taken captive by the Rebel army, was only six months, but the reader gets a sense of what it was like -- like his entry, "If I stay away from the doctors, I'll likely live." I was so excited, and read it through several times. My 11-year- old daughter Sarah came home from school that day, and I told her about it and read a couple of the funny parts. Her usual reaction is the rolling of eyes when mom goes on (and on) about genealogy, but the next morning she asked me if she could take the diary to school. They are studying the Civil War and she thought her teacher and class would like to see it. This is what genealogy is all about -- passing it on. Thanks to RootsWeb and Marilyn, my long-lost cousin. * * * * * MAILING LISTS. Recently, my computer was upgraded. My son added more speed and all my family data was erased. That was OK since I thought I had a back-up on two diskettes. However, when I tried to retrieve them, all the information was gone. I want to thank RootsWeb for the ability to download my file from your site [http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ] It certainly was wonderful to be able to access my family file again without a problem. Thank you for this and also for your wonderful site. It has helped me in so many ways in my genealogical research. Martha Muessig Kafjd605@aol.com I had wound up this afternoon [15 May] with a list of about 30 U.S. cities or towns needing counties. I dreaded using the atlas or when that is too unreadable, calling the city library. I let it go and decided to finish reading my e-mail. I was scrolling through MISSING LINKS [ML 6:20] and what did I find? Your mention of the RootsWeb site for county names [U.S. Town and County Locator http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi In less than 15 minutes I had them all jotted down on a sheet of paper. Now to use "Find and replace" in my genealogy program and I will be in business. Pat Smith Patriciassmith1@cs.com Early last spring, I received e-mail from a kind lady named Carol, who had found my address in a BANEGAS query I had posted at RootsWeb. She said that after her grandmother's death, the family had found an old portrait on which was written "D. T. BANEGAS family, 20 Aug 1925." Carol and her family were trying to reunite the portrait with descendants of this unknown family. I was excited at the prospect of locating a family treasure and scouted around our family trying without success to find someone who recognized the subjects in the portrait. Carol's family was kind enough to send me the original portrait and I am happy to report that the connection has been made. I publish a family newsletter for this branch of my family and, following publication of the latest issue, I heard from descendants of a branch with which we had lost contact: the Dionicio Tells BANEGAS family. I promptly e-mailed the photo to these newly-found cousins to see if anyone might recognize it. The family historian for Dionicio's branch, Rosalie Banegas Maese, wrote me via her daughter Patsy Maese Olivas to confirm that this portrait was indeed of Dionicio's family. She also kindly included identification of every one of the 18 family members in the portrait. Thank you, RootsWeb, for the part you played in this delightful "reunion." Not only was Carol able to locate me with a little help from your boards, but also she posted a message about the found heirloom in "Somebody's Links," which I receive via e-mail. And, if that isn't enough, I also subscribe to the PML (personalized mailing list) and receive copies of all new posts throughout all of RootsWeb anytime the BANEGAS surname appears. The deck was stacked in my favor, thanks to RootsWeb and your outstanding resources. Cindy Fahrbach nuestrafamiliabanegas@hotmail.com * * * * * HUMOR. Thanks to Brenda Webster-Demers d.demers@worldnet.att.net Memorial Day reminds me of my son while he was in kindergarten (he is 28 now and in the Navy). I could tell he was excited about something as he rushed to the car after school. "Mom I learned a new song today!", so I asked him what the song was he had learned. He replied "The National Antlers!" * * * * * ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS do not publish queries and the editors regret that they are unable to provide research assistance.
