Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? I am wondering why the links don't work in these e-mails you send me. I love these MISSING LINKS e-mails. I sure wish I could open up the links though. A. There can be many reasons why URLs (Internet addresses) don't work as links in an e-mail. Sometimes they get carried over to another line if the address is long and that breaks the link. Some e-mail programs are non-standard (like AOL and CompuServe) and those do not display URLs as hyperlinks (clickable links). There might be a setting in your browser that causes a URL not to work as a link because the browser automatically inserts "http://" or adds "www" to a URL. If the link already includes that part of the address then the link will not work. The links are tested before they are published and the URLs are accurate. Therefore, if the link does not work, you should be able to copy and paste the URLs into your browser window and access the pages that way. * * * SHAKING YOUR FAMILY TREE (SYFT) by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG. Identifying and learning more than bare facts about female ancestors is a challenge because until recent times women conducted few legal or business transactions and thus do not appear in the records where we find our forefathers. UNLOCKING THE PAST by Jane Doherty, Australia dohertyj@optusnet.com.au I have researched for several years our British and Australian lines quite successfully, but the Dutch line was a complete brick wall. I searched everywhere for my grandmother's maiden name. Last week the unbelievable happened. My daughter and I were sitting here looking at different things when once again I typed in PLUKKER. Imagine my surprise when it actually showed me a response. I looked at the names and thought one of them looked a little familiar and I went to the link. The yell could be heard kilometres away when up on to the screen came an almost unreadable Dutch name that I knew was my great-grandmother. I found several generations all with in-laws and children and their marriages and in-laws, etc. I exchanged e-mail with an extremely distant cousin who lives in Salt Lake City. I am still grinning, a week later. My 80-year-old mother has been on holiday and so hasn't had a chance to look yet, but she is very excited. My next task is to find her father, Johannes Gijsbertus t'HART, who embezzled a large amount of money and disappeared when she was age two. An impossible task? I don't know anymore; I'll just keep looking! Thank you, RootsWeb, for unlocking so much of the past for one who lives so far away. * * * RELOCATING GREAT-GRANDFATHER by Pat Jones Smith MSmith3030@aol.com I have been searching for the gravesite of my great-grandfather, Francis JONES, off and on for the past year. Since he was buried in Georgia and I live in Missouri, it was not an easy task. I contacted the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION newspaper and obtained a copy of his obituary. It stated that he died on 10 October 1917 in Lithonia, Georgia and was buried on 11 October in the Lithonia Cemetery. This was true. I have a photo of the gravesite on the day of burial. There is no headstone yet. As I was doing research on Francis, a family member told me a story that would upset everything. Shortly after his death, his widow, Mary Ann Barbara WEIDINGER JONES, took their five children and moved to California. A sixth child had died at age two. Before his widow left for California, she had Francis JONES moved to a mausoleum. Now, being the beginner that I am, I assumed (never do that) he was in the same cemetery where he was originally buried. This was not the case, and the search was on. I quizzed the family as to what had happened to Francis. No one seemed to know. I looked at the photo of the gravesite and noticed a Knights of Columbus banner across the grave. So, I contacted the Knights of Columbus in Georgia and they were as helpful as they could be, but they could not tell me anything useful as the where he had been moved. I then tried to find some information from the Lithonia, DeKalb County Historical Society, but there was no help there either. I was beginning to think he had been beamed up by aliens. Then I posted notices on several different mailing lists. I started with the GA-Cemetery list and then went to the HEADHUNTERS list and the JONES-L@rootsweb.com list. There were no responses for quite some time. I had even tried to find out from the "new" relatives I had found in Wales (where Francis JONES was born). Nothing. Finally, one day a post came in from Cindy Hays in Tucker, Georgia, which is near Atlanta. She offered her help in looking for Francis. Cindy took on the search for Francis as if he was her own great- grandfather. After going to the Lithonia Cemetery and taking photos of the graves of many of my other relatives there, she found no Francis. I sent all of the information I had on him and she went to work. Since Francis and Mary Ann had been married in Atlanta at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Church, she started there. They told her the information she needed had been sent to the Catholic Archives. Instead of going there, Cindy went to the Georgia State Archives. Bingo! Pay dirt. She found the cemetery records, obituary extract, and what passed for a death certificate back then. Francis and Marsaline (the child who had died) were buried at what was then called Crown Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum. It is now known as Crestlawn Cemetery. Cindy made copies of the cemetery records and took photos of the mausoleum for me. She has sent me the records and I am awaiting the arrival of the photos. I can hardly wait. The strange thing is that Francis and his baby daughter are buried in the same cemetery as Cindy's baby brother. Some may call it coincidence, but I call it fate. Somehow we were meant to connect and I am very grateful to Cindy and her husband for finding my great-grandfather. Thank you Cindy. There are always people who are willing to help. Never give up. * * * * * MAILING LISTS. For an index to the more than 21,000 RootsWeb- hosted genealogy mailing lists, visit http://lists.rootsweb.com/ NEW MAILING LIST REQUESTS. Thanks to RootsWeb, I found my children after looking for them for about 20 years. I talked to my daughter from Houston, Texas tonight. We all hope to have a reunion soon. Thank God and RootsWeb. Norman W. Cope nwcope@surfsouth.com Thank you so much for my first issue. I just love it! I am really going to enjoy every issue. I just learned my real name last Friday and am delirious, seeking my "blood!" Dad was adopted so I never knew his family, nor did he. Anyhow, I really do appreciate all you folks who have worked so hard for so many years to help all of us novices. P.S. Can you suggest any SCHREUER links? FoxyInSLC@aol.com May I make a request to all contributors? As we all know, building a family tree is an international task -- especially when you start chasing origins to and from different countries for settlement elsewhere. As an Australian resident, I am finding a lot of American contributors abbreviate their state, which is o.k. for Americans, but for the rest of us, leaves us a little in the dark about locations in your country. Can we all keep in mind when loading information for others to share, how world-wide building the family tree really is? Apart from that little gripe, I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who does contribute to RootsWeb for sharing their work and stories. I would like to send one hint to all researchers. While at the library in Belleville, Illinois, I came across a shelf of high school yearbooks from 1917 to the present. Someone was gracious enough to donate these books, and in each of them I found some of the family for which I was there searching. . . So, don't skip the school year books. Thanks to Carol Carola9@prodigy.net My grandma was a member of a group called PAWS, which is an animal rescue group in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Their poster dog was "Mr. Butch." Uncle Johnny was on his way over to see Grandma, and as he was driving down the off-ramp of the freeway, there stood a dog. He had to stop to keep from hitting it, so he opened the car door and said "come on, boy." The dog jumped in. They never found the owner, so Grandma kept him. Grandma entered "Mr. Butch" in the various contests and he always won. It finally got to the point where he couldn't enter the "dog with the waggingest tail" category because he always won. Then they barred him from the "ugliest dog" category because he always won that too. In the "dog with the oldest owner" category they won it the first year because Grandma was 90. The next year she was 91 and they won again. The third year the contest officials told her they'd let her win that time, but the next year she was going to have to bring a birth certificate. She did. At that point, yes she was 93, but they got her on a technicality. She had a delayed birth certificate that made her 20 years younger then her oldest child, but "Mr. Butch" got special mention. * * * * * ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS do not publish queries and the editors regret that they are unable to provide research assistance.
