Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * WORLDCONNECT. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ Q. Why can't I find my ancestors when I search WorldConnect? A. WorldConnect is a fast growing collection of user-submitted family trees that now contains more than 54 million names. From WorldConnect you can also search more than 77 million names in the Ancestry World Tree. If you don't find your ancestors in a search, try increasing the possibilities by looking for a surname only and by enabling a Soundex or Metaphone search where possible. If you still come up empty-handed, consider creating a GEDCOM of your own and submitting a family tree to WorldConnect. Nothing encourages others to submit their own family genealogy as much as finding a related file already online. To learn more about successful searching, see http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcsearch1.html See also RootsWeb Guide 3: Software and GEDCOMs http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm * * * GREMLINS CAVORT AT ROOTSWEB: Mailing List Server Succumbs. Some of you will have noticed a major reduction in the amount of e-mail you received from RootsWeb-hosted mailing lists from Saturday through Monday, 13-15 January. Then you might have received a large e-mail delivery on Tuesday, 14 January. Over the weekend, one of RootsWeb's mailing list servers had a nervous breakdown, with the result that the server had to be rebuilt, software reinstalled, and the lists data replaced by the system administrators and lists staff. This was accomplished in less than three days -- a Herculean effort by a handful of heroes. Now we hope they can get some well-deserved sleep. * * * FreeBMD UPDATE. http://FreeBMD.RootsWeb.com/ (FreeBMD is transcribing the birth, marriage and death indexes of England and Wales 1837-1900 and placing the searchable database on the Web for free access.) In September 2000, FreeBMD announced that it had reached the three million records mark. Co-founder, Camilla Gemmingen von Massenbach, reports that the current database update contains more than five and one-half million records. "This works out to more than 20,000 records per day on average since September, more than one every five seconds. Recently, an amazing 40,000 records have been reaching FreeBMD every day. Every expectation and target is broken." Von Massenbach continued, "Enthusiastic volunteers have supported us and enabled FreeBMD to grow and accommodate our ever-growing force of transcribers. The Web site has been reorganized; the syndicate organizers have been provided with extra support and advice; the transcribers with an indispensable and authoritative Knowledge Base; new (and old but maybe less seasoned) transcribers with personalized help and troubleshooting; database support functions have been programmed and improved; information and background to the registration districts incorporated; massive amounts of scanning, printing and distributing of records has occurred; circulars have been written and sent out across the mailing list universe; and lastly, but most importantly, volunteers have worked for half an hour or more per week transcribing and uploading their efforts to FreeBMD at RootsWeb. "Finally, two of our volunteers, Roy Jennion and John Pain have managed to secure a complete set of film, all events, 1837-1900. Ancestry kindly sponsored its purchase. All we need to do now is figure out how to scan all that stuff as quickly as you are transcribing it! "If you know someone who can spare half an hour a week and some finger power, please point them to http://FreeBMD.RootsWeb.com "We only have another 95 million odd records to go." * * * ISTG SAILS ON by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild http://istg.rootsweb.com/bremenproject.html and Die Maus (the mouse) Genealogical Society of Bremen (Germany) http://www.genealogy.net/gene/vereine/maus/computertag/ have combined efforts to bring researchers more transcribed manifests for vessels departing from Bremen and Bremerhaven, Germany. Currently the earliest listed is 1826 for Bremen and 1846 for Bremerhaven with latest dates being 1952. Listed by year and thereunder by name of the ship and date of sailing, these vessels sailed to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Bedford, Massachusetts, New Orleans and other ports. "The Compass" -- ISTG's outstanding guide to help you find information about ships, lists, immigration and naturalization records, has been updated. Check it out and go sailing -- virtually. http://istg.rootsweb.com/newcompass/pcindex.html Another new feature at ISTG is a series of "Maritime Newspaper Articles," generously provided by Barbara Andresen. These articles are primarily from the ROMAN CITIZEN newspaper of Rome (Oneida County) New York. However, they contain worldwide shipping news that genealogists will find fascinating. Here is a sampling of the treasures to be found at: http://istg.rootsweb.com/newsarticles.html 21 December 1849. "The steamer California arrived at Panama on the 23d of November, bringing two hundred and fifty-eight passengers, and more than one million of dollars value in gold; of the passengers the Crescent City brought one hundred and sixty, and gold to the amount of one million of dollars, including that belonging to the passengers." 11 July 1849. "Emigration from the United Kingdom in 1848. The total number of persons who emigrated from the United Kingdom in the past year was 248,089, viz: 144,576 males and 103,513 females. Of these, 12,358 were cabin passengers, and 235,731 steerage. 176,883 were from England, 59,701 from Ireland, and 11,505 from Scotland. The destination of the emigrants were as follows: 188,233 the United States, 866 to South America, 55,582 to the North American colonies, 4,316 to Canada, 33 to Vancouver's Island, 855 to the West Indies, 1,180 to the East Indies, 1,145 to the Cape of Good Hope, and 54,000 to the Australian colonies. The greatest number of emigrants embarked from the ports of Liverpool, London, Belfast and Dublin." From ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, dated April 25, 1885. "Wanted, Respectable Young Women, as DOMESTIC SERVANTS, to proceed to NEW SOUTH WALES. Passages, including Provisions, Bedding, &c., will be granted by the Agent-General in first-class steamers to approved applicants, upon payment of o2 each. An experienced Surgeon and Matron accompany each ship. Single females are quickly engaged at good wages on their arrival in Sydney, but, if desired the Government will provide them with free accommodation for ten days. Further information may be obtained at the EMIGRATION DEPARTMENT, New South Wales Government Offices, 5, Westminster Chambers, Victoria Street, Westminster, N.S.W." Thanks for sharing your stories. A WONDERFUL PRESENT by Bertie Winn Campbell bertie@pinn.net I answered a posting from someone in Virginia with family ties to my line. The recipient was delighted and wanted to pay me for my research and the copies I furnished. She sent me her address and I responded via e-mail telling her it was going to cost her big time because I couldn't trace my great-grandfather but his brother had lived in the town in which she is now residing. She went to the historical society and came up empty-handed except for a little blurb in the newspaper that mentioned the death of my great-granduncle's son-in-law. That was of no interest to me, I thought, but when I requested a copy of his death certificate, it showed he was buried in Bordentown, New Jersey. When I requested information from the cemetery, I learned that my great-granduncle, his wife, daughter, and son-in-law were all buried there. I tracked the uncle in the census and since he was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the l920 census, and I now had a burial date, I requested a death certificate. When it arrived, it furnished the names of his mother and father, so I now have the names of my great-great-grandparents. What a wonderful Christmas present. [A nifty bit of sleuthing, too. Eds.] NOT ALONE by Jean Ohlmann Rima bob-jean@nctc.net Recently I received e-mail from a third cousin, who had found my surname, the same as that of her late mother-in-law, on a message board at RootsWeb. Her husband didn't know of any relatives so she was happy to learn there were more. I have quite a bit of information but the first thing I told her was not to worry -- her mother-in-law was a first cousin to my father, who had 72 first cousins. I am finding more OHLMANNs all the time with whom so far we haven't made connections. * * * * * MAILING LISTS.
