However, I hadn't had much luck at Ancestry until one day a few months ago. I inherited a family-data disk from my grandfather, which I uploaded into my PAF file, and enjoyed showing my mom as it contains some information about her father's ancestry. Grandfather never spoke very much of his ancestry or family -- they had all long since passed away. Except for my mother's cousins, Barry and Phillip ROGERSON, sons of Phillip and Dorothy (JACOBS) ROGERSON, we were the last of his family on both sides. I was on Ancestry, which I had linked to through RootsWeb, and searched for some miscellaneous names, finding a few little things. I had an impulse to look for my great-great-grandmother, Hattie Emma GREER. I searched for the name and found what looked like a match -- Hattie Emma GREER born in Wareham, Massachusetts to Charles K. and Hattie Amelia (MORSE) GREER. But the dates and places were not the same as those I had. I had her as being born in Connecticut and dying in New York. Also, this Hattie Emma GREER did not have a husband listed or a death date. There was only a birth date, which did not match that of my great-great- grandmother. "Back to square one," I thought. I began interviewing my mother and aunt, who are the last JACOBS left in my family. I often say that we're having a JACOBS family reunion when my aunt comes to visit. From her I began to learn about some of our ancestral stories. There wasn't much to go on, but I wrote everything down that they said. Hattie Emma GREER ("Toot") married Wyman Dean JACOBS Sr., a medical doctor, about the turn of the 20th century in Massachusetts. They had two children, only one of whom reached adulthood. Under mysterious circumstances, Wyman Dean JACOBS Sr. left Hattie and moved to New York. My aunt said, ". . . Toot never went to New York because she hated any place other than Massachusetts." She went on further to say, "Toot was born in Massachusetts and died in Massachusetts . . . didn't even like to leave there for long periods of time." This did not strike a chord with me, and I told my aunt that Toot was born in Connecticut and died in New York. My aunt then said, "Oh, maybe I'm confusing Toot with someone else . . ." After I told her what her sister had said, my mother asked me, "Have you checked in the genealogy box?" I just looked at her, thinking she had gone crazy. She brought me a cardboard box in which she had kept things from her childhood and things her father had given her, such as handwritten family group sheets. One, of JACOBS ancestry, gave different birth and death dates for Hattie Emma GREER. Rechecking my disk, I found that my grandfather must have dittoed the dates for both Wyman Dean JACOBS and Hattie Emma GREER! I couldn't believe I had not seen it earlier, but they had exactly the same birth and death dates on the disk from my grandfather. So, I went back to Ancestry and looked up the Hattie Emma GREER I had found earlier. This one matched the handwritten sheet from my mother's genealogy box! I about did a back flip because in this file there also was a huge database of MORSE, extending some lines back six or seven generations. Because Hattie Emma GREER's mother was MORSE, she was included in the enormous database. I am glad that Toot was looking down that day to make sure I found her name at Ancestry. If I hadn't begun interviewing my two remaining JACOBS relatives, if I hadn't looked up the name on Ancestry, and if my forgetful mother hadn't mentioned her genealogy box, I would be stuck with a whole missing branch of my tree and incorrect information to go on. Another day, my mother also asked, "Did you ever check the family Bible?" It turns out, my aunt owned a 120-year-old family Bible, which would have solved the whole situation. * * * * * NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB NEW SEARCHABLE DATABASES AT ROOTSWEB. Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * ROOTSWEB AT GENTECH. Actually, Miracode is just a slightly modified version of the Soundex. The Soundex, a special index based on the sound of names rather than spellings, consists of a letter (always the first letter of the surname) and three numbers. Numbers one through six represent certain consonants. For example, Vanderpool is coded in Soundex as V536 and Gormley as G654. A quick way to find the Soundex code for your surname is to use RootsWeb's "Surname to Soundex Code" at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/Genea/soundex.sh Miracode uses the same phonetic code and abbreviations as the Soundex (for additional information, see RootsWeb Guide on Census Records at http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson9.htm) but the Miracode cards list the visitation numbers assigned by the enumerators, while the Soundex cards show the page and line numbers on the appropriate census schedules. The 1910 U.S. census has either a Miracode or Soundex for only 21 states. These indices are invaluable finding aids for these population schedules, and if you are lucky you will find your ancestors residing in one or more of these 21 states. Otherwise, you are in for a more tedious search to find those elusive progenitors. An in-depth chapter entitled "Research in Census Records," by Loretto Dennis Szucs, can be found in THE SOURCE -- a must-have book for American researchers. It is available in libraries nationwide and also for sale by Ancestry, the publisher, at http://shops.ancestry.com/ * * * GEEK SPEAK: The Purpose of public_html Directories on RootsWeb's Servers by Dale (Doc) Schneider maddoc@rootsweb.com System Administrator and All-round Guru When you want to publish your Web pages (make them available to be seen on the Internet), you need to place them in a particular directory of your account. For all the Web servers at RootsWeb (except for the FreePages server, which I will explain next time), this directory is named "public_html". "Why?" you ask. The Web server has been configured to look for all your files (pages, images, music, etc.) in the public_html directory or subdirectories within it. A Web server only knows where users' Web pages are by the [~] (tilde or twiddle), which to a Web server means that this is a user's account and it should look for the pages in that user's public_html directory. Here is an example. Let us say that I have an account called "smith" on RootsWeb's WWW server. In this account, my opening page is named "index.html". The URL for this page would be http://www.rootsweb.com/~smith/index.html . When the Web server gets a request for this URL it will see that (a) it is on RootsWeb's WWW server; (b) it is a user account called "smith"; and (c) it is a page called "index.html". Now, knowing from the tilde [~] that this file is in a user account, the Web server will look for the file in the "smith/public_html" directory or folder. So now you see that it is not only a good thing, but also it is essential for your Web pages to be in the right place to be seen. * * * POST-EM PASSWORDS for WorldConnect, User-Contributed Databases, Social Security Death Index (SSDI), and Vital Records Databases Q. I attempted to add a Post-em Note to an entry and was asked for a password. I don't have a password. Where do I get the required password? A. When adding a Post-em Note to an entry found in a RootsWeb database (the WorldConnect family tree program, user-contributed databases, SSDI, or Vital Records databases) the password that is required is one you choose yourself. Create a password (one that you can easily remember) and add your Post-em Note. The purpose of the password is to ensure that you, and only you, can later edit or delete your note. An exception is that a WorldConnect family tree submitter may delete (but not edit) any Post-em Notes added to his account. If he chooses to do so, he uses his own database password -- not yours. For more information about Post-em Notes see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/postem1.html * * * ASK-A-GENEALOGIST AT ROOTSWEB. Hunt doroab@webtv.net Your most wonderful volunteer has to be Barbara Lee Grigsby, who "adopted" my grandmom 10 years ago and who I luckily contacted to photograph the graves of my kin and see whether there was a date of death on grandmother's headstone. Imagine how shocked we both were to realize that my Fannie (HUNT) HIGGINBOTHAM was the woman in Parkwood Nursing Home who your volunteer had taken to church and picnics back in 1990; then to call and learn that Fannie was still alive, still there, and needing us. Barb rushed right over with a digital camera and e-mailed me a picture. She just sent me more pictures after visiting my grandmom "because [she] wanted to," and allowed me to mail things for her to deliver on the visit so grandmom's room area would be a bit more homey. And your fantastic volunteer added some goodies to what I sent. Now if someone wants Fannie's picture, she has the dress, jewelry, and lipstick I sent to "pretty up" with and her table isn't bare beside her bed anymore.
