Read all about it at http://www.myfamilyinc.com/pressroom/thirdage.htm * * * WORLDCONNECT TIP: ID Numbers Q. When I find an entry through a search on WorldConnect, the entries always have an ID number. What is the significance of the ID number and where does it come from? A. Individual entries in a family tree file you find at WorldConnect have ID numbers that are assigned by the genealogy program that created the file. The purpose of the ID number is to identify a specific individual within a file. No two ID numbers in a specific family tree are the same, although the same ID numbers will appear in other files. Because the ID number of an individual within a file is unique it can be used to help you locate the record of an individual in that file, but it cannot be used to locate a file itself. To locate a file you need to know the user code for the account. If you know the user code and the ID number for the individual you wish to find, use this formula to locate the page on which you will find that individual. [Note that this is two-line URL.] http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? op=GET&db=usercode&id=xxxx Replace the word "usercode" with the actual user code for the account and replace xxxx with the ID number for the individual to arrive at the URL (address) where this entry may be found. Caution is advised in copying ID numbers because they often begin with the capital letter "I" which easily can be misinterpreted as the number "1." You will find the ID number for an entry in a WorldConnect file on the individual record page, which is displayed when you click on a name listed in the index of a file. See: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcresults5.html When you add a Post-em Note to an individual's record in a file, the Post-em attaches to the entry by means of the ID number for that individual. I have been working on the following for a good solid year, day and night. I have, at times, ignored all responsibilities in order to search for these ancestors of mine. With the help of three very generous and kind people from [the PENNSYLVANIA-L@rootsweb.com] list . . ., I was able to find a deed that proves my Hugh MAGUIRE and Patience (my 5-great- grandparents) of Warren, Pennsylvania, were actually in Chester County, Pennsylvania. I could never be sure because there was never any mention of Patience. Many people have assumed they were the same and many people said, "Oh no, they can't possibly be the same." Pat got me thinking, Brenda pointed the way, and Wendy went and got [the deed]. I reviewed the deed, [which mentions] my Hugh MAGUIRE and wife Patience at least seven times selling 68 acres of land to Andrew and Susanna MAGUIRE in 1790. But there is a cherry on top of the whipped cream. This deed names all the children who are listed in the Will of Thomas MAGUIRE, my 6-great-grandfather. I can now prove lineage from my daughter back to Hugh MAGUIRE, a Revolutionary War soldier. I wanted to give my mother, now age 70, the gift of becoming a member of DAR, something she has talked about all her life. Now, I am able to do that. What a fine Christmas present that will be. Please send letters and all submissions as plain text e-mail messages (no attachments or html) to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com I would just like to say thanks to RootsWeb for making it possible for me to find a vital part of my family line. I recently used your Metasearch and found a message asking for information about the surname UDLE. I contacted the man in question who referred me to his father, Charlie UDLE, who turned out to be my unknown third cousin. I was requesting information about Fanny Maud UDLEe. Charlie filled me in that she was the ninth child of 11 children, I have now added more than 350 individuals to my family tree as a result, and Charlie and I have become e-mail friends. Again, many thanks to RootsWeb and congratulations on such a useful and vital genealogy site. Eileen Avern Goodall eperriss@thefreeinternet.co.uk Volunteers from the Muskingum County (Ohio) Genealogy Society were indexing the birth records from their county and came upon the following names. One of their members passed them on to me. Coffey Cup BRAGLIN; Rosebud FLOWERS; Quentin Hyacinth MARTIN; Corilla Cutie JENKINS. I thought they were rather charming and show originality in naming. Linda Franks Beebe d003064c@dc.seflin.org For years I have polished the spoons and forks left me by my mother. Recently, I reread the names engraved on many of them. Eureka! I found spoons for a couple I have just been researching -- got his middle initial and the correct spelling of her first name (Lorette, not Loretta). On the back of a baby picture I found great-grandpa's middle initial. These things have been here a LONG time. I guess I just wasn't interested until now. Take another at the things you have. You might come up with some answers too. Barbara Lake Peters barmusic@erols.com About 20 years ago, when my father-in-law passed away, we were cleaning out the attic. As most of the men in his family were savers of all things, we came across an old trunk filled with photographs. Some were identified, but most were not. We went through them one at a time, and wrote the names on the back of as many as we could identify. About midway through, I picked up an 8x10 picture, taken during the Spanish American War. I could see it was a staged photograph, with officers and their wives. It was a picture of my husband's great-uncle and other officers and their wives. Sitting right in the middle was Teddy Roosevelt, with his wire rimmed glasses, mustache, and that cocky hat. No one in the family had ever paid much attention to the trunk full of photographs that had been in the attic more than 50 years. One photo was Col. Robert Webb Banks, his wife, sons, and his sisters. He was the uncle. I have told all my family to be sure to identify the people in their pictures now, as you will forget who some are. You think you won't, but as time goes by, some will fade from recognition. Photographs help to keep the past alive. Mary Perkins MiiMii4@worldnet.att.net * * * * * HUMOR. Thanks to PRISCILLASHARP@cs.com Birds and Bees The family was sitting at dinner one evening when little Johnny asked, "Mom, dad, where did I dome from?" Mom and dad look at each other and, with a knowing look, told each other it was time. Dad filled in little Johnny on the facts of life -- the old "birds-and-bees talk." Johnny sat wide-eyed and listened. When dad was through, he asked, "Now do you understand where you came from, John?" "Well, I guess so, dad. But Sammy says he's from Philadelphia." * * * * * ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS do not answer or publish queries.
