Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. HALLOWEEN CARDS: http://postcards.rootsweb.com/hall.htm * * * WORLDCONNECT TIP: Keep Your Contact Address Current You have spent years gathering data and verifying information. You have proudly submitted your family tree (as a GEDCOM file) to WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com in the hope that you will be contacted by cousins, who are sure to find you through WorldConnect's Global Search. Somewhere along the line your e-mail address changed. Did you remember to update your WorldConnect account to reflect your new address? One of the most frequent questions we receive from those who search WorldConnect is how to contact the submitter of a file when the e-mail address found in that file is no longer valid. It is frustrating for those who wish to contact you to add their branch to your family tree, compare and share data, or simply make contact with a new-found cousin, when they reach a dead-end because your file points to an obsolete e-mail address. If you find yourself on the receiving end of the invalid e-mail address problem, see http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/badaddress.html A previous WorldConnect Tip explains the "how to" aspects of updating your e-mail address for your account: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/tips/tip-18.html For information on changing your e-mail address for all RootsWeb services, see http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/address.html If you know you are about to change your e-mail address but you do not remember your WorldConnect account password, request it from Password Central http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ BEFORE your old address is discontinued, because your password will be sent only to the address under which your file is registered. If your old address is already invalid and you need your password to update your address, follow the instructions regarding dead e-mail addresses located at Password Central. RootsWeb Review's WorldConnect Tip-of-the-Week Storehouse: http://www.rootsweb.com/~review/tips/index.html RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees, Using Technology to Dig up Roots: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm * * * MULTIPLE COPIES OF MAILING LIST MESSAGES AND RELATED WOES. Do you receive the same number of multiple copies of every message from a particular mailing list? If this happens every time probably there is more than one e-mail address for you on the list. Perhaps you have a new e-mail provider but neglected to unsubscribe your previous address from the list. Perhaps your e-mail provider changed the form of your address, for example, from xyz@email.msn.com to xyz@msn.com, and both work. Now both addresses are subscribed to the list, so you receive two copies of every message instead of one. Whether or not the cause is known, advise the list administrator of such a problem by sending an e-mail message to [LISTNAME]-admin@rootsweb.com. For example, if the problem is with SMITH-L@rootsweb.com, then send the message to SMITH-admin@rootsweb.com. ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS use the same distribution list. Before the weekly distribution of the two e-zines, each of which is sent to the distribution list one time and one time only, a program is run that removes duplicate e-mail addresses from the list. Therefore, if you receive more than one copy of both of the e-zines, it is almost certain that there are multiple e-mail addresses for you on the list. If you receive the same number of duplicate copies every week for at least three weeks in a row, you can be reasonably sure this is the case. If you know that you have more than one e-mail address that might be on the list, then log on at the address(es) at which you would least like to receive the e-zines and send e-mail to rootsweb-review-unsubscribe@rootsweb.com , which will remove the address from which you are writing if it is on the list. You will receive a message from an autoresponder advising either that the removal was accomplished or that the address was not on the list and so was not removed. If you lack access to an address from which you continue to receive mail, then send a note to rootsweb-review-admin@rootsweb.com advising which e-mail address should be removed from the list. Once in a while you might receive an extra copy or two of one e-zine but not the other. This tells you that some anomaly occurred after one of the e-zines left RootsWeb -- a solar storm or some other electrical disturbance, perhaps. RootsWeb has no control over the transmission once it has been sent, so there is no reason to notify RootsWeb. Please use the delete key to dispense with any extra copies. On even rarer occasions, a problem will develop in the e-mail delivery system at the recipient's end, resulting in multiple deliveries -- sometimes dozens or hundreds of copies. It is unlikely that you will experience this, but if you do, keep the copies and forward maybe a half-dozen of them to the system administrator at your ISP so that person can analyze the routing information and perhaps identify and resolve the problem. If that person needs help finding the problem, s/he can send an SOS to abuse@rootsweb.com. * * * SHAKING YOUR FAMILY TREE (SYFT). Thanks for sharing your stories. On behalf of many of my very distant cousins, I want to send a letter of appreciation to RootsWeb for being instrumental in bringing several of us together for a reunion, or I probably should say for a meeting, as we had never met in person. The GEIGER list on RootsWeb is a very active list, and through it a number of us GEIGERs decided to meet over the Labor Day weekend for the Salzburger Society meeting at Ebenezer in Georgia, where our common ancestor lived. There is an active Lutheran church at Ebenezer, which was organized in 1733 and the building, which is still being used for services, was completed in 1769. There is also a museum there, which is run by members of the Salzburger Society. This was once a thriving community, which established the first orphanage in Georgia and even, for a time, had a silk industry. Now, the church, museum, old restored houses, cemetery, and a conference center are there. We felt as though we already knew each other, but we had only conversed through RootsWeb. It was a delightful experience actually to meet face to face and to learn even more about our ancestors. We toured a cemetery on Fort Stewart, where my great-grandfather and his three wives are buried (the first two died soon after childbirth, and the third outlived him). We were only allowed to tour one cemetery as the Army was holding maneuvers that weekend, and we were fortunate to be riding in a four-wheel drive vehicle in order to traverse the deeply rutted, very muddy roads. We later attended the Labor Day festivities at Ebenezer, and we had a great time. One couple came from Florida, one man came from Texas (and he spells his name GIEGER and pronounces it like GIGGER), and we went from Tennessee. We all had a common ancestor, and truly felt a kinship. Thank you, RootsWeb, for making this gathering possible. Nancy Geiger Ford jim_nancy@prodigy.net * * * I have been researching my grandfather's family for the past two years. Thanks to a Swedes list at RootsWeb and another at Smultron, I received information as to where my grandfather came from in Ostergotland county and the date he sailed to America with a ticket to Sanford, Florida. His name was Carl Andrew CARLSON, and my mother and brother always thought he had a brother named Albert. An old professional photograph from about 1890 taken in Sanford, Florida, had an inscription written on the back by my mother, "Carl, Albert and friend." There was a gentleman with a mustache standing behind two younger men who were seated. I understood the inscription to mean that Carl was the one standing and that Albert and friend were seated. My brother disagrees. Carl's daughter, my aunt, maintained that Carl's only brother stayed in Sweden and never came to America. At this time, I did not have a place of birth for Carl Andrew CARLSON. I had a photo I took of his gravestone in Helena, Montana, which had an emblem with which I was not familiar. A friend saw the photo and said, "Why, that is a Masonic emblem." I got on the Internet and eventually found a Grand Lodge office in Montana, and was given the name of the lodge of which my grandfather was a member and the name of its current secretary. I wrote to the secretary and he responded with the name of the parish where my grandfather was born, obtained from his Masonic membership application. Additional research produced the parish of Skonberga. It took a lot of time, but eventually I was able to find out my grandfather's parents' names and the name of his only brother, Axel CARLSON. To me that meant Albert was not my grandfather's brother. Now I am trying to learn whether Axel ever did come to the U.S.A., and who in the heck is Albert? He claimed his ancestors received decorations from both sides, but they really weren't on either side; they just shot whoever came on their property, regardless of what side. Several have congratulated me on the professional appearance of the site. While I am proud of the presentation, I have reluctantly had to explain to them how little I had to do with it. RootsWeb has made it easy for us to share this information with everyone. It is still a work in progress, so I have had to update it twice. The program makes it pretty easy to do. . . (Steve) Eyrse sairs@earthlink.net * * * About three weeks ago my sister forwarded to me an article about how to sign up to the HOLDER-L@rootsweb.com mailing list, and I did. A few days later I began receiving e-mail and I'd read them and say, "I don't recognize those names," and go on to the next one. One day I thought, "Oh well, I'll type in some of my ancestors and see what happens." The next day I received an e-mail from a double second cousin I knew nothing about. Her grandfather HOLDER and my grandfather HOLDER were brothers, and they married sisters. The Lord really does bless you when you least expect it. If anyone is interested, please send me questions and I will try my level best to find information at hand. I am lucky enough to work at the local university so I have free access to the libraries and have managed to collect a fair amount of research myself. I would also appreciate it if anyone who has information to share could send it through to my e-mail and I will be happy to pass it on and also include it on my Web page. Once I have settled down with the club, I will be sending out a newsletter every two weeks or so and would love to include snippets of information that we receive. Judging by the amount of queries I have had, it seems that this is exactly what we needed in this sunny country of ours. There are so many people who just need a slight nudge in the right direction and if I can be of any help, just say the word. Marlene Hoar rhoar@global.co.za * * * * * HUMOR. Understand and Explain At one point during a game, the coach said to one young player, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative. "Do you understand that what matters is whether we win together as a team?" The little boy nodded yes. "So," the coach continued, "when a strike is called, or you are out at first, you don't argue or curse or attack the umpire. Do you understand all that?" Again the little boy nodded. "Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain it to your mother." * * * * * PERMISSION TO REPRINT articles from ROOTSWEB REVIEW is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, PROVIDED: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Written by [author's name, e-mail address, and URL, if given].
