Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * WORLDCONNECT TIP: Broadening your Horizons Have you searched WorldConnect recently? If you have, probably you have noticed that the search results page now includes a search box for searching the Ancestry World Tree. If you have searched the Ancestry World Tree lately you may have noticed that a similar search box for WorldConnect appears on the search results page there as well. You never hear genealogical researchers complaining about having too much information or too many visitors to their sites. Both search boxes bring new researchers to a resource they previously may not have visited. The additional visitors searching WorldConnect because of the search box on Ancestry World Tree have the potential of bringing new information and new cousins to every WorldConnect GEDCOM submitter and vice-versa. NEW WAY by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com Back in BC (Before Computers) I spent a great deal of time and effort the old-fashioned way of tracking down my ancestors who participated in the Civil War. I went to libraries and archives; I ordered microfilmed indexes and waited weeks for them to arrive; I wrote to state and national archives and ordered several files. I drove to the National Archives regional branch and spent days reading microfilm. One ancestor was particularly difficult as there were more than a dozen men of the same name, and I had no clue to the Tennessee county in which he might have resided at the time (this was prior to the availability of an 1860 index for that state). I did not know the unit in which he served and to complicate matters, family lore claimed he fought on both the Union and Confederate sides. The National Archives has about 20 listings for William Kimbro/ Kembro/Kimbrow/Kimbrough and many of them served from Tennessee. Several men of this name are listed in the Union Civil War pension files. I diligently ordered file after file of service records (paying about $5 per file in those days) but continued to strike out. I decided to order all of the pension files and eventually I found my ancestor, who enlisted in an Ohio regiment when the Union Army advanced through his Tennessee home county. But, it took me a couple of years and more than $75 to obtain this information. Today, I used my subscription service at Ancestry.com and searched the Civil War Research Database http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/military/cwrd/main.htm and the Civil War Pension Index http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/military/main.htm In a couple of minutes I had the listing of 19 William Kimbros on the Civil War Muster Rolls and those of this name in the pension files. Since I knew William's wife's name was Hannah and that they were from Tennessee, it was easy to find the pension record and take a close look at the actual image of this card file. It provides the date of pension filings, the class of pensions (invalid, widow and minor) and the application and certificate numbers so I can order the correct files from the National Archives. No more pension files roulette. For an annual subscription of $59.95 (about $5 per month) you can search all 2,500 databases at Ancestry, which contain more than 600 million names. The Civil War Research Database alone can be a gold mine and save you money in the long haul, plus you can do your searching any time from the comfort of home. Thanks for sharing your stories. Shortly after the California Birth Index came online at RootsWeb my mother mentioned to my uncle about the success I was having tracing our family roots on the Internet. He came to me with a story about himself and a first wife, who none of us had heard of before. The information was sketchy at best. They had a baby girl whom he gave up to be adopted by her second husband. He had planned on being a career Navy man, but he decided this would not be good for his daughter. With the little information he had and numerous trips to see him to double check the information, we found his daughter's name on the RootsWeb California Birth Index. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi This gave us her mom's maiden name and her maiden name. Next it was a quick trip to RootWeb's California Death Index http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death//search.cgi and unfortunately a positive hit on her mother. Luckily for me it was a quick trip to the Los Angeles County Recorder's office, and now I know her dad's full name. A check on microfiche and I locate a marriage. She is between where I live and where my uncle lives. I drive down to him with all the information I was able to get. It takes him a couple of weeks to decide what to write to her, but he does and she writes back. They have a date to meet at the end of October. Thank you very much RootsWeb and all the contributors. Please send letters and all submissions as plain text e-mail messages (no attachments or html) to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com I would like to thank you for your wonderful Web site. It has helped me in my search for my lost family that I never knew or met. I posted the names of my family that I knew of on the message boards and also searched for them. Then about five days ago [1 October 2000] I came across a message about the family I was looking for from Alabama and I contacted that person. She turned out to be my lost cousin (now living in Texas). She e-mailed me back and we went from there. Since then we have been in contact two or three times a day and have also talked on the phone. Now we are planning to get together soon. Once again. THANK YOU for your fantastic Web site. It is a great way to connect lost families. J. W. Talbert Viper91555@aol.com * * * [Letter sent to clare@rootsweb.com on 9 October 2000 re: http://searches.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi ] Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sure you know that you have many satisfied visitors. I simply want to say "Thank you" for providing much useful information. Today I confirmed information on three family members for whom I have been searching for 12 years plus I found the maiden name of their mother. This is a RED LETTER day for me! Last week, my wife and I visited the Family History Library in Salt Lake City on a genealogical search and coupled with the information I found today, I am piecing together a segment of my family history. Thank you so much! Folks, I want to thank you again for all that you do to positively impact the efforts of those like me who are searching for information on our ancestors. Thanks again.
