Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX (SSDI) UPDATE. The August 2000 SSDI update is in place. 197,270 new records were added and the the new total is 64,388,048. See http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ For more information about SSDI and Railroad Retirement Board records, see http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm * * * WORLDCONNECT TIP: Locating your Own Family Tree Once you have uploaded your family tree to WorldConnect, you can locate it instantly by clicking on the link provided on the confirmation screen you receive when your database is successfully uploaded. Make note of the URL of your family tree database at WorldConnect (bookmark it) for future reference. The URL for your database will be: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=xxxx or the new shortened version http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~xxxx In either case, substitute your user code for xxxx in these examples. Do not add a closing slash to these URLs. An alternate means of accessing your own database is from the main WorldConnect page: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ Type your user code in the "jump to a specific database" box. Global Search is updated nightly while the database itself is updated instantly. Therefore, you will not find your own database in a search until the day after you have uploaded it. Search results will include your own database unless you select the option to "skip database" by typing your user code into the appropriate box on the search page. Thanks for sharing your stories. FINDING FAMILY by Lloyd R. Gambill-Collins lrcollins1@juno.com Thanks to RootsWeb I am in contact with a part of my mother's family that I have never laid eyes on. My maternal grandfather, Henry Cooper GAMBILL, died before I was born, so contact was lost with his Tennessee family, before I can remember. Over the years feeble efforts were made to reestablish contact, but it was never successful. Now I was over 80 years and never got to know any of the GAMBILLs, so I purchased a computer and chased them via the Internet, determined to get a connection, somehow. I picked up a Joe GAMBILL's name off a RootsWeb letter, and I was off to the races. He knew my family line and got me going down the right track. Little by little I came into the family history circle, and ended up e-mailing a GAMBILL in Nashville, who responded in kind with a thrilling salutation, "Dear Second Cousin" Pay dirt at last! This second cousin supplied me with all the family history, including a nearly 300 pp. book, "The Legend of the Gambill Family," with all the information that I so long pursued. How fortunate that my faithful searching of the RootsWeb weekly reports did provide the leads that directed me to the resources that I had long yearned for. My thanks to RootsWeb for the great help. * * * THE BEST THING I EVER DID by Douglas Grant douglas@falkirk1.demon.co.uk Earlier this year, I was given a copy of a letter sent to my late grandmother, from a distant relative in California. He wanted to know if we were related. I had often thought of researching my family tree (as had my father) but was always under the impression that I would have to pay a researcher to do this for me. Having recently bought a PC, and given that the distant cousin in California had an e-mail address, I thought I would get in touch. From that day on, I was hooked. Thanks to RootsWeb, I was able to get in touch with another distant cousin from Winnipeg, who then put me in touch with a cousin from Scotland. Thanks to my new-found relations, I have gone from having a basic knowledge of my grandparents and great- grandparents to having more than 4,000 individuals in my family tree. I have distant relations from far and wide, as well as now realising that I was related to friends I have known for years from my home town. I also receive regular e-mails from all over the world, based on information I uploaded to RootsWeb. Recently, I was fortunate to meet the relatives from Canada. I must admit I was wary at first about releasing this information (for privacy reasons) but now realise it was the best thing I ever did. Thank you! * * * * * MAILING LISTS. Please send as plain text e-mail messages (no attachments or html) to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com * * * I have to thank you for including my story about Thomas Russell in [RWR 3:31, 2 August 2000]. I have received many wonderful letters and offers for additional help. Barbara Hill, who works in a library actually located the phone number of Pearl Ghormley's son in Oklahoma. He gave me another telephone number, which eventually lead to many phone calls to new-found cousins. The letters mentioned in the book still exist. They are safely stored in a fireproof safe at the home of my new cousin. I am actually the first person to locate the extended family. They could not believe that I found their grandma's book in a historical society library. A trip to Texas is planned for the future to view the originals. In the meantime, I am waiting for color copies. My cousin Jim Herriman who has given me so much information, and filled a void in my family history, sent me flowers for going above and beyond. The beautiful day lily bouquet is in full bloom, giving me a constant reminder of how important it is to share our discoveries. It has been a lot more fun having all these new cousins share in new discoveries. I neglected to mention that I do have the Russell family tree on WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ I receive numerous contacts from potential cousins. It needs drastic updating now! http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=herrmain I also have the SPICE, TAYLOR, FOREMAN and HERRIMAN family stories and pictures on the Oconto County, Wisconsin Web page. Rita Neustifter has done an outstanding job with the county page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/fampg.htm Thanks very much for being here. Peg Oberbeck poberbeck@asapnet.net * * * * * HUMOR. Thanks to Kevin L. Hansen, P.E. The old man was setting on his porch, when a young man walked up with a pad and pencil in his hand. "What are you selling, young man?" he asked. "I'm not selling anything, sir," the young man replied. "I'm the census taker." "A what?" the man asked. "A census taker. We are trying to find out how many people are in the United States." "Well," the man answered, "You're wasting your time with me, I have no idea." * * * * * PERMISSION TO REPRINT articles from ROOTSWEB REVIEW is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, PROVIDED: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Written by [author's name, e-mail address, and URL, if given].
