Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Q. In a recent ROOTSWEB REVIEW, two items raised a question. One described how to update our GEDCOM at WorldConnect and the other mentioned Post-em Notes that can be attached to WorldConnect files. What happens if there are Post-em Notes attached to a WorldConnect GEDCOM when it is updated? Are the Post-ems lost? A. When you update your GEDCOM on WorldConnect, in most cases Post-em Notes attached to your file are not disturbed. Post-ems are maintained in a separate database from your file. They attach to an individual's record in your file by means of that individual's ID number. Most genealogy programs do not renumber the individuals in a file when the database is amended, and provided this is true of your program, your Post-em Notes will still be attached to the correct individual in your file once your new file is uploaded. If you remove the record of an individual to whose ID number a Post-em Note was attached, the Post-em will continue to exist, but it will not be attached to anything. SMALL WORLD by Sarah (Murphy) Jarvis rsjarvis@webtv.net Recently my husband's mother came to me with a picture that was in a Maine history magazine. She knew my maiden name was MURPHY, so she asked if these people were any relation to me. One of the people in this photo of a husband and wife and their 17 children was my grandfather. I had no idea about any of my ancestors on my father's side. I moved to Georgia with my husband because he's in the Army and hadn't given it much attention until a week ago. I got a tip about the Maine vital records from someone from RootsWeb and I asked her a few other questions to get started, because I had no idea even where to begin. I searched for the marriages and deaths of my grandfather's siblings in the Maine vital records and found that 11 of them were still alive. On a hunch I went to another site and checked the white pages to see if any of them were listed. I found one listing. I called and talked my great-aunt for about an hour. She had been following all my years in high school and knew where I lived. She knew I had been adopted by my maternal grandparents. She knew I had gotten married. She lives not even a mile from my house. She told me she always wanted to stop in when she drove by my house and saw me outside, but didn't dare to. I am going home for a few months while my husband is in Bosnia. She told me to stop by and she'll take me to visit my other aunts and uncles. I can hardly wait to hear about the other parts of the family I have never known. Sarah (Murphy) Jarvis A HAPPY ENDING by Phyllis Du'Gas phyllis-dugas@webtv.net I never knew my maternal grandparents. My mother never talked much about her huge family (seven girls and three boys) in Georgia. My sister, brother, and I are all in our 40s and we knew there was family out there. RootsWeb helped me to find them. My search started by posting queries. I then found a "leg work" researcher who coincidentally was born in the small town of Moultrie, Georgia, where I was looking for a 1970 obituary. On 7 August 2000, I found not only my grandmother's 1970 obit, but also surviving family members and more than 30 living cousins. My mother has been reunited with her siblings and I have been talking to my cousins each day. We have shared photos and are planning a reunion for November of this year. Thank you so much, RootsWeb. My small family of three has overnight increased to more than 40 people, all living relatives. I can't express how valuable this site is and I also have met some wonderful people online during my two-month search. It is a fairytale ending. My advice is to use the volunteers -- they are wonderful. Our thanks to Gwen Lott in Georgia. * * * * * MAILING LISTS. Please send as plain text e-mail messages (no attachments or html) to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com I never thought I would be one to write this kind of letter, but I am so excited today [28 August 2000]. I have been searching and searching for my husband's great-grandmother, George Ann JUMP (also known as Georgina, Georgeana, and Georgia), for the past five years. It seems that she had just disappeared off the face of the earth. All I knew is that she apparently married someone by the surname of SMITH and that she was living in Jonesville, Kentucky in 1928. I've not been able to find any trace of her since. One day, I decided to go through RootsWeb's Kentucky Death Index http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ky/death/search.cgi systematically, year by year, starting in 1928 looking for any SMITH who died in Grant County, Kentucky. Then I would do the math to figure out whether the age at death could correspond with the birth year (from census records). I had already searched for any Georgeana, Georgina, Georgia (all surnames) who had died in Kentucky. There was one listing for a Georgia SMITH that could have been her, but when the certificate came, it proved to be for another person. This time I looked at every single SMITH. I found a listing for a George SMITH, who died in 1941 with an age that could be about right. Considering that this woman's real name was George Ann, I wondered if just maybe this could be her -- and that it only appeared to be a man's name. I ordered the certificate, thinking that at the very worst it would be only a $6 loss. Well, today I came home from work and found the certificate in my mailbox, and it's her! Thank you, RootsWeb, for this valuable index. I can hardly wait to see the Kentucky Birth Index online. Jeannine Powell, Duncan, B.C. Canada ogw@home.com * * * My great-grandmother Jane BROKENSHIRE married in Cornwall in the 1850s and then immigrated to Australia. Family hearsay suggested that some relatives had visited Australia from England between the wars, and that parcels had been sent to England during World War II, but with only a few scattered names, any research would have been long and fruitless. However, just recently I have been contacted by a family living in England who saw my BROKENSHIRE family research on WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ They descend from Jane's brother, Joseph BROKENSHIRE, who I now know immigrated to Canada in 1855. So, 150 years later, a family separated by vast distances is now reunited through the Internet. I doubt that we would have connected at all without WorldConnect. Thank you, RootsWeb. Ken McInnes kmcinnes@alphalink.com.au * * * Thank you for helping me find my first cousin and her family. I posted a message on 12 April 2000 on the general Argentina query forum. It read as follows: "Did you escape from Warsaw, Poland to Buenos Aires, Argentina?" I got a message on 11 August 2000 from my cousin's daughter. It was like a dream come true. I could never have found her if not for the Web site in English. Thank you from myself and my family. Elaine EBronz@aol.com * * * WOW! Exciting. Phenomenal. I just want to thank you for the California indexes (birth and death) AND the tremendous capability you have added to search them. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi My search for my Famine-era Irish Catholic immigrants has been a frustrating one. Too common surnames (Hughes, Kelly, etc.) and given names that repeat without any creativity -- Mary, Patrick, James, etc., have made it difficult to follow descendancies. Having hit one dead end after another, I decided to try to go after the oldest daughter of my immigrant ancestors. The trouble is she was a Hughes who became a Kelly -- not very helpful -- and they were in Missouri. On a lark I put into your California online indexes only the surnames of the father and mother to see if any of them might have migrated to California and SHAZAAM! Two married daughters showed up. I now know their married names, county of death, and date. One hour later I'm penning letters to get the death certificates for further details and already angling to find obituaries that might lead to living descendants. While I haven't solved anything yet, RootsWeb has launched me forward to leads that I would not ever have had otherwise. How wonderful to have the power to search for kin just by using parents' surnames -- a real treasure-finder "divining rod." Thank you. Michael Brown-Cooksey BikenMike@aol.com * * * I am another person who would like to thank you for putting the California birth and death records on RootsWeb. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi I have been looking for my half brother for about nine years. I had no idea what his name was but I did know he was born in California between 1930 and 1936. I also hoped that he had kept the family name. When I saw the California birth records, I went right to them and found one birth record that fit according to the date and the surname. I took the chance to see if he was still alive by checking the Social Security Death Index http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ and when I didn't find him there I assumed he was still alive. I went to the telephone directory and looked up the name. There was just one listed, so I finally got the nerve to call and, much to my surprise, and his, he was the right one. His mother had been married to my dad before dad married my mom. I did not know this until about nine years ago and I had been looking ever since. He never knew anything about me. I was happy to tell him that he didn't have just one half sister, he has two half sisters and also a half brother. It was so exciting for me finally to be able to talk to him. I think he was a little overwhelmed about the whole thing but I was able to share a lot pictures of our dad with him also a whole lot of genealogy. He never even knew our dad because there was a divorce when he was very young. He only knew his father's name and only had one picture of him. So you see how excited I am about the wonderful site that brought the four of us together. I hope that one day soon we will be able to meet face to face. Thanks again. Sharyn Wyatt * * * Just want to say thank you. Back on 19 July 2000, ROOTSWEB REVIEW 3:29 told us about Ancestry.com being free until the end of July.
