Does your genealogical or historical society have a database or index to some records (in ASCII format) that would be helpful to others? If so, in most instances, RootsWeb would be proud to host these. (Files that are more suitable for WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com include any compiled records in a database that is stored in a genealogy program and so can be converted easily to a GEDCOM. If you think that you have a database (not your family tree, which you can post at WorldConnect) that would be of value to RootsWeb's users and you would like to share, send a message to Robert Tillman rrti@rootsweb.com and tell him about it. Relax. You do not need to filter, exclude or remove information about the living before uploading your GEDCOM to WorldConnect because it has "living" filters built into it that will do this. In fact, allowing WorldConnect to "clean" or "remove the living" is preferable because this way your original GEDCOM is still on file with WorldConnect with ALL your information intact should you ever need to download it as a backup in the event your data on your computer should ever be lost, corrupted, or destroyed. Here's how it works. Two GEDCOMs are maintained for you in your account on WorldConnect server -- your original (which is not displayed but is stored as a backup for you), and another "filtered" version, which is displayed. The latter is based on the selections you make on either the standard or advanced setup page. Thanks for sharing your stories. This is a story of connecting not just through RootsWeb, but through ROOTSWEB REVIEW. The 24 May 2000 issue of ROOTSWEB REVIEW had an announcement in honor of Memorial Day about the new board at http://www.rootsweb.com/WWII/ that features stories of World War II. I had older brothers in that war and have quite a military family, so I clicked on the link to read the stories. To my great interest, the very first note on the WWII board was from a man in Cornwall, England whose father had been a U.S. Army Air Force Captain stationed in Cornwall, but whom he had never met. The son's name was Bob Mann and he included a letter which his father, Robert Grey, had written to Bob's mother from France in March 1945 (when she was expecting Bob), explaining that he had been shipped out to France and had been unable to see her again before he left. Due to circumstances of war and distance, Bob's mother and father lost contact with each other and Bob grew up never having met his father. Through his message on the board at RootsWeb he was asking for any assistance that could be provided. I wrote to him and said, "Sure! I'll help!" Bob and I began exchanging e-mail and telephone calls so that he could fill me in on what he knew about his father. I discovered that for the past 20 years Bob had been searching for any information at all about his "lost" parent, including years of writing to United States veterans' organizations, the Social Security Administration, NARA, and others without much luck. He knew his father's name, rank, and serial number, but not where he lived or anything about his life. He did find out that his father lived in "a place called Sarasota, Florida" (as Bob put it) in the 1950s. Since that is where I live, I began to get a real feeling of serendipity about helping him. Bob had already found out that his father died in February 1991, but we had no idea where he died. I spent a few afternoons in the Sarasota library going through the microfilm of the local papers from around that date in hopes of finding an obituary. No luck. I searched the Internet for anything at all that might help, including genealogical sites and databases and others devoted to WWII veterans and members of the U.S. Army Air Force. Nothing new turned up. In desperation, I sent an e-mail to the Social Security Administration explaining that I was looking for a place of death and why. [The SSDI is searchable at RootsWeb: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ ] I truly didn't expect to hear back from them via e-mail, but then I received a one- sentence reply telling me that they could not be sure, but Robert Grey might have died in a certain small town in Georgia. We would never in a zillion years have guessed that location. Gosh, the Internet can be a wonderful thing. I found a Chamber of Commerce site for that town and sent e-mails to the County Clerk's office and to a member of the Board of Commissioners. I found a link to the local library and wrote via e-mail to ask if they could search for an obituary for February 1991 for Robert Grey. They did, found one and sent it to us, and he was, indeed, the correct man. Bob Mann had finally found his father's family after 55 years. The obituary listed the widow and Bob's half sister as well as an aunt and niece. I also found addresses and phone numbers for some of his father's survivors which I sent to Bob. (Another serendipitous aspect of this was that Mr. Grey had not actually died in the town or even in the county in which we found his obituary, but the local weekly paper had published it because he had lived there several years before.) A few weeks ago, Bob in Cornwall, England called his father's widow in Georgia and talked to her for an hour. She was happy to hear from him -- although understandably surprised -- and not only knew about him, but also still had a baby picture of him that his mother had sent to his father shortly after the war. Plans are now in the works for Bob to visit the U. S. to meet with his "new" family, who knew of his existence, but had long ago lost track of him and his mother in England. As you can guess, Bob is ecstatic. The search of a lifetime has ended on an upbeat and happy note, even though his father is no longer alive. And I'm ecstatic, too. It is wonderfully rewarding to be of help in this way, but it wouldn't have been possible without ROOTSWEB REVIEW. Thanks to all of you at RootsWeb for making this reunion possible. Best wishes to you all. Sue Montgomery-Cook SCook@dlr.com http://www.acun.com/dentons/ * * * I found a wonderful new lead in the RootsWeb database http://userdb.rootsweb.com/rosters/tx of East Texas Civil War Rosters that I have every hope will help me scale the brick wall in my GLEASON family research. For 40 years I have been scratching for any clue to the heritage of my great-grandmother, Sarah Ellen (GLEASON) SALISBURY, who was mum about her family. I interviewed relatives, studied the censuses and her collection of family pictures, and made several research trips to Texas from my home in Tennessee. Over those years I learned that she was born January 1859 in either Iowa or Ohio of Ohio-born parents; that she had brothers John Riley and Lewis C. GLEASON, born in Missouri or Texas, and a half sister, Minnie (nee BELDEN), who was born in October 1864 in Texas. Minnie had lived, married, and left descendants in Lamar County, Texas. One Mary Jane GLEASON had married Jobez D. BELDEN in Grayson County, Texas in September of 1863, 13 months prior to Minnie's birth, and as GLEASONs were rare in Texas at that time, I feel certain they were Minnie's parents. I learned that the four children had been orphaned in Lamar County when in October 1869, the Commissioner's Minutes show that "the Widow WYATT died latterly, leaving four destitute children" bearing the names of the GLEASON and BELDEN children. (Their mother apparently remarried between 1864 and 1869, but I have not found that record. Her picture box contained a picture of a couple whom she identified on the back as Boyd and Vivian WYATT, but I have not been able to learn more about them, either.) I studied Ohio censuses and learned that Cuyahoga County had GLEASONs, one of whom was born in 1800 and was called "Riley GLEASON" in the 1850 census and "Arial GLEASON" in the 1840 census. As one of the great-grandmother's brothers was named Riley, even though the Ohio Riley was obviously not the father, I felt the chances were good that he was a relative. To add fuel to my suspicion, I discovered that Jobez D. BELDEN was also from Cuyohoga County, Ohio, where he had married Orpha FULLER sometime before 1839, and that he and his first family had also lived for a time in Missouri. But I found no clue to the name of the GLEASON children's father, until I recently spied the Northeast Texas Civil War Roster. As I grasp every straw to find a father for my "orphans," I entered "GLEASON" on the Search line and one came up. Rufus GLEASON, born about 1827, who joined the 1st Texas Sharp Shooters in Grayson County, Texas (the county where BELDEN and Mary Jane GLEASON married), was on the roll at Camp Jackson in Lamar County, Texas (where my GLEASON children were living in 1869), and died in General Hospital at Marksville, Louisiana in July 1863 (two months before the BELDEN-GLEASON marriage). I feel that I'm on the trail of something important, especially as further research has shown "Rufus" to have been a name used in the ancestry of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio GLEASONs. Thank you, RootsWeb, for the first glimmer of hope I've had in years. Bettie B. Davis bbdavis@lctn.com * * * * * MAILING LISTS. Please send to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com What a breakthrough the California Death and Birth Indexes are http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi and http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi . Although I have been researching my POINDEXTER surname for some time, this spring I decided to begin work on a name from my husband's family, TAPIA. California is an awfully big state to search randomly, and I got stuck after the first, although successful, obituary and cemetery searches. When I read about the CADI and CABI, in moments I was logged on and feeding in surnames. Bingo! I had not only the TAPIA I was looking for, who died in 1945, but also his three brothers named in an obituary and now confirmed by their mother's maiden name. A sad revelation was that the last of these brothers died just four years ago, and so a living link to the past was lost. However, now armed with dates and places, we can confidently commence the search for living kin, and perhaps renew long-lost family bonds. Great job, RootsWeb! Gloria Atwater t&gatwater@nanosecond.com I recently discovered the Texas birth records online at RootsWeb http://userdb.rootsweb.com/tx/birth/summary/search.cgi (1950- 1995) and http://userdb.rootsweb.com/tx/birth/general/search.cgi (1926-1949). My father-in-law knew he had a sister born during World War II, who died a few days after her birth, but he didn't know her name. We went to the index and searched by parents' names. We found the birth records for his brother, his sister, and himself. Then we noticed something odd about his brother's entry. The date, sex, and parents' names were correct; but instead of Hiram Magee COX, he was listed as Junella Dawn Larue COX. Apparently the midwife who was responsible for turning in the records on the birth got the records a little confused when she wrote them up for submission. He is taking steps to have the record corrected but we all laughed so hard we had tears running down our faces. Who says genealogy can't be fun? [Nobody we know.
