Do you have a database you would like to share with the worldwide genealogy community? What about your genealogical or historical society? Does it have a database or index to some records (in ASCII format) that would be helpful to others? If so, in most instances, RootsWeb would be proud to host these. (Files that are more suitable for WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com include any compiled records in a database that is stored in a genealogy program and so can be converted easily to a GEDCOM. For an explanation of GEDCOM, see "Using Technology to Dig up Roots" at http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm ) If you think that you have a database (not your family tree, which you can post at WorldConnect) that would be of value to RootsWeb's users and you would like to share, send a message to Robert Tillman rrti@rootsweb.com and tell him about it. Please do not send the database with the initial message. ** PAID ADVERTISEMENTS ** USING PHOTOGRAPHY TO DOCUMENT YOUR RESEARCH. However, the hassle of opening your genealogy program, locating the file you wish to copy, and selecting and formatting the report you want to send just doesn't seem worth the effort. If you have a GEDCOM on file with WorldConnect you can accomplish this feat without any of the work. Simply go to your file on WorldConnect and locate the individual upon whom you wish to base the chart or report. Click on the appropriate link in the row of links at the bottom of the page to view the type of chart you wish to copy. Copy the chart, or any portion of it, to the Windows clipboard. Paste the chart into an e-mail, or onto a message board. In many genealogy programs, Register Reports are produced as Rich Text Format (RTF) files. It is not always easy to copy these reports into an e-mail. WorldConnect Register Reports can easily be pasted into an e-mail, or onto a board, because they are in plain text format. Stone lists@sog.org.uk The Society of Genealogists is about to undertake a joint project with the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) to produce correct indexes to the wills in the Consistory Court London. Before we can do any clever work we need to make copies of the wills from microfilms which are being made as we speak. The LMA have very kindly agreed to make equipment and space available for volunteers to work at the record office for a few hours each week. The volunteers will be trained in using the film printers and will be asked to print out the wills. I would like to build up a team who can go into the LMA regularly for a few hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This is one of those rare "sitting down jobs." If you can spare the time please email Else Churchill on library@sog.org.uk MORE VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT BY FreeBMD by Graham Hart graham@the-harts.co.uk FreeBMD http://FreeBMD.rootsweb.com At the end of January, FreeBMD passed the one million mark and in the next four months reached and passed the two million mark. Congratulations and a big thank you to all the transcribers. The scanner is key to being able to keep up and accelerate the rate of transcription. Thanks to those who volunteered their help for using the scanner last time and to Dave Mayall for keeping the scan syndicate running so smoothly. FreeBMD is still short of people to scan for us, so the call remains for people who can get to West London and help us by doing some scanning. If you are able to help out, please contact us at register@FreeBMD.rootsweb.com. This is an important activity which directly impacts the transcription rate. Our need to put the extra teams in place is a direct result of the success of the project. It's fantastic to hear from people who have found their people using the index and we are seeing it more and more. None of it would be possible without the help of all of the volunteers who put their time and money into transcribing and helping to control the project. We appreciate the help and time of all of the volunteers and we are always looking for more. We are continuing to look at all avenues to increase the transcriber base and the access to source for people. We have a number of efforts underway at the moment and are always on the lookout for new ideas about sources and transcribers. Thanks for sharing your stories. Words cannot express my overwhelming joy in finding my great- uncle on my mother's family's side in Russia. My mother was in Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Germany and was the only surviving member of her immediate family, losing mother, father, and brother. She never speaks of that time of her life, which left us with nothing but my German birth record and newspaper article. A kind researcher reading Russian RootsWeb, read my query and enlightened me on the correct spelling of my mother's surname. In my posted queries I had given the German spelling, which was leading nowhere, and this kind gentleman gave me the original spelling which was the Yiddish-Russian spelling and meant "citizen of Moscow." When my father, and American G.I., my mother, and I arrived in America from Germany, THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES on Easter Sunday, 1949, printed an article about my mother's life, which was evasive, saying only that her father was a White Russian artist and her home was somewhere in Europe and Buchenwald. Several years ago, my niece began attending John Herron Art Institute, and mother told her that she had an uncle who was a noted artist and with a group with "Diamonds" in its logo, and even spelled his name for her. My niece had misplaced the information and for two years I searched for Four of Diamonds, etc, only coming up with car lots and pawn shops. Jack of Daimonds led me to Russian art and better yet when I searched Knave of Diamonds a few weeks ago I was on the edge of my seat as I searched for MASHKOV. I could hardly believe my eyes when a picture downloaded Ilya MASHKOV, a Russian avant-garde artist, whose works are in some museums in Russia, and who had exhibitions in Japan, France, and New York, and a street in Moscow, Russia, that was named with our surname. I examined his photo looking for a family resemblance but as hard as I tried could not see one until I looked at his hands. I was seeing my mother's hands and knew this was an ancestor. My sisters, niece, and I were on cloud nine, my niece recognizing Ilya's name and then mother's confirmation, which she grudgingly gave. We also may have found my mother's father, a Russian art architect. We have learned much about Ilya's paintings and know we will learn more about our heritage, and hope this will heal my mother's heart. I had almost given up learning anything about my Russian and Ukrainian ancestry, but thanks to the blessing of RootsWeb, our impossible dream is coming true. Dorothy Lowery Vaughn granney@Knightstown.net * * * I have been searching for several years and using your RootsWeb newsletters to aid me in locating my birth mother. I was on the surname site and put in my (Abbey) name. I went to the message board and posted a message. I got two hits, which truly surprised me. The first was from a young woman who could not reach me at my online mailbox, so she send me a letter through the regular mail. I then happened across another site and just browsed around there. A few days later I received a message from hotmail.com from my birth mother, who is alive and kicking at age 72. She left us as small children (I was I think less than eight years old) for whatever reason, but to me that is okay. It has been more than 20 years since I saw her for the first time back in 1971, and it was 28 years before I got in contact with her for the second time. We are putting family names together and trying to get names filled in for our own genealogy. This has made me very happy. Thank you all for your wonderful time and effort to get the news out to others that genealogy can be an adventure and a victory. Please send to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com I would like to add kudos to those who made possible the online California Birth and Death Indexes. Through them I was able to confirm a suspicion about one of my great-grandmothers that she moved from Canada after being widowed to live (and die) with one of her two sons in California. Now I have her death date as well as those of both her sons, one of whom was my grandfather. Thank you all. Ann Watson soobelle@hotmail.com Sault Ste. Marie, Canada I just wanted to thank you. The first time I used the RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) last month, I found a third cousin in New Jersey, along with many previously unknown ancestors. We are regularly communicating. JeanR92237@aol.com I was excited when the Texas birth and death records came online, because much of our family has been in Texas since the late 1800s. I found many people I only had nicknames for, or the wife's married name but not her maiden name, etc. However, I couldn't find my mother, which I thought was strange. She was born within the stated time frames, her brother was listed, even her aunts, uncles, and cousins were listed. Fortunately my mother is still alive, so I called her to ask if she knew of a reason why she wasn't listed. She did, and this is another roadblock others may run into: the doctor who attended her birth never recorded her birth. Because she had a Social Security card, she never suspected until she tried to get a passport sometime in the 1970s. It was necessary to get the American Civil Liberties Union involved just to go on a business trip with my dad. One wonders how many others doctors have left unrecorded. Marilou Groves mgroves@lakewood.sps.mot.com Thanks so much for posting the California Birth And Death Index. I was able to locate my mother's uncle who had disappeared after 1910 and was never heard from again. Many hours were spent trying to find him without luck. Everyone assumed that some sort of foul play was involved. Then, thanks to RootsWeb, I found that he had lived and retired to Stockton, California. He passed away in 1951 and I am now attempting to locate his grave site. It would be nice to visit the site and pay our last respects to a family member who has been missing for so long. Thanks again. Dale R. Huber emhuber@attglobal.net Just wanted to thank you for the California Birth and Death records along with the Texas records. They have been invaluable and have helped me tremendously. Gerri gerridoyle@kc.rr.com I've been on RootsWeb lists for only a couple of months. I wasn't getting much of any particular use to my genealogy from the lists, but I was enjoying reading others' experiences. But I did get a wonderful surprise -- a real find from another person on one of the lists. I had been looking for something on my great-grandmother's brother, whose widow and daughter I found on the 1900 and 1910 Pennsylvania censuses. I could not determine whether the daughter ever married, and she was not on the 1920 census. I dropped a note onto some RootsWeb lists, and I got an answer from her granddaughter. So, now I have a name -- and a cousin I didn't know I had -- and I'm off and running to look her up on the 1920 census. She also gave me the name of her uncle in Pennsylvania who I can contact. They saw a gentleman on the sidewalk, so the American pulled up to the curb, and his wife rolled down her window and asked, "Excuse me, sir. Where are we?" The man on the street replied, "Saskatoon, Saskatchewan." The wife rolled up her window, turned to her husband, and said, "We really are lost.
