Do you have a database you would like to share with the worldwide genealogy community? What about your genealogical or historical society? Does it have a database or index to some records (in ASCII format) that would be helpful to others? If so, in most instances, RootsWeb would be proud to host these. (See below regarding files you create in your genealogy software program.) RootsWeb's programmers can do magic with databases, plus we offer incredible search engines that will enable others to find and utilize the material you have so carefully compiled. If you think that your database would be of value to RootsWeb's users and you would like to share, send a message to Robert Tillman rrti@rootsweb.com and tell him about your database. Please do not send the database with the initial message. * * * WORLDCONNECT TIP: Searchable Database or WorldConnect? You have a genealogical collection you might like to submit for RootsWeb programmers to transform into a searchable database. Consider whether your file might be better suited for WorldConnect. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ Files that are more suitable for WorldConnect include one-name studies or any compiled records (for example, of immigrants who settled in a given community, cemetery records, church records) in a database that is stored in a genealogy program and so can be converted easily to a GEDCOM and submitted to WorldConnect. WorldConnect has specialized features designed to make your genealogy file customizable and universally searchable. Flexibility in the display of your data, the capability of allowing others to download portions of your GEDCOM, as well as allowing you to download the entire file, are features that often make WorldConnect the better choice. For an explanation of GEDCOM, see "Using Technology to Dig up Roots" at http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm Find WORLDCONNECT TIPS at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/tips/ and FAQs at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/wchelp.html RootsWeb's WORLDCONNECT SUGGESTION BOARD and help are at http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/gedcom/ The WORLDCONNECT database contains more than 33 million names. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ * * * SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX (SSDI) UPDATE. The May 2000 update of the SSDI is in place at RootsWeb and has 63,861,027 entries. http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi * * * ROOTSWEB IN THE NEWS RootsWeb staff member Rhonda R. McClure won first place in the "Books" category of the annual Excellence in Writing competition of the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (formerly Council of Genealogy Columnists) for THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO ONLINE GENEALOGY, published by Alpha Books/Macmillan. Details at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cgc/ In her article "Internet Data Sharing: Exploring the Options," in GENEALOGICAL COMPUTING: A Quarterly Journal, Spring 2000, Vol. 19.4, Birdie Monk Holsclaw, FUGA, says: "The beauty of WORLDCONNECT is that almost everything you consider important in your database can be uploaded and displayed, including full source citations." http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ In the same issue of GENEALOGICAL COMPUTING is an article by RootsWeb's Rhonda R. McClure entitled "Preventative Maintenance: Take Care of Your Tools," about preventive computer maintenance. ROOTSWEB REVIEW in the news: On page 12 under "Everything's Relative: The Lighter Side of Family History in the August 2000 issue of FAMILY TREE MAGAZINE it mentions that "genealogy makes strange bedfellows -- Elvis Presley and Jimmy Carter, for instance." The story cites the information about "The King" and "The President" that is available at RootsWeb. See ROOTSWEB REVIEW, Vol. 3, No. 1, 5 January 2000 (file 20000105.txt at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/ ) and http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/notable/elvis.htm In the same issue, Rick Crume provides a guide to 10 top pedigree databases (listed alphabetically) including RootsWeb's WORLDCONNECT project. Information about FAMILY TREE MAGAZINE (the U.S. publication) is at http://www.familytreemagazine.com/ The Public Broadcasting System Web page, "Ancestors Immigration Records -- Online Immigration Resources Extra," includes mention of and links to the lessons on "Tracing Immigrant Ancestors" and "Naturalization Records" in ROOTSWEB'S GUIDE TO TRACING FAMILY TREES http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/ which was written and compiled by RootsWeb staffers Julia M. With brides and grooms busy making their final preparations, it seems a good time to look at what marriage records have to offer us in our research. TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE. One of the most helpful things about marriage records is that they provide a "two-fer" -- you get information about both the bride and the groom. Depending on the date and locality of the marriage, this may include the names of both sets of parents; the name of the minister or official who performed the marriage; where the bride and groom were living at the time of the marriage; and the names of the witnesses, who are often relatives. You will generally at least find full names of the bride and groom and the date and location of the marriage. FINDING THE BRIDE'S LINE. As mentioned in last month's column, records on female ancestors can often be difficult to find, due to laws and customs which limited their participation in public life. However, marriage records are an excellent way to trace a woman if you already know the name of her husband. The marriage license will normally list the bride under her full maiden name, and if you are lucky enough to come across one of the more comprehensive licenses, it will list her parents. These two pieces of information are a great start in tracing her family. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. One of the best aspects of marriage records is that they tie both the bride and groom to a particular place and time. This can be helpful if you're trying to trace a person's movements between censuses, for instance. An 1850 census may show your ancestor in Iowa, but when you look for him in the same location in 1860, he's no longer there. However, if you find a marriage record that shows he got married in Iowa in 1856 but was living in Nebraska, you would know to redirect your 1860 census search to Nebraska. FINDING FURTHER RECORDS. One final use of marriage records is as a bridge to church records. A marriage license often lists the minister, and sometimes the name of the church, if a marriage was performed there. Assuming your ancestors stayed in one place for a while, you may be able to find church records for other family rites such as baptisms, confirmations, and funerals. Sometimes churches also acted as the recorders of vital records, so in addition to the ritual records, you might also find birth and death records. Using these records can help you make the links to their children and parents. Thanks for sharing your stories. MAKING CONTACT WITH A RELATIVE by George Curry N8tux@aol.com It never pays to ignore the different search engines available at RootsWeb. A case in point: I was surfing the different sites available and came across the name Ross CAROTHERS. I checked a list I had obtained from a relative and sure enough there he was. I sent an e-mail and the rest is, so to speak, history. My contacts were Ellen and Floyd Chios . . . It seems all of my paternal grandmother's relatives are also connected to them. Through our contacts we discovered relatives going back to the early 1700s and even found a Civil War connection. So keep looking, folks, and you'll find the answers to your questions. * * * COUSIN FINDINGS by Shirley Baxter baxters1@prodigy.net I had been working for at least 10 years on any connection with my great-grandmother MOBLEY's family, but it wasn't until I got on the Internet and found RootsWeb that my search paid off. A year or two ago, I put a query on a MOBLEY surname list and my first break came. A great-granddaughter of a brother of my great-grandmother answered my query and my first connection was made. We corresponded via e-mail and swapped photographs of our ancestors and other information. We wanted to find out if there were any descendants of other siblings of my great- grandmother and my contact's great-grandfather. We learned the married names of their sisters and from that searched for any connection. In January 2000, I answered a query on two of those familiar-sounding married names and hit pay dirt. In February, while passing through Georgia, I decided to take a side trip to Newnan where we stayed overnight and contacted one of those descendants. A nice man met my husband and me at our motel and invited us to his home where he had a family Bible. We copied information from the Bible, had dinner, and the next day traveled to Gadsden, Alabama, where we did some research about our common great-great-grandfather, David Meador MOBLEY. A big thank you for the Internet and RootsWeb, which got me started on this venture. And thanks for those queries. They are indeed helpful and many times the only source for finding our lost roots. * * * * * MAILING LISTS. I just heard the great news and have spent the last six hours updating just one line of my family tree and soon will begin on the other. In so many cases, I had a year and nothing else. But now with these great helpers, I have been able to locate more complete information and, in some cases, to learn the fate of some of my family of whom I had lost track. I also want to thank you for adding the Post-ems capability as I found discrepancies that I was able to note for future researchers. Many thanks to your great team of volunteers for all their hard work.
