NEWS AND NOTES AT ROOTSWEB
ROOTSWEB ADDS U.S. STATE RESOURCES. Adding to the existing
County and Surname Resources, RootsWeb now has U.S. State
Resource pages online. You can visit any U.S. state at:
where you replace the "XX" with the two letter postal code,
like "CA" for California, for the state you wish to visit. At
the resource page, you can search many databases, subscribe to
the state mailing list, and take advantage of many other
genealogical resources.

ROOTSWEB'S GUIDE TO TRACING FAMILY TREES ("RootsWeb Guide")
. Lesson Nine is Census
Records (worldwide), Soundex, and Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex
(especially helpful for identifying Eastern European surnames
and localities). Whether you are new to RootsWeb or new to
genealogical research, the RootsWeb Guide is a good place to
begin exploring. Lessons are brief and highly interactive, with
links to resources at RootsWeb and elsewhere on the Internet
being an integral part of each. Even experienced genealogists
and/or Internauts will find useful tidbits.

ROOTSWEB BANNER CONTEST. Feel creative? Design a banner (468x60
pixels) urging contributions to RootsWeb. If it has the highest
click-through rate for the month of September 1999, you will win
a dinner for two (up to $200 value) at the restaurant of your
choice paid for personally by RootsWeb's CEO, Bob Tillman. Send
your banners to: by 31 August 1999.
We will run all banners that are not outright offensive. Hint:
Bob has a quirky sense of humor.

HAVE YOU TRIED GENSEEKER, the new search engine that accesses
almost all sites at RootsWeb and many genealogical sites
elsewhere on the Web? These searches are more than three times
faster than they were before we upgraded the CPU and disk
subsystem. Access GenSeeker at .
The amount of material accessed by GenSeeker is huge and will
grow quickly as this search engine indexes an ever-increasing
number of Web sites. Use GenSeeker often to find new items of
interest. GenSeeker is a good example of your contributions at
work to make free genealogical data accessible on the Web.

SUPPORT ROOTSWEB WITH A CLICK. You can support RootsWeb and free
genealogy online by going to
and clicking on the "Show me commercial banners" option. This
activates certain extra commercial banners on Surname Helper,
GenConnect, and search-engine pages, which generate revenue for
RootsWeb. This in turn enables RootsWeb to obtain the funds for
more free genealogical material and to provide better services
to online genealogists. Thank you for supporting RootsWeb.

CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB. Thanks for sharing your stories.
I wish to thank the creator, staff, and volunteers of RootsWeb.
You were the avenue that brought back to me my natural family,
after a 52-year, 2-month forced separation by adoption. By
searching your query pages for the GULLETT surname, and knowing
only what was stated on my adoption papers, I have found my
older sister and brother. At this time I can't find the words to
express my gratitude and my thanks. May the great spirit that
lives in all of us bless and keep you by his side.

I started in January of this year on the family genealogy. With
a lot of help from RootsWeb members I traced my husband's
mother's genealogy back to Ireland, England, and Germany. On my
husband's father's side it was not very easy, because we knew
nothing about his family. I only had the name of his
grandparents. After a long search and the help of the Southwest
Oklahoma Genealogy Society (Linda Garrison and Owen Fry) I found
the whereabouts of my husband's family, and to our surprise we
found two brothers and two sisters for my husband. His dad was
married once before with us not knowing it. One of the sisters
is still alive. Last Sunday my husband met his sister. Thank
you again for all the help at RootsWeb.

[This message was posted to QUILTING-L@crafts.rootsweb.com, a
part of the new RootsWeb Crafts community.]
I have a wonderful little story I would like to share with all
of you. I was told to check rootsweb.com to find instructions
for the Bug Jar quilt. While I was searching, I ran across some
family heritage information and decided to look my family up,
not ever dreaming I would actually find something. Well, I did.
I have found a cousin who has traced my great-grandmother's
roots all the way back to 1687 and William Penn's colony. What
a wonderful surprise. Now we are going to try tracing my great-
grandfather's roots. You just never know what you are going to
find on the Internet. If I hadn't been looking for the Bug Jar
quilt, I would have never found this information. So, I would
just like to say thank you to all who have made this possible.

HUMOR. Thanks to Jack Pepper for
relaying the following tech support stories making the rounds.
This guy calls in to complain that he gets "access denied"
message every time he logs in. It turned out he was typing his
user name and password in capital letters.
TECHSUPPORT: "O.K., let's try once more, but use lower case."
CUSTOMER: "Oh, I only have capital letters on my keyboard."

CUSTOMER: "My computer crashed!"
TECH SUPPORT: "It crashed?"
CUSTOMER: "Yeah, and it won't let me play my game."
TECH SUPPORT: "All right, hit Control-Alt-Delete to reboot."
CUSTOMER: "No, it didn't crash -- it crashed."
TECH SUPPORT: "Huh?"
CUSTOMER: "I crashed my game. That's what I said before. I
crashed my spaceship and now it doesn't work."
TECH SUPPORT: "Click on 'file', then 'New Game.'"
CUSTOMER: (pause) "Wow! How'd you learn how to do that?"

THE ALLEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S PERIODICAL SOURCE INDEX (PERSI)
AVAILABLE ONLINE EXCLUSIVELY TO ANCESTRY.COM MEMBERS
PERSI is the Allen County Public Library's subject index of
genealogy and local history periodical articles written in
English and also French-Canadian since 1800. The collection
includes literature dating from the 1700s, although the
collection before 1800 is less complete. The index gives
researchers easy access to valuable materials that may have
previously been unknown to them.
Patricia Law Hatcher, CG, has said, "If you haven't checked
PERSI, you haven't done your research -- period!" and Kip
Sperry, CG, AG, FASG, FNGS, agrees, "If there ever was a sesame
that opens the doors to a trove of genealogical treasures . . .
PERSI is it"
This "work-in-progress" grew last year by more than 200,000
citations, bringing the total to more than 1.3 million. The
index catalogs more than 5,000 total titles, listing every
article according to locality, family (surname), and/or research
methodology. The current printed volume contains 30 bound
volumes. Once an appropriate citation is located, users can
follow a link from the citation to information about the
publisher of the periodical. If the publisher no longer exists,
users are encouraged to check their local library or historical
society for availability of the periodical. Users may also
contact the Allen County Public Library, which owns a copy of
each periodical indexed in PERSI, for photocopies of articles.
Details are available at their Web site at:
"Prior to 1997, PERSI was only available in print or on
microfiche and sold for nearly $2,000, making it practically
inaccessible to the average genealogist. Consequently, it wasn't
very well-known and was very underutilized," says Ancestry.com
co-founder Paul B. Allen. "Once published on CD-ROM and on the
Ancestry.com Web site, PERSI became available to nearly every
researcher and sold in record numbers."
For more information on this valuable research tool, George G.
Morgan wrote a very helpful article on the subject for the
June 18 Ancestry Daily News. It is available online at:
Ancestry.com members can search PERSI online at:
Researchers can also purchase PERSI on CD-ROM at:
