Now in order to post to a RootsWeb- hosted mailing list, first you must subscribe to the list (send SUBSCRIBE message to <[listname]-L-request@rootsweb.com>). This policy became necessary because the volume of spam that was being sent through our lists had reached a phenomenal level. Worse, some users had begun to send spam complaints to sites that were completely unrelated to RootsWeb, but could kill our network connection if they received too many complaints. Closing the lists to non-subscribers became a matter of self-preservation. Because spammers seldom subscribe to the lists they spam, by limiting posting privileges to subscribers we should eliminate almost all spam. The rare spam that still leaks through should be reported to: and NO other site. You can be sure that RootsWeb will contact all other appropriate sites. * * * HELPDESK TIPS. Are you unsure what mailing lists are and how they work? The RootsWeb HelpDesk FAQ titled "Mailing Lists" has a section that explains what they are and how to join them: . * * * WHO PAYS FOR ROOTSWEB? A personal thank you from Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson to everyone who made this year possible. This listing of contributors clearly shows who the stars were of RootsWeb this year -- in addition to those who wished to remain anonymous. We are extremely grateful to each and every one of these friends. Their generosity touches all RootsWeb users, because their contributions are the backbone of RootsWeb. Every file you access, every mailing list you subscribe to, every service that RootsWeb provides exists because of their support. * * * DONATIONS TO HELP SUPPORT ROOTSWEB ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. For details about support levels/benefits and payment options, please visit: or send e-mail to: . RootsWeb's address is: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798. (Please include your e-mail address on all correspondence and checks.) * * * * * CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB: Thanks for sharing your stories. As compiler of a vast amount of DENTON and related family information, and "owner" of the Denton list at RootsWeb, I've been blessed often to be able to help others find their family roots, or at least point them in the right direction. I'll have to say that being able to help others in this way is incredibly rewarding. And now, thanks to RootsWeb, I've received the best Christmas gift imaginable. For 40 years, at least, my Montgomery family has been searching for parents for my great-grandfather, Lorenzo Dow MONTGOMERY. He was born in 1826 in Fayette County, Kentucky and married Mary GUYN in 1843 in Woodford County, Kentucky. "Uncle Dow," as he was known, and Mary moved to Scott County, Indiana where they lived out their lives and raised a large family. Since the advent of RootsWeb's mailing lists, I have often sent out random queries about Lorenzo Dow Montgomery and Mary Guyn hoping to find information on their parents. I did know that her father was Gabriel Guyn, but only that her mother's name was Mary. Well, guess what. A query this week to the Woodford County, Kentucky list brought me the following note from Dona Wilson of the Woodford County Kentucky Historical Society. In one e-mail, Dona sent me the names of Lorenzo Dow Montgomery's father and Mary Guyn's mother. Hi Sue: Since I didn't have a Gabriel Guyn in my marriage bond project for Woodford County, I decided to check the Fayette County marriage bond book that my friend, Melvin Hurst recently completed. I found; Gabriel Gwyn married Polly Hoglin - bond date 21 Feb 1823. Is this your Gabriel Gwyn? This is the only Gwyn listed in Melvin's book. Do you have or need the bond and consents for Lorenzo Montgomery and Mary Guynn? They each must have been under the age of 21 at marriage, since they both had consents. Robert Montgomery, father of Lorenzo gave written consent for him to marry and G. Guynn, father of Mary, gave personal consent. I invite you to share your family research with the Woodford County Historical Society for our family files. Thank you, Dona Wilson Words simply cannot express my joy at Dona's note. I immediately sent e-mails to my family and presented them all with two new ancestors as a Christmas present. Thanks Rootsweb! Because of these wonderful lists, Dona sent a simple, short note, but full of such important information for me and my family. Blessings to you all for all that you do. Sue Montgomery-Cook * * * My great-grandmother's sister's great-granddaughter found me through RootsWeb. Totally unexpected. We are looking for other ROSENBOOMs or ROSEBOOMs who came to Ho Ho Kus, New Jersey in 1868 from Doornspijk, Gelderland, Netherlands. My long-lost cousin thinks they moved down South. Any Southern Rosenboom connections? Thanks for this one folks. Gratefully yours, Martha Cronk Simons * * * I have to thank RootsWeb for all the glory that came with my success. I posted a message about my grandfather, Thomas Coleman ROCHESTER. It was there for a year or so, then boom.crash.shhhhh. bang, a phone call from a cousin concerning the Thomas Coleman Rochester I was looking for. Since that phone call, the shadows of the past have slowly faded out of sight. Those first and middle names have unlocked the doors of my past. So, I say good show old chap and my personal thanks to all of you whom I have never met, but who were deeply involved in all of this. E. L. (Rocky) Rochester * * * Just a year ago I signed on to PAFAYETT-L. In less than two days I had received replies from five researchers of families related by marriage to mine. They got me up and running. I started with a family tree drawn by hand in 1922 that contained 33 names. Now I have almost 1,450 names in my database and the tables have been turned. I am able to share information and answer some queries. Without RootsWeb I would have been back at square one. Last year I was a sponsor. This year I am doubling my support in appreciation of your efforts. George Hibben * * * My 88-year old Finnish grandfather, Edward FILPULA, had always told us that the formal name of his mother, called Sanna Lisa, was Susanna Elizabeth AKINANEN, and that she was on born on 29 August 1868, but my mother had seen her tombstone in a cemetery in Hanna, Carbon County, Wyoming, and it said Sanna Lisa. This is part of an e-mail message I received from a distant relative in Finland. "I was today at Ylistaro parish and checked out Susanna Elisabeth Äkkinäinen. Could it be that she was born 29.08.1867 instead of 1868? I found Sanna Lisa Johansdr Äkkinäinen b. 29.08.1867 in Ylistaro. Her parents were Johan Johansson Äkkinäinen b. 15.12.1834 in Ylistaro and Susanna Jakobsdr. b. 20.06.1846. Thomas a.k.a. Tuomas Johansson Äkkinäinen was her older brother, and he married Kreeta Emilia Mikontytär Erkkilä. Kreeta is a distant cousin of my grandfather." I've been looking for my great-grandmother for more than 20 years with no luck, until this person from Finland helped me. Thanks to Ron Pinkerton for passing this along. PERFECT COMMUNICATION THROUGH TECHNOLOGY, SERVICE, AND EDUCATION The European Commission on the European Unification (EU) just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phase-in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish." In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c." Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k." This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have less letters. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f." This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. RootsWeb first offered memberships and sponsorships in August of 1996, after it began hosting the ROOTS-L mailing list. Those early members and sponsors were there for RootsWeb when it had no track record. RootsWeb is grateful for the faith they had that this project would someday evolve into something to be proud of. And RootsWeb is not done yet. It has hardly begun. In the weeks to come, we will be contacting RootsWeb members and sponsors whose memberships have lapsed, or will soon lapse. Folks who know it has been more than a year since they joined RootsWeb are welcome to go ahead and resubscribe at their convenience. * * * * * PERMISSION TO REPRINT articles from ROOTSWEB REVIEW is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, PROVIDED (1) The reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes.
